The simulator niche is alive ;)

Just bought me that game.... Ka-52 assault chopper simulator. It just totally and absolutely rocks. Good graphics, fully clickable cockpit, and the realism. My god... it's more complicated then Falcon 4.0. 600+ pages manual, 8 pages of keymapping.

And here you can buy it:

Yeah, you can dumb down the realism and get a simple shooter... but the feeling of turning 100% real flight, and then just "wasting" 1 hour to learn how to start and keep the machine in hover mode brings you helluva satisfaction. Having one hand on joystick, 2nd on mouse keyboard, and trying to fight some vehicles is really fun, brings ol'good memories of AH64d Longbow :) but this time you fly for Motherland not for US :p

It is good to know, that there are people who bring out games which are not dumbed down ports, also offer excellent gameplay and good graphics. For it it is game of the year, even if it's niche product that will never hit front pages of any game site.

Looks good.
Im thinking its a little steep on requirements for me though. the video visuals looked really nice.

This got my interrest, too many games these days carter to the CS people...I like a game where I need to learn how to play it...keeps the kids away ;)

Uses Starforce for DRM (both retail and download versions). Not touching it, not buying it.

Seriously? This is a game where just starting the helicopter UP takes 15 minutes, EVERY switch in the cockpit is modeled, the labels are all in Cyrillic, and you are complaining about the DRM?!

This is as close to 'the real thing' as you can get! Like, literally! They actually had access to one of these helicopters to model it. You could (literally, in fact) learn to take off and fly the thing in this game, hop into the actual helicopter, and do exactly the same thing.

At it's best, this is no part "game", and 100% simulation. I don't think what DRM method it uses is even part of the question - to get into this, it's a lifestyle choice. You will be flying this, and only this, and nothing else on your system, and probably build a system specifically FOR this title (complete with HOTAS, rudder pedals, and head tracking) if you really want to get everything out of it that it's offering you.

It's 15 minutes only when you know what you are doing... at first it takes much, much more :) And you are absolutely right about joysticks... I'm waiting for the saitek flight system, which I ordered after figured out my standard joystick is useless :)

And I don't care bout DRM method either. Hell, if I had to sign the deal with my blood to get it, I'd just ask "how much of it you want". ALl that game needs for the perfection is multiplayer mode. That would rule. But even a single mode is everything you could want from a flight sim :)

The video doesn't really demonstrate any in-game missions or controls...

Besides no matter how "realistic" a game is, DRM is DRM. When it's a tough decision not to get something because of your moral stance, that's when it counts the most.

Go take that DRM/warez debate somewhere else...those that have a real interest in this game in this thread don't care.

This title, as well as ArrmA and ArmA2 got me to buy the TrackIR 5 a couple days ago. Waiting for it to get here, will be awesome.

However, even after mastering the procedure to take off, i get airborne, fly a bit, alarms and shuddering and I fall like a rock!

Very challenging, imo. Great game.

looking at the graphics this game has to be using the microsoft flight sim X engine.. and is obviously a direct copy of the flight sims that are currently used by the military.. (anyone say recruiting tool? :p) though honestly i hope they are using it as a recruiting tool.. this games awesome and detailed as heck.. I'll have to give it a try.. its about the closest im ever going to get to flying a real helicopter anyways..

It doesn't use the MSFS engine, it is a proprietary engine made by Eagle Dynamics.

It is quite simply the best helicopter simulator I've ever used. The attention to detail and subsequent immersion is pretty stunning. And keep in mind this is just the beginning... an A-10 is in development as well.

after that last ArmA2 vid w/ the trackIR 5 i was almost sold. i don't do flight sims too much, but in nr2003/iRacing/any game like Arma2 the damn thing looks worth it's weight in gold. post up when you get it...

No, it's using a modified version of the LOCMAC engine. I think they will be doing the A-10 next, which is very exciting.

At least the labels in the cockpit will be in English, this time. That should help a lot. :p

Lol, I almost went into impulse buy mode after watching that video on youtube. I definitely will be getting one of these in the next few months, along with a set of rudder pedals.

I really want to try this out. I have a hotas X45, but no rudder pedals. I would love to jump on this and I might if I find a decent set of rudders to add on. BTW their is co-op in this game too.

The helicopter sim looks nice, but doesn't look like you can do anything else other than that. However it is good for people who only want to learn how to fly a russian attack chopper.

Agreed.

Go take that DRM/warez debate somewhere else...those that have a real interest in this game in this thread don't care.

Some people DO care about which flavor of DRM is included in their games. I simply pointed out which flavor that was so others can make an informed purchasing decision. No one is debating the pros/cons of DRM in this thread.

Look....I was ready to buy this sim on Day 1. When was the last hardcore military study sim released? Lock On? So it's been a while and I'm aching for something new. But I refuse to support a product that includes the biggest DRM offender of them all.

Then exit this thread?
Problem solved.

I used to be a flight-simaholic but was forced to quit after my aging CH gear refused to work under XP. I still remember my first Longbow flight after I got a throttle and pedals . . . after controlling rudder and collective with the keyboard, a full HOTAS made it seem like the helo was hooked directly to my brainstem :)

I just watched a demo of TrackIR5. I am super tempted to grab this and Black Shark since they plan to do a whole bunch or more Jets and Helios. Used to be big into Sims back in the day. My favorite was SU-25 way way back. So fun.

So I got the TrackIR 5 and the proclip. One word. Awesome.

After doing a bit of adjusting with the graphics, it's so cool. When you are in a hover scanning for targets, looking into your turns (as stated in vids on YT), having the TrackIR feels so natural. I have zero regrets in my purchase, it's a much needed addition for anyone who wants more immersion in their sim experience.

Not to derail the thread, but I've logged quite a few hours in DCS:BS, IL2 (very very cool too), LOMAC and a bit of ArmA. If you're considering and have the funds, you won't regret it.

Oddly enough, I purchased the game through the DCS site and never had to do any of the activation BS which you're supposed to have to do with Starforce. /shrugs

Great game if you can live with the DRM (which was completely transparent to me).

Yep. It's a game I'd buy, play, and play again, and again, and again...

Except that I ~know~ I'd hit the 5 limit and be totally screwed JUST FOR THAT REASON. :(

I don't know why they even wasted their time with DRM, its not like its hard to get past it...and lets be realistic, this game is not going to sell millions of copies, so they are only hurting the people they need, the hardcore simmers. The hardcore simmers will buy the game just because there are not many modern sims out there, and they have to compare this game to ones released years ago. Their money actually matters, and they know that if *they* are pirating the game, then NOBODY will buy it and they will be stuck playing Janes Longbow for another 10 years.

This is not a console title with lots of advertisements and hype, its success depends on the hardcore simmers money and there are not too many of them, but they are probably the most dedicated group of gamers out there and from the reception of DCS: Black Shark, they did a good job and have people excited about their next games. I would imagine that they are not too worried about the competition either...
