So I've been fairly happy with my Q9550 and haven't seen a need to upgrade to an i7 machine but I've been tinkering and playing around alot more with VMs (learning Ubuntu and working with Windows Server 2008) and I can sometimes feel my Q9550 choking or slowing down. Though not entirely sure or whether to put the blame on the Q9550 but I'm thinking that it's the case.

Do I install more ram 4gb->8gb or go i7+12GB ram?

VM's use a shitton of RAM. Still... host OS + Ubuntu + WinServer should be doable on 4GB I would have thought...

ram is cheap... get that first I would think. I upgraded recently from 4gb to 8gb and its a noticeable difference

More RAM definitely. In addition, disk speed also plays a small part as well.

2 VMs? yah, get more RAM. When you're running more than 4 VMs, jump to i7. :p

I would not get the i7 just yet.I can't tell the difference from when my q6600 was overclocked to 4gigahertz while playing games.Rendering was double, but if you not into that then wait.
