My friends and I get together about once a week online for multiplayer action. We've played a ton of stuff, but have been in a rut lately. We're looking for something new to play, maybe an FPS, or a great RTS. Here is a brief list of stuff we've played in the past:

L4D
GTAIV
Company of Heroes
Battlefield 1942, especially the Desert Combat mod
Counterstrike
Neverwinter Nights
Fifa (over the years, have 2009 now)
Flatout 2
IL-2 with addons

We don't tend to go for MMORPGs, particularly since we don't have much time during the week. Most of us really only get one night a week to spare on games, but on that night, we tend to spend 5 or 6 hours in some cases.

So I guess the question I have is, what do people recommend for awesome multiplayer games? There are 4 of us, and reliably there are 3 who can make it every week. We're currently looking into Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which one of us has and says is a lot of fun.

Any recommendations? Newer games are preferred- anything from the past 2 years o2 so is great, but older stuff is also cool because it would be cheap and if it's a great game that's all we care about.

Thanks!

I recommend Diablo 2 with a texture resolution mod. Very fun for a couple of friends to play co-op and compliment each other. I know it's like a million years old but I still play it and love it.

UT3, and if that doesn't work UT2k4 is really better but not as pretty.

Oh shit. Quake III Arena! Get a server up with bots to fill in. It would probably get old after awhile though with just four humans involved.

Yeah, I've loved me some Q3A in the past. But we have one guy that's just opposed to it. I dunno why, it was just never his thing. I've played Quake Live some in the past couple months, and it sure takes me back. Thanks for the suggestion tho.

Replace him. Majority rules. :p

I miss college. My freshman year we had an inter-dorm Quake III battles. One of my friends turned and old computer into a Quake III server. Some of the guys in my dorm would co-op in C&C Generals and Ghost Recon.

SC:CT, as one of your friends recommended, is a good suggestion. The only problem is that you might run into complications with the Starforce copy protection if you use Vista x64. There are ways around it but I'm not at liberty to discuss such things here. You might want to look into Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow as well. Great multiplayer even with 3 people and some pretty memorable maps in that game that didn't make it into Chaos Theory (i.e. 'Hospital' and 'Vertigo').

Halo: CE, while old as dirt, is still good IMO for some small skirmishes.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is another rusty but trusty good game.

Some newer ones I can think of are BF2, BF2142, and TF2 are all good shooters but you probably won't have that much fun if you have only 3 or 4 people playing (unless you have an sever setup for more online persona). Sorry that I don't have anything more to contribute that is around 2 years old or newer; I haven't been that active in multiplayer gaming for nearly five years.

Awesome. Thanks for the suggestions. And the note on vista x64, as that i what i'm running, and one other guy as well. i'll see if there are other notes on starforce with x64. crap. i didn't mention above that i have BF2 and TF2.. we've played them some, but they just didn't grab us in the same way as Desert Combat. Two of our guys (not me tho) are top notch helo pilots, and as you may know, that's what it's all about in DC. Fucking great game. We didn't try BF2142, but I'd be game. I'll look into Pandora Tomorrow too... should be in the bargain bin.

Can't help but notice you don't have CoD4 listed, so I call into question the validity of your post. ;)

GTA:IV is my current favorite for LAN play, but you already listed it.

If you like racing games, you might give Trackmania a try

Having people that are 18+. And people that don't say "win" "epic" or "fail" to complete sentences.

I've tried TM:Nations. Actually I like it for some quick racing. Never could convince any of the others to give it a try. Regarding COD4, one of the guys has World at War that he's supposed to send to me, and then we'll both have a copy to test. By all accounts, CoD4 is a Game to Own. I don't know if it's cheap yet, but thanks, that should be on the list.

Yeah, we're all adults, thank god. Which in no way implies that we're mature. Just old. We're more likely to say "balls" than "fail".

Thanks for the feedback.

yea trackmania as someone mentioned is good... Army games like CoD would work too.

how does GTA:IV multiplayer work? guns or driving or missions or what?

It works great. I've only played in small games with my friends, and we usually just drive around and do jumps and stuff. Larger games also work, but there is evidence of lag. And the guns are spread around liberally. Multiplayer in the helos is also fun. Especially when the real challenge is seeing how many wanted stars you can get.

Jedi Outcast
Perimeter
Rise of Nations
Serious Sam
Sins of a Solar Empire

We've done rise of nations. We also did serious sam (blast). Don't know about perimeter.. how is multiplayer in sins? that games has gotten a lot of good press, but i don't know much about it. Is Jedi Outcast pretty old? I don't know anything about it... I know one of my buddies really loved KOTOR.

Thanks for the replies. Getting some excellent suggestions! :D

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but Call of Duty 4 and 5.

And also Team Fortress 2.

Serious Sam co-op is fun as hell. UT99 and CoD1/UO are also awesome LAN games. And I see that Jedi Outcast was suggested above, but you might want to give Jedi Academy a shot instead as it has more varied lightsaber combat (it's fucking awesome). It's a fairly old game by now (Quake 3 engine), but it's got great gameplay.

Jedi Academy. Cool. Lightsaber combat = awesome. We played an absolute TON of UT back in the early days. It got so that I would be thinking to myself "headshot" just walking around. :D

Delta Force Black Hawk Down and it's derivatives were fun military games as well... you can find them for cheap too

For an RTS i would also go sup com, good game although i find it tricky to play other rts's like command and conquer once you get used to the zoom out ability, other games feel cramped.

That seems like the most common feeling I have when playing an RTS: I feel like I can't zoom back far enough. CoH is pretty good, with the ability to control units crudely through the overview map, but I'd be interested in trying out supreme commander. I wonder how cheap I can find it for... I think that's going to be a buy.

Thanks for the comments.

SupCom has excellent zoom range. If you have a secondary display, you can use it to show the map. You can zoom in with it, and even when you highlight units or structures on your main display, their sight, radar, and firing ranges are shown on the secondary display. Nice tool.

For co-op play, Serious Sam and its sequels are fun to play. Wave after wave of assault.

Yes, the ranges of weapons and radar is a nie touch.

The game is available through impulse.

Not that it will matter against humans but the creators didn't get the A.I right, hard is far too hard, medium ain't hard enough at least for me.
