Microsoft has announced the release to manufacturing of Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Among other things, SP2 will bring the ability to natively record data to Blu-ray discs and support for Bluetooth 2.1.

Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches. Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology. Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista. Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration. Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones. And since it comes with a single installer for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, SP2 will be easy for IT Pros to manage, deploy, and support.

Wow lots of major changes. Major changes make me nervous.

I'll wait a week and read up on horror stories first in the Operating System forum before deploying them at the office *grin*

Seriously though, I'll try it at home first, and maybe a couple unused computers in the office.

I've been running the public betas and rcs for some time and haven't had a single problem with them.

I installed the RC a while back and didn't notice a single thing different.

Hrrmm, definitely wont be deploying these to my 2008 servers right away. Nice to see a lot of good changes though!

Good to know! I'll be trying the RTM out as soon as someone put out links to them.

folks

word of caution

Microsoft guess laid off there folks that check URL

towards the bottom of the page. For It Pros.

Microsoft put

technetmicrosoft.com. This redirects you to soopa.com which is one of those domain sitting search engines. The correct URL is technet.microsoft.com (note additional period).

SP2 includes updates to the RSS feeds sidebar for improved performance and responsiveness.

I really hope so, my task manager shows 2 instances of sidebar at the moment, 1 is using 1.96GB of memory and the other is using around 50MB.......every 3 or 4 days it will reach this amount and i will restart the sidebar. The RSS feed is just one of the many gadgets which leaks memory everywhere.

I did. Performance was a lot better with SP2 beta than it was with plain-jane Vista or Vista SP1 on the test box we put it on at work.

I would guess that the SP2 team took some plays out of the Windows 7 team's book, but that's just speculation. However, SP2 is the first version of Vista I'd consider using on a regular basis.

That said, I'd say that the RC of Windows 7 will probably stay on my laptop until expiration in March 2010, and I may skip Vista at home altogether.

So is this a code name for the Win7 release? ;)

They need to just bag 'n tag their Vista OS. They won't, so now they are stuck supporting it for several years. Great move...

Yes but is it really sidebar itself? or the crappy programming of the gadget that someone else made?

All of the mem leaks i used to see in sidebar were too to poor gadgets.

im running a beta that wont let me uninstall it or upgrade to the rtm. are there any registry hacks to force install the rtm?

This is with just the RSS feed gadgets which come with Vista, so Microsoft programmed.

waiting for link as well. im running the lastest available beta for SP2...Final would be nice :)

Just a quick question, I need to reinstall Vista soon, would i need to install SP 1 before installing SP2 for vista when its out? Or can i just do Vista > SP2?

Vista needs SP1 installed before SP2.

BUT.... if you can find a Vista installation disc with SP2 already integrated in it, you can bypass SP1 altogether.

Anyway, I have it installed (x64) and haven't noticed anything different. I hate when I get excited for things like this then notice nothing.

Care to put your Big Boy pants on and admit you were wrong wrong wrong? ;)

lol, you guys take this crap way too seriously, i have no problem admitting im ever, ever wrong on this forum... so yea... this is the first time i've ever seen an SP where the previous one was required... d'oh...

anyway, the x64 link that someone posted up above works.... im downloading now...

i have read a few articles about this and it keeps being stated that this SP will fix microsoft's "problem-plagued operating system" - the article i remember specifically was on computer world by some gregg guy

man i hope it comes out soon so people will stfu about vista's insurmountable problems and learn that their fud isn't wanted...but we'll probably have to wait until SP2000 until that happens

SP3 on XP requires SP1 or SP2 first

anyone download the x64 off the link posted above? I tried an MD5 check and it doesnt match up with what various pages around the web say it should be....

edit: the file i downloaded from P3N1X0R's link gives me a file version of

6.0.6002.16670

but from what i'm seeing around the web, I should be getting

6.0.6002.18005

anyone else getting this problem?

I saw the same thing, in addition if you launch the installer the EULA indicates it is "pre release software" Seems this could be an earlier beta.
