i'm curious as to which people here enjoy more. i've played a few rounds of versus that were enjoyable, but honestly i feel like Horde fits the game and physics so much better. i also like that i feel less competetive when playing against AI. so i'll still try to have the most kills and points, but i don't care as much.

My friends and I enjoy horde more than anything. I just wish they'd allow for more randomizing in the waves and such. Still, it can be a totally new experience based on map, as well as even how you choose to play a given map.

for the most part me and my friends spend most of our time in versus unless one of them needs something like an achievement or we're really bored, because for me, horde starts to become really repetitive after a few rounds, which usually makes me want to stop and hop on versus. and i also like the competitiveness :D

gears 2 versus is laggy as hell, until they make it near lag free like Halo it will never be a good multiplayer experience.

I think of it more like a raffle. I get to shoot the wall with my shotgun to see how much of a delay there is, and then I can pretty much tell what my score will be, based on that. If I happen to be host, watch out.

bad netcode ftl.

I still play horde, haven't made it to 50. Vs sucks ass imo.

If anyone wants to go for level 50 let me know, we'll set it up.

i've beaten 50 in a private party, in public i've gone as far as 35. if you haven't gotten it by the time i get a replacement xbox, hit me up, i'm Domicron on XBL

yeah I mean there are many times where I shoot my shotgun at the walls and then the bullet holes register up to 3-4 seconds later. I didn't pay $50 to play a raffle game. Just don't understand how they can let this issue go on for so long even since gears 1. What is it that makes halo 3 lag free and gears 2 crap?

Horde wins.

Gears of War 2 has too many issues when it comes to competitive multiplayer.

  • The matchmaking is still broken - It can still take several minutes just to get into a match.
  • Broken netcode - Half the games I get into are a laggy mess, while the other half are smooth as butter. Yesterday, I got into a game of Wingman that was so laggy my team had three players on it. What gives?
  • Weapon balancing problems - The smoke grenade knockdown needs to be removed. The Scorcher is too powerful, especially on active reload. The Mulcher and Mortar guns have no right to be in the competitive multiplayer; they should only be in Campaign and Horde.

I get into matches in 10 seconds or less, never more.
I have yet to have lag since the last patch.
I haven't experienced any weapon balancing problems.

Odd.

I got the horde achievement and only play if a friend needs the achievement. Versus is where it is at. I really like the new system a lot.

I gave up and sold Gears 2 about a month after it was released. Sad, because I LOVED the first games and had massive expectations for Gears 2. The game itself is decent but there were SO many bugs (lag, glitches, problems finding online games, etc) that it was more frusterating than it was fun.

Were I to choose one I'd say definitely vs. mode though. Don't get me wrong, Horde is fun but you can only play the exact same thing vs. the computer so many times before it becomes a bit stale.

I keep games, bugs or not. Usually they work them out with patches sooner or later. I am still playing KZ2, even though that is as bug ridden as GOW2 was .

Yeah, but I've not been that let down by such a horribly sloppily made game in...probably ever. Granted, I started playing GoW 1 about a month after release so maybe they already had the bugs fixed but with GoW 2 first they try to spoon feed you the buggy crap that they obviously didn't even bother to test, THEN they post a "just made DLC map packzorz" 3 weeks after the game's relese (which had to be finished before the game ever shipped). That's just dirty tactics. I'd rather have had them delay the game a month, heck, even 2 months and get the bugs fixed rather than ship it as screwed up as it was.

Give me a game that runs well from release date and if you want to add DLC either A) make it free if you're adding it 3 weeks in or B) wait a few months at least!!

"Give me a game that runs well from release date"

I have never had a game that runs well from release date, EVER.

Call of Duty 4 ran quite well. Heck, even Halo 3 wasn't all that bad.

Runs well = not riddled with problems, if it's got one or two minor glitches then that's alright, but GoW 2 was broken when they shipped it.

COD4 and Halo 3 were riddled with problems when they were first released. Broken when shipped.

Not nearly to the level of GoW2.

Not being able to joing a MP game = broken.
Having to quit SP because your character is stuck doing the electric slide = broken.
Everyone but the host in the game stuck in a 2+ second lag = broken.

Neither Halo nor CoD had anything even remotely close to that.

I hate halo 3 with a passion. I played it for about 3 weeks right when it was released, and despite my hate for the game, and love for gears, there is zero comparison. Gears MP has had severe severe issues since gears1. Epic can't do netcode on this game for shit. Halo 3 was smooth as butter from launch day for me and everyone I play with regularly.

Again, I'd point out: I love gears to death, halo 3 is one of the worst blights on gaming in the history of mankind.

I'm with you, I've never been a big Halo 3 fan and I too played it for 3 or so weeks before selling it (of course, I've owned it 5 times now) whilst I was a huge Gears fan, but Halo 3 has never given me a hickup. Even if I hate the gameplay a big hats off to Bungie for making a game that is relatively problem-free.

Although people did complain when they patched the game on release day (it was a tiny patch if I recall...). I can handle release day patches, I'd much rather have that than a game that is never correctly fixed.

i'm all for fixes and patches. other than the freshman level programming courses i've never written any code, but i can imagine how difficult it is to create smooth netcode. i think one of the reasons halo and bungie did so well (i mean make money and sell games) is because their code is solid enough that they'll get companies like microsoft to buy them and support them.

personally i enjoyed all the halo games. i don't have the desire to play any of them anymore, because i think games now, especially my personal love, co-op games, are so much better.

Epic has a history of making online games very successfully and have some of the biggest sellers this generation. They could afford to fix the code if they wanted to.

Hrm, odd. None of my friends have had any problems with Halo 3, I know several who like me threw in the towel with GoW2.

Curious where you're pulling these "majority" and "minority" numbers, are there still alot of people posting with Halo 3 problems? I'm not really "in" either community so I can't comment.

I agree with noob Gears is complete shit online, I've had problems with Horde as well. No game that high profile should be in that shape when it was released. And still buggy as of today, not as bad but I still see those leachers or whatever there called walking around upside down in Horde.

I'm going back to playing battleship ftw.

Who didn't have endless issues with Halo 3 bugs, glitches and online connectivity problems.

As for GOW2, the majority of us haven't had issues since their second patch.

lol NOBODY I know has issues with Halo 3, there's virtually no lag and the matchmaking system is wayyy better than Gears 2's copycat attempt.

And when you say you haven't had issues, are you telling me that all of your games are lag free? Where you are able to shoot the shotgun and the bullet holes would appear immediately even though you aren't host? Because that's completely false.

For me, Horde for sure. I never really liked MP Gears. The whole idea of the single player seems lost and instead you're left using weird mechanics to play like an FPS.
As far as online play goes, Halo is pretty much the quintessential online game for the console. It's about as good as they get in terms of latency and netcode.

This sounds more like what I'm used to. Halo 3, while not my favorite game was pretty much error free for me. Matchmaking was always a snap, no glitches/lag in game, it just "feels" polished.
