I got my LianLi PC-A05B ! it's Small!

I guess the front 120mm fan is not enough to suck out the heat. I will be placing a sound dampening kit into the computer this weekend so I'm have to break it down anyways. I'll try removing the Hd cage and see if that helps and flip the PSU

I'm doing small adaptation in my A05. Some polishing, cable management improvement and one window :) Of course 2 x 120mm grill will be placed on top. Some pics from last week:

Now I have to wait a while for Waxing. About 2 weeks. Than All should be finished with Xigmatek fans :D

you have some skills!

good stuff!

The mod I'm thinking of is to cut the bottom of the hard drive cage out. giving the PSU fan room for sucking in air. What that work just as good as taking out the drive cage?

If you have a drive sitting at the bottom of the cage, then (IMO) it's not going to be a huge win over "PSU fan facing bottom of the case" scenario -- you'll pick up some open area around the sides of the HDD, but the gap between the bottom of the HDD and the top of the PSU is smaller than the gap between the bottom of the PSU and the bottom of the case.

If that's the case, I'd investigate making cage removable (there are examples in this thread) and flipping it up-side down or taking it out altogether and using lower 5.25" bay (assuming upper one is taken up by an optical drive) + externally accessible 3.5" for your HDDs.

I did remove the drive cage. My hard drives while in the 5.25 and floppy bay have increased in heat to 50ish. They had been around 39 in the cage. That is the reason for the mod to remove the bottom of the cage to let the PSU breath. i'Il keep a single strip in place in the back around 1/2 inch for stability.

I would then also leave a 0.25"-0.50" strip in front too ...

50C is way too high of a temperature for an HDD (unless it's some 10000-15000 RPM SCSI). I have 4 HDDs (3 in cage, 4th in the 3.5" externally accessible bay) and all are around 30C (with right-side and front panel removed).

I'll be putting a 5th drive (lower 5.25" bay) in the next 2-3 days and closing up the case -- I can report what HDD temps I'm going to get in that setup.

get some higher speed fans. the stock ones are pretty bad. ive got my case performing as well as the "best" air cooled cases.

two high speed yate loons (rear intake and front exhaust) - one low speed yate loon on top acting as a blowhole. you need to put tape underneath the floppy as warm air exhausted can just go back in the case through that.

So with higher speed fans the hard drives are cooled really well as well as the CPU.

here are some pictures of my brothers new A05B. we modded it to make it more "thermal" friendly. he has an i7 setup.

basic specs : i7 920 @ 3.9ghz - idle temps in the mid 30's and loads in low 60's!
ati hd 4870 - does not go over 70c ever
two 640aals in raid 0 - temps in the high 20 and low 30's

ambient temp is around 22c.

new high speed yate loons - on the heatsink, rear intake and front exhaust fan. top two fans are low speed yate loons.

you need exhaust!

finished product. you know about the heat trapping in the top.
dsc01571ksc.jpg

the modded fan controller. also notice the open space under the floppy. you need to tape it off so hot air cant come back in.

and the finished case. great temps, can go silent if need be and is small.

Wow I just received my A05B today, don't see them on newegg anymore just the A05NB. Any other differences beside the removable top?

Waiting for my HDD to get here, loving this case so far!

As mentioned, removable top, vented PCI slot covers, openings in the mobo panel for better cable management, hard drive cage doesn't have holes on the side anymore (it's more open for air), and the most worthy change... there are a second set of mounting holes so that you can now use a BS-06 140mm fan exhaust instead of just the BS-03 120mm one. That's all that I can see right now.

I got my last A05 in Dec'08 and it had openings in the mobo tray back then (though it's true that earlier A05s did not have these openings). IMO, the HDD cage change does nothing to the airflow, as there's no side-to-side airflow to begin with. I believe it's meant to make easier putting HDDs in and taking them out (+ to eliminate the edges that need plastic U trim treatment).
A couple of other changes:
* it does not look like they glue the buzzer on the bottom of the case anymore (a welcome change, imo)
* plastic clips (for tool-less installation) on 5.25" bays

Sounds like you have the A05N for sure. Your PCI slot covers have slots in them too I bet.

Also, this picture http://lian-li.com/v2/tw/product/upload/image/PC-A05F/PC-A05N-07.jpg tells me that HDD cage is now removable!! (on newegg.com one of the images shows the reflection of the back side of the front panel onto the HDD cage and it suggests screws instead of rivets too)

Yep, it's removable. Here's some pics of the case I'm working on. Theme is going to be black and blue, waiting on the 790FX-GD70, 955 and Hyper-X DDR3 I just ordered last night.

I cut the bottom of the HD cage out and it lets the PSU intake air. The temp stayed the same as removing the HD. Would you like me to post pictures?

Nice pics! Have you had a chance to test the fans out yet? I saw those recently and was thinking about replacing my 800rpm Slipstreams if they're quiet enough.

Here is my mod, other then my sound dampening kit. Temps did not move since I reinstalled the cage and my HD temps are around 39. In the Floppy area the HD would be around 50ish.

Kipliq, nice cut. I see you went as far as removing the rails for the 3rd HDD in the cage ... is 39C you're measuring with the case closed or with a side off? I just installed 5th HDD closed up the case and I'm in the middle of copying 50GB of small files from the bottom 4 drives (RAID10) onto the 5th one which is sitting in the lower 5.25" bay. The temps are:
WD 640AAKS 38C (5.25" bay, the one files are written to)
ST 7200.11 35C (ext 3.5" bay)
ST 7200.11 37C (top cage)
ST 7200.11 35C (middle cage)
ST 7200.11 34C (bottom cage)
(room temp is around 70F, ACPI temp is 25C). So your 39C is probably a property of the drive rather than the case (provided the front fan is spinning @ full, etc), especially if you get 39C with the side off.

Conscript, I see that you put an exhaust fan at the top -- are you not concerned about all the dust that's going to be sucked in through those slotted PCI covers by this fan?

I'm debating putting a 140mm intake fan on top -- my 4830 is the loudest component of the system at the moment, so I want to replace it with passively cooled card complemented with a quiet intake. One thing that stops me is the amount of dust that's going to end up in the case after several months ... and, unfortunately, I have not seen any good aftermarket fans with removable / washable filters, let alone 140mm variety.

My room temp is around 82-86.
39 with the case closed. My temps went up a few when I install all the sound dampening form sheets, it must hold heat in the case.

I have a Vapor -x 4870 1GB and it is super quiet. the loudest item in my case is my corsair vx550 when i game other then that the case is nice and quiet when I watch movies and surf the web.

I'm only using the top 2 slots and thinking of getting a 1 TB drive and having a single drive.

The most efficient affordable insulator is air. This is why most insulation of any sort attempts to create small pockets of air, ie foam. It insulates both sound and heat.

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately 5 x Xigmatek = Extremely loudness. During nest week I'm buying Zalman Fan controller to reduce the Fan speeds.

Burdoror, daylight picture of the top of the case (from outside) is missing -- looks like you have an interesting grille up there. Also, did you consider posting smaller images linked to full-size ones?

those of you putting rad grills...where are you getting the screws? ive seen some that are hex type screws that are used to mount the grill to the case. any links? thanks

Rather than procrastinating till I get to do the window and the blowhole and till I sleeve all the cables (which might take another couple of years at the current course and speed) I decided to put everything together ... For now I stayed away from irreversible mods, so I just did a number of small things:
* removed the buzzer glued to the bottom of the case (mobo has one anyway)
* routed mobo aux power cable behind mobo
* routed front (exhaust) and rear (intake) fan power behind the mobo
* routed CPU fan power behind the mobo (the thinner sleeved cable in the "back of mobo tray" picture) -- it's connected to 12V, since Noctua fan is inaudible even at full speed
* installed C-02B CD/DVD bezel
* replaced stock grille on the intake (rear) fan with a fine-mesh removable/washable one (I think it restricts ariflow a bit more, but I'll take that over insane amounts of dust in the case)
* removed internal grille on the intake (rear) fan
* stuffed 5 HDDs into the case and tried not to create a cable mess ;)
