Hi I currently have a 74gig (8mb cache) raptor in my desktop, and I'm going to switch to a notebook for college.

I was wondering how the 7200rpm drives (200+ gigs...no idea how much cache is on them. The ones included with the dell laptops) compare to the raptor.

I really don't want to notice a slowdown. In order to not be slower should I just sack up and upgrade to the 128gb SSD for $200 (again not sure which one it is because dell won't give any info on them)?

You will notice a difference. Some say you won't but, on my laptop there is a night and day difference with my vertex ssd.

What you may want to consider is: purchase the laptop with the cheapest hdd option, then purchase a vertex ssd and dump dells bloated vista and install a fresh copy of vista onto the vertex ssd you buy from newegg or wherever. You can use your extra hdd as storage in bay two.

You will notice an INCREASE in speed from your desktop to laptop migration. :D

Since the upgrade to an SSD from dell is only like $200, is it worth spending $150 on top of that to ensure that I'm getting a legit SSD?

Sorry, I honestly don't know what Dell uses for SSD's. I wouldn't risk it unless I knew what I was buying, but, thats just me.

A little digging on the web seems to keep bringing up Dell and Samsung SSDs in the same articles.

$200 for a 128 gig HD means it aint gonna be a good one like an Intel or Vertex. I don't know anything about Samsung drives, so they are prolly middle of the pack as far as performance goes.

Don

they are a middle of the pack performers (experience from a recent order) but they would be substantially faster than a 7200RPM laptop drive.

If you have $200 and you wouldn't mind a 64GB drive , then you can purchase a OCZ Vertex 60Gb from tigerdirect, if you are willing to pay via paypal and use the live search (for cashback) it will drop down to $180.00

what's really the difference between a vortex and one from the middle of the pack? Somewhat substantial?

yes performance difference is pretty substantial.

When it comes to SSD, i would base my decision on reviews. There are a lot of SSDs in the market, and there are a fair share of lemons out there

But take it from a guy who went from a X25-M on his laptop (that i used everyday) and now using velociraptors (raid 0) in an everyday basis...
my desktop feels slow

The SLC above is slower in sequential R/W but will have substantially better IO (just from being SLC). Keep in mind that the Samsung is a 1.8" and has a mini sata interface.

buy the 60gb vertex, no doubt best bang for your buck. The read speed will be double that of the samsung.

I ordered the Dell Studio XPS 16 with the 128GB Samsung SSD for my wife. It should be here next week. I did a lot of research and it seems to be half the speed of the Intel or Vertex but everyone says it is still much snappier than a conventional hard drive. She needed more than 60GB and I got it as a $125 upgrade so I went for it. My wife really could care less so that motivated my decision. I plan on replacing my Velociraptor in my desktop after the OCZ Summit comes out so I can compare.

Thanks greengoose. When it comes can you look at the drive and see exactly which one it is?

Oh and one more thing (2 actually):

1) the vertex definitely doesn't studder right?

2) Is there any worry about this drive lasting upwards of four or five years? (College) I see that the warranty is only for two years and I know MLC are apparently less reliable than SLC

Vertex doesnt have this problem

I expect Vertex to be as reliable as Intel SSD and they (Intel) said you can write 100GB data on their 80GB MLC SSD every day for 5 years. And IMO in 2-3 years you will be able to buy bigger, faster SSD for 50$ so I wouldnt worry about that.
