LG L246W

Bingo! I took a stab at picking the right section in this new laid out nv_disp.inf and I picked the proper section first shot.

You now need to put this:

Code:
HKR,, OverrideEdidFlags0, %REG_BINARY%, 1E,6D,3F,56,00,00,FF,FF,04,00,00,00,7E,01,00
under the [nv_commonRestrictionsAndTiming_addreg] label for newer drivers.

Nice 1 Aviator747, but could you post full address/Location of this file please?

Sure, use a program such as Winrar to extract the contents of driver archive. Or start the installer up, wait until the installer screen comes up and then cancel out of the installer. Look on your C:\ and you will see a folder called Nvidia. Either way you do it you will see the nv_disp.inf file I speak of. :) Edit away, run the setup.exe in the folder. Ignore any driver signing errors and proceed as normal.

this doesn't work for me under Windows XP 32 bit, i think i've about pulled my hair out w/ the 185 series drivers tryin to get them to work.

i'm usin a L246WP-BN, (EDID is 1E,6D,3F,56, As you used in your example) using a pair of nvidia 260gtx core 216's.

Anybody else notice a dimming backlight over time?
I own 2 of these monitors, one I just bought a few weeks ago from 11CB, the other I've owned for almost 2 years.

With my old one running at 100% brightness, it's equivalent to about 30% brightness on the new monitor.
What a shame. If I had known running at 100% brightness would kill the backlights over the years, I wouldn't have done it. I only hope the monitor won't continue to get darker...

I didn't even notice the dimming until I bought the new monitor, and compared them side by side.

No but my second monitor I purchased a year after the first has a much cooler color than the first. FWIW, I run my backlight at 30%, 100% burns my retinas!

This is a very nice find, been waiting to try the new beta drivers, works like a charm !

Doesn't work for me either, using the Beta drivers anyway, just couldn't get it to work.
I'm using Windows 7 RC now with exactly the same thing, screen moves to the left?

pittbull: you sure you made the edit correctly? I just tried this on the beta drivers (185.81_geforce_win7_64bit_english_beta) for 64-bit windows 7 and it worked perfectly.

There were two "nv_disp.inf" files, one of which had win7 (or something like that) at the end. I edited both of them just to be safe, and it therefore seemed to work.

Well, i had to delete Windows 7 now because some games, punkbuster was playing up and kept getting kicked, but that's by the by anyway, so now installed Vista 64-bit again, and will ask an IT friend to have a go aswell to see if it works this time, i'm using Nvidia Drivers, 185.81.

I wish Nvidia would make up their minds for formating the nv_disp.inf file.Seems they have gone back to their previous formating and are using [nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings] once again. At least for the 182.52 build for Vista 64.

So Aviator747, where do we input the code too as disp.inf file is missing or changed to nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings?, as now i am using the 185.81 Beta drivers?

For the 182.51's you put the EDID info under the [nv_commonRestrictionsAndTiming_addreg] header. For the newest version, 182.52, you put the EDID info under the nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings headers. There is three of them.

Gah really?

I had to come back to this thread to figure out how to fix my Window 7 RC problem. So the new 182.52 reverts back to the old way?

I always wondered is the LG model the only LCD monitor that has this problem?

Not to much a big deal, except when I log-in the first time and try to access my start button waaaaaay on the left side of an invisible screen.

Now the Nvidia Drivers are 185.85?, now i can't find the link, have Nvidia changed or renamed it again?

Update:,, I found the link, installed the code, no difference, but i had the drivers fully installed, i didn't stop the install after the files were extracted, is that a crucial work around and not to have drivers installed for this to work?

With 185.85 they went back to the new method. Argh!, Why do they toggle back and forth like this?

Pitbull46, are you using Vista 64 again? You had no video drivers installed at all? Not even a set of MS drvers? When you say you just left it go after extracting, how did you extract them, by running the installer?

Does anyone notice that scaling via the NV control panel only works for the display's built-in scaling but not others? If you select NVIDIA's scaling it reverts back. This bug was present on Vista with my 8800 GTS. The bug went away with the GTX 260 under Vista and now it's back.

I also notice the refresh won't go to 60Hz and wants to stay at 59Hz. This seems like a bug because the monitor reports 60Hz. I never understood why there's a setting for 59Hz.

I'm using Win7 RC1.

Hi Aviator747, yes i am using Vista 64-bit now with 185.85 drivers.
What i meant was when installing Nvidia drivers i don't stop the install when or after extraction of drivers, i run the whole setup then go looking for the nv file, should i of stopped the install at extraction or doesn't it really matter?.

And i also had problems with my monitor's refresh rate i had to manually switch it to 60Mhz from either 25Mhz or 50Mhz and 59Mhz?

@ dark reign

Mine doesn't revert back if I select a diferent scaling option. Are you saying yes to the pop up box after you make the change? Mine says 60 Hz. 59 Hz is for Pal I belive. I jist noticed you are on win 7. I am on Vista 64. Oops! lol

@pitbull46

You are supposed to cancel out of the install to edit the file. Then run setup.exe from the same folder you edited the nv file in.

You are saying you left it run and it was ok? Hmm, could they have finally fixed the issue? Something is whacked with your refresh rates. Montior refresh rates are measured in Hz, Hertz. Not Mhz, Megahertz. Are you sure you don't have some custom resolution setup?

You need to stop the driver install, edit the nv_disp.inf file and then run setup from the extracted folder. For Win7, you need to edit the nv_disp_win7.inf file as well.

I think the refresh rate settings don't work at the moment, but the monitor reports 60Hz which is where it should be. My question was why this monitor has a 59Hz setting.

Yeah, I select yes and it goes right back to the display's scaling setting. It's not a huge deal because you can manually switch to 1:1 on the monitor when running a game at 1600x1200 without any stretching. I've got Vista on another partition if I need it to work for certain games.

The refresh rate gives me 59Hz and 60Hz. But the display has always reported 60Hz, so no biggie.

It's probably just a bug with NVIDIA's Win7 drivers. No suprise here.;)

I did some testing with a few games and selecting 4:3 aspect ratios work regardless of what the scaling setting reports in the NV control panel. The screen doesn't stretch and you get black bars on the sides. This must be a control panel glitch.

This is with a GTX 260 and Win7.

I did it the correct way this time, but it had no affect on my LG L245wp Monitor, exactly the same as if i installed the drivers normally, i give up , in some way i blame LG for not coming foreward or even admitting there is a fault with these L245/6 Monitors, but on the other hand Nvidia must take some blame for not helping to fix this aswell.
A great and expensive monitor when i bought it nearly 2yrs ago now, but now a piece of junk, it's still under warranty, it's had the latest firmware updated......?, i am just frusrated with LG not helping at all.

The L245W has a different EDID code than the L246W. Change the 3F to a 24 when editing the nv_disp.inf file. If this doesn't work then I'm not sure what the problem is.

These monitors are fine. The drivers are the problem. I do wish that LG would have provided a DVI connection because this would have avoided the problem altogether.

I did get the EDID code to work by just adding it to the registry before installing the drivers. I didn't need to edit the nv_disp.inf file. Ironically it goes into the same place it did under Vista:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then add a new binary value:
OverrideEdidFlags0

Then modify and manually add the code:
1E 6D 3F 56 00 00 FF FF 04 00 00 00 7E 01 00

Change the 3F to a 24 if you have a L245W.

Note the registry key at the top of the nv_disp.inf file (yours may be different):

ClassGUID = {4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I'm not sure this is going to stick with Win7 like it did with Vista. I'll report back if it doesn't during the next driver upgrade.

Thanks for the info Dark_Region, do i have to add the code to every section, Section 001,002,003,004,005,006, for it too work as i have done?

No. Just add it under that key and not under any subkeys. It seems that after you install the drivers, it adds OverrideEdidFlags0 code to the 0000 subkey.

I believe that when you uninstall the drivers, that subkey gets deleted but leaves the other key in place so that you don't need to edit the nv_disp.inf everytime you update the drivers.

If that doesn't work then try the driver method and be sure to change the 3F to a 24.

This is confusing me guy's?

The simplest way to install this is to modify the nv_disp.inf by doing the following:
  1. Start the installation of the latest Nvidia drivers and cancel out once the files are extracted
  2. Open nv_disp.inf. By default for the current drivers this is in C:\NVIDIA\WinVista\169.25
  3. In the [nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings] section add the following:
    Code:
    HKR,, OverrideEdidFlags0, %REG_BINARY%, 1E,6D,3F,56,00,00,FF,FF,04,00,00,00,7E,01,00
  4. Uninstall your current drivers and reboot
  5. Install the modified drivers by running the previously extracted setup.exe. By default for the current drivers this is in C:\NVIDIA\WinVista\169.25. You'll get a warning about the driver not being signed because of the modified inf. Just press OK.
Uninstall your current drivers and reboot?, you mean the extracted one's, won't that uninstall the code you just inputed.

Install the modified drivers by running the previously extracted setup.exe. By default for the current drivers this is in C:\NVIDIA\WinVista?, didn't i just uninstall the drivers before reboot?.

So shouldn't i just install the drivers i just downloaded?

You need to add the code in your newly downloaded and extracted drivers folder: After modifying and saving the nv_disp.inf with that code, run the setup.exe that is in the same folder. You'll get a warning message since you modified the inf. I suppose you could uninstall the current drivers if you want to start "clean" prior to running the setup for the new drivers.

If your using Windows 7, you will need to modify the nv_disp_win7.inf as well.

Yep did exactly as instructed thankyou, but no change.
Surely the Monitor must be at fault now not the drivers?

I would even let Aviator or Jordan1 do it remotley for me, but as my m8 is an IT Engineer and he after reading the instructions on how to do it, it still made no difference guy's?.

Did you change the 3F to a 24?

Are you adding the EDID code here?:

[nv_commonRestrictionsAndTiming_addreg]
HKR,, OverrideEdidFlags0, %REG_BINARY%, 1E,6D,24,56,00,00,FF,FF,04,00,00,00,7E,01,00

Are you installing the 185.85 drivers?

Did you try the registry hack and then reboot after applying it?

Yes, Yes, and Yes, all of the above, without a single change?:mad:

After I extract the lastest drivers I dont see "nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings" in windows 7, I seen it in vista tho. Any help?

Didn't NVIDIA change it to [nv_commonRestrictionsAndTiming_addreg] with the 185.85 drivers for both Vista and Win7?

I never bother to uninstall previous drivers when installing new ones. I extract, edit and then install. You will get a warning saying the drivers are not signed. No biggie, say yes and continue on.

EDIT: Here is a link to a premodified Nv_disp.inf file http://www.yousendit.com/download/MnFpQ3R3UzhJMHZIRGc9PQ

This is for Vista 64 version 185.85 drivers. Download them and extract as normal then copy over the Nv_disp.inf with the supplied one and then run the setup.exe. It works fine on my LG L246W.

Aviator 747 i thankyou, bloody hell how come no one else had this idea of Premodding the Nv_disp file before for everyone to download it, thankgod someone did.
I extracted drivers then stopped it, copied pasted Nv_disp file to folder, ran setup, went smothley, restarted, omfg same thing no change, then,Doh, forgot to change 3F to 24 as my monitor is the L245wp, saved it, restarted no change, but i realised it had been too late as i had already installed drivers anyway, so uninstalled everything, done it again, and at last, it worked like a dream, thnx again.

Our mistake was we had been putting it in the wrong place, it took me 15min to find where u had put it, but obviously i found it, bloody fantastic, had rang LG Today to ask for a swap as mine was faulty, they did agree with swap, good job they didn't have any in stock. :D ;):)

Sorry to hear all these problems with screen shifting and having to edit all these obscure settings, what a pain!

FWIW I run Vista64, 9800GTX and a monoprice HDMI>DVI cable and I've never had any problems.
