From what I've read, everything suggests I should get a 260. It's slightly cheaper than the 4870 now, and seems to perform better overall. But I kind of want the 4870 because my motherboard only supports crossfire, so I'm torn at the moment.

Any other reasons to get a 4870 over a 260?

I like the 4870 better but both cards are equivalent.
IMO, DirectX 10.1 > PhysX.
Other features such as noise should also be considered.

Not really, but they perform so close to one another in most games and are so close in price that it is still a tough choice. If you really think crossfire is likely for you then the 4870 is the way to go. If getting that second card for crossfire is not so likely, then prolly the the 260 would be a slightly better way to go. Both are damn good cards for the money, and neither choice is really a bad one. Either way you go it is unlikely that you will really have cause for regrets.

Edit: Forgot to mention hardware accelerated PhysX. Obviously if you are into that feature, then the 260 is the way to go. As of yet hardware accelerated PhysX has not been used in any earth shattering way in actual games imho, but it may be another consideration in your decision.

Both cards are close to each other in price and performance. The choosing factor would be customer service and preferances in construction. I generally prefer Evga or if I wanted to try Ati I would choose XFX.

Not sure if it matters for you, but the primary reason I choose a 4870 over a GTX260 is that the 4870 is 9.5" and the GTX260 is 10.5". Without mods, the 260 wouldn't fit in my Antec Solo case.

If you are going for a 1GB 4870, isn't the 1GB 4890 just in reach? That would make your decision a little easier.

If you are gaming at 2560x1600 then get a GTX 260 core 216, any other resolution the 4870 1GB is marginally better.

I believe the gtx 260 216 is a better performing card. It is also quiet. If you are going to try multicard setup, you have your answer.
