Just ordered the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA

If you end up needing to RMA the monitor you just received, how can you tell if the replacement is not a refurbished one? Some people have said that when you're doing the RMA process you should tell them to make sure to send a brand new one, but I don't trust businesses even if they assure me that it will be brand new. So in order to be sure, how can you physically tell the difference by inspecting the replacement?

Bought one of these last week, got here yesterday. Love it so far - but a bit of backlight bleed in bottom left corner (Only notice it with a black screen or playing a dark game such as Thief).

One question, I'm on the Win7 beta, and I tried adding 10e's colour profile (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1033705844#post1033705844), but after adding it to the color management menu for this monitor and removing the default one that was there nothing seemed to happen. Should adding this make a visible difference, have I just screwed up the process somehow?

First time messing around with colour profiles, or a half decent monitor for that matter.

One call to Dell and there are officially on the way..

I got it yesterday, took it to work and set it up. Very nice IMHO. Better quality and easier on my eyes than the 24" P-MVA Soyo Topaz I have at home, and it destroys the 17" TN Planar I was working with. Plus, stand control is FABULOUS, never seen a monitor anywhere near this good. No dead pixels either. I'll have to play with the settings at lunch to see if I can tweak anything, but it looks pretty darn good right now. Have brightness set to 25, contrast 75, and everything else standard. Looking like a sweet deal for $220 total.

Use this freeware utility for Windows - The DisplayProfile freeware utility allows you to store multiple monitor profiles for your PC and have a way to easily switch between them:

I ordered the 2209WA a couple of days ago. It took two tries with their "Business Chat" to get the $212 price. But I actually am charging this to my at-home business and half of its usage will be for business and especially photo editing (gaming for the other half). I was asked to provide my business name and phone number as verification of my business - I suppose.

I was a bit concerned because it appears it will be two weeks between ordering and delivery. But looking at RAFA's delivery notice, I guess that's normal.

Waited quite a while for a 22" widescreen that I could use for gaming and photo editing! This will be sweet - I hope.

Just ordered mine with Trish on Small Business Chat at $212. What a freakin' steal. Curiously, my est. delivery date is 5/8/09, a whole month away. She said they were only 7 days out, currently, and that it shouldn't take a whole month.

Just got two of them in.

Beautiful monitors. Thanks are in order for everyone posting in this thread who helped me decide to go with them.

Just got mine today and it's awesome! Large improvement over my old acer al1916 or whatever it was called! One quick question though, when you position the monitor vertical whats the quickest way to make the screen scale to the new format and is there a way to make it switch automatically?

the easiest way to switch the display from landscape to portrait is to assign a hotkey to that function. It isn"t automatic but it is easy to do.

how is the look of the anti-glare coating on the 2209wa? is it very sparkly like the 2007wfp or lighter?

If you received a new DELL 2209WA e-IPS display such as the one in THIS LINK, would you return it only due to the backlight bleed shown?

No dead pixels I can see. The bleed is the only thing wrong with it, but it is noticable, even in a lit room.

I think it's more pronounced than the linked pic shows ... I struggled to get a representative pic w/o over brightening the whole thing. If it helps, the camera settings were 6mp, ISO 200, F2.8, shutter 1/6 sec, 1-2x zoom, white balance "cloudy", all else "standard".

Thanks for ANY help!

You must be joking! This is minimal, are you sure it's noticable in normal use?
You must have the closest to perfect monitor in this thread...

Even if the pic is less than reality, it looks pretty good to me. How far away are you when you take the picture?

Take them at different distances (ie. 2, 3, 4 feet) from the same position in front of the monitor, and the furthest one should give you the truest representation.

IPS monitors with no A-TW polarizer will show you a hazy white glow on blacks so you want to distinguish true Backlight bleed from this glow first. This glow shows up from angles above, below, right left, etc.... so don't confuse BLB with this.

Even then, other than what looks to be a bit on the top right there doesn't seem to be much if any elsewhere.

1. guys, since this thread is so long, I need a bit of help of find all available user-made/calibrated icc profiles for this monitor - could you post link to them, and which do you recommend (and with which settings)?

2. is it possible to set color temperature? if yes, how (can't see it in the menu)? similarly, how to check what is the currently set color temperature for this monitor?

3. how to get into service menu and there are any interesting/beneficial settings to change/set there?

4. Is the the (user-maintained) FAQ for this monitor somewhere (with useful info/tips/tricks/links to icc profiles etc)? would be nice to have all essential info gathered in 1 place..

Sweet, just got it for the 212 with free shipping via the chat. Time to prep my LG L227WTG for ebay. :D

Hey guys, I just recieved one of these today and I'm seeing a pink/green tint as reported seen in the LP2475w.

It's only noticeable on white/grey backgrounds and it's not really such a big deal for me as the panel is perfect other than this, dead/stuck pixels are more important than unifomity for me personally.

Just posting to see if any other owners have encountered this and to give a heads up that I encountered it as I haven't seen it in this thread so far although forgive me if I missed it, it is a 50 page thread.

Thanks for educating me. I was ~2 ft away or a little more for all pix. This means the 2209WA has no A-TW polarizer? For all my research thus far, I didn't know about the polarizer or hazy glow.

Also glad to see my first decent LCD since CRTs may be commonly acceptable, esp. amongst such a discriminating group here. I'm just trying to see if I have a lemon ... y'know, where this one ranks on the scale of acceptable to unacceptable in the current LCD world and esp. amongst other 2209WAs out there. With little LCD experience, I don't know if I'm seeing great stuff or something I shouldn't put up with (all relative to what I "should" expect).

As a FINAL attempt to determine if this is the photographer's (my) fault or not (then I promise to leave it alone), I just posted 2 more pix. I can't seem to control the EV in "full" manual mode (on a Sony H2), so I don't know how much that affects this.

Remember the FIRST ONE was taken in 6mp mode, ISO 200, F2.8, 1/6 sec exposure, WB mode = cloudy. Maybe too short exposure?

THIS 2ND ONE was taken in VGA mode (640x480, my mistake), ISO 80, F2.8, 1.0 sec exposure, WBmode = daylight. Maybe too long?

THIS 3RD ONE was taken in 16:9 mode (1920x1080), ISO 80, F2.8, 2.5 sec exposure, WB mode = daylight.

I suspect there are some here who are more knowledgeable about both digital photography and LCDs who can tell from my settings which of my 3 pix is most likely the truest (or tell me the settings I should try again with). From that, I can figure either:

1) my original pic was too dark and not representative, but these 2 show how bad it really is (and, thus, maybe this LCD should still go back for a replacement 2209WA, which should be a better unit?)

OR

2) these 2 new pix are just over exposed (and, thus, not showing reality, this LCD is just fine relative to other 2209WAs and it should stay).

Thanks all for your thoughts on this!

This just in: all LCD technology is susceptible to backlight bleed. Taking photos of a monitor is a terrible way of judging it.

Did you buy your monitor to display a blank black page all of the time? No? Then stop worrying about it, get over it, and start using your monitor like it was intended.

anyone know how this would compare to a 4 year old Dell 2005FPW ??!!

Very well. Having had both the viewing experience is quite similar but the 2209WA has the advantage of better contrast, lower input lag, and faster response time. The 2005FPW has an edge in the stand dep't but not by much. It adjusted higher than the 2209WA. Otherwise the 2209WA is similar but "better" in most categories.

Blueman I think you can put the issue to rest. If you are resorting to 2.5 second exposure times to show us an issue with your black levels, then they must be fine. 2.5 seconds is a very long exposure. It's tough to say for sure, but I don't see much backlight bleed with your screeen.

1. Here's the link for my profile. You use 74 contrast, 99 red, 98 green, 100 blue in the "custom RGB" preset for the screen under "color settings". With a Delta E94 of around 0.20 this is a very accurate profile for this contrast level:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1RAVJ1I6

2. There are three presets: Standard, Cool, Warm. I'm assuming warm is 5000K, cool 9300K and standard should approximate D65 or around 6500K. To manually change it a calibrator/colorimeter package should help there and you can go into Custom RGB and change it by raising/lowering red, green and blue values.

3. There didn't seem to be any beneficial settings in the service menu for me. If you change ANY settings make sure to write them down FIRST! To get in: Turn off the screen and hold the brightness and menu buttons first. Then turn on the monitor WHILE holding the brightness and menu buttons. Eventually it will go into "color burn in" mode. To get out hit and hold the INPUT key, and then it will go back to normal. Then hit the brightness key to get into the service menu which is a blue box top left. To get out hit MENU.

10e: thanks for the anwser

what gamma level is your profile? isn't it too dark?

and more newbie questions: is your profile usable only at C=74, Br=0? Can I use it with another C, Br values?
same applies for R99,G98,B100 - is it *only* usable with these values? Have you set them to R99,G98,B100 so white point is at 6500K? (and if I chance any of R, G, B it will change from 6500K?

Another Q: what's the diff between your profile file and default Dell supplied 2209wa.icm one?

Finally, what do you think of this:

http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1033712084&postcount=413

could you make a profile for C=73, Br=3 as mentioned there (if a new one is needed)?

2.2 is the gamma level. It should be pretty close to bang on. I think it was precisely 2.17 average, so that would make it a tiny bit lighter, not darker.

R0ach's monitor is different than mine, as is his color calibrator so I would assume he would get different results. You can have two monitors from the exact same batch, one serial number apart and still get different initial color qualities/characteristics so I'm not surprised his settings/preferences are different too.

The contrast should be 74, brightness can be other values if you'd like brighter.

Yes, 99,98,100 set the white point to as close to D65/6500K on MY screen. Mileage may vary and you might find it too green, pink or bluish, but I don't think the variance would be huge. If you change the values for red, green, blue, you will likely alter the white point, as well as the other colors' qualities but you are more than welcome to do so.

The Dell profile only stipulates monitor parameters like gamut and gamma, and I'm pretty sure they have no real monitor color adjustments built in.

I don't think it would be worth it to make a profile for Contrast=73, as it would be almost identical to the one I currently have.

10e:

does this all mean your profile is useless for all other 2209wa monitors out there (from diff. batches and so on) but yours? sorry, you got me confused now..

and, was it confirmed by now whether 2209wa is 6-bit or 8-bit (if 8-bit then why there's banding on some webpages??)

yes because each monitor is different. The same applies to HDTVs as well

and, was it confirmed by now whether 2209wa is 6-bit or 8-bit (if 8-bit then why there's banding on some webpages??)

The e-IPS used in 2209WA is native 8bit and mine doesn't suffer from any form of banding

The 2209WA is 100% 8-bit per channel. There is no dithering or other untoward effects of 6-bit implementation.

It isn't useless, but if you want the most accurate colors the best thing to do is to get a colorimeter like the Eye One Display 2 for yourself and calibrate your screen. In absence of that, using another screens' profile is still likely better than out-of-box calibration.

sweet- ordered one this morning. I got on the online chat and simply asked if "...the special deal for the 2209wa was still going on?" and was immediately given a price of 212 before tax, and after five minutes or so got a quote emailed to me. just over $226 total.

10e:

1 more thing:

by R99,G98,B100 you mean "upper" or "lower" levels of each. It seems you need 2 presses of a key to get +/- 1.

so R99 - 1 or 2 presses (-) from 100
G98 - 1 or 2 presses (-) from 99
B100 - 1 or 2 presses (+) from 99
