Wolf3d has been ported over to the iPhone and is available for $4.99 in the app store.

wow! just downloaded it. brings back memories. it's still a blast to play. definitely worth $5.

Awesome...installing now. ;) It's only 9.9MB so 3G can pull it FTW!!! Will report back. ;)

Yeah tell me how it works out. I am kinda interested in it myself.

LMAO AWESOME!!!

It's everything we remember it being. Everything from the music and sounds to the blood on the floor. All the same missions and weapons. Looks exactly like it did all those years ago.

I like the controls. Will take a bit to get used to it though. Left thumb controls foward, back and turn left and right. right thumb fires weapon.

Tilting left/right and up/down speed up your movements. Menu system has Sensitivity controls for all of that as well.

Best part is when you choose a new game they still have ALL of the options.

Can I play, Daddy?
Don't Hurt me.
Bring 'em on!
I am Death incarnate!

Well worth $5. So much time to kill at work now. ;)

pretty cool but id much rather have doom...

Funny you say that...

Doom is what Carmack is porting next or so he says. ;)

And this game should be used as a guide for how to code for the iPhone. Every other application I have is shit compared to this one. It's small and it's lighting fast loading and closing.

It is so incredibly optimized it's scary. Completely efficient code. My iPhone isn't bogged down after quitting something like Fieldrunners. Love it love it love it...speaking of which time to go back and put that chaingun to use some more. ;)

Keep in mind that the iPhone is about a hundred times more powerful than the machine you played Wolfenstein 3D on...

while true (i first played it on a 386 sx 16mhz ;) )
I think he means that other iPhone games are just incredibly bogged down.
try Oregon trail, or platinum solitaire... they aren't even 3D, yet they can, undoubtedly, make my iPod music skip, halt, and stutter while playing them.

Also note that even Wolf3d on the PC was HEAVILY optimized. I learned a lot of my tricks of C/Assembler optimization by studying the wolf3d engine source for nights on end.

Really? That's just fucking depressing, that is. Oregon Trail would probably run on my TI-83, for crying out loud!

Well yeah, but fine-tuning assembler can't make an ancient CPU able to compete with the ARM or whatever the iPhone is using, even when it's bogged down with the OS.

If you have Jailbroken your iPhone, it is free in the Cydia installer.

Dare I say the best iPhone game ever? If only the thing had a directional pad...damn.

Yep that's exactly what I meant. :)

Applications like Oregon Trail, Monopoly, Scrabble, Tap Defense and a few others just make the iPhone slow to respond for a little while after you're done. Not so with Wolf3D. My iPhone runs along like normal regardless of how long I've been playing Wolfenstein.

Can't wait for the Doom port!!

My left thumb is sore as hell and my productivity has taken a nose dive since getting this. I cant wait for Carmack to port doom and doom2 over. I know its asking too much but I wonder if just quake1 could be done or some variant of it?

It's probably possible... wasn't Quake1 OpenGL based?

+1 for getting this. All things considered, the game is a great port. The controls work pretty darn well, mapping the arrow keys to an analog-ish area on the screen, and firing is just tapping a giant button in the bottom corner, so all in all, great job by Carmack getting this thing ported over.

It's all your fault . . . I nuked a lot of time way back when with the original release and now the cycle has started all over again . . .

I finally got a chance to try this game out, was pretty fun to play.

anyone that bought this game, there is an update available. switchable weapons, control location customization, play your own music, reverse landscape play, higher res textures, savegame fixes, and more!
