whats this i've come across here and there about a 9800GX2 being faster than a GTX 280 (some newegg reviews)? is that true? i ask because i stepped up from a 9800GX2 back in nov i think because the price dropped so drastically on the 9800 and i figured heck, for 30 some dollars i can have the latest and greatest and not lose so much money on what i initially paid.

at the time i was gearing up for SCII and Diablo 3 but considering there's no definite date on those i'm wondering if i should sell my 280 while it's still got some value and hold on to that money for another upgrade closer to release or what?

i bought the GX2 to play crysis and after playing crysis and running a couple of vantage benchmarks it didn't render another game after that. aside from playing quake live my 280 hasn't gotten any kind of workout either, not even a bench, so i really feel like i need to ditch it before it drops down drastically in price too and i lose out.

i can't believe the 9800 performs as well as it does against it. i'll be honest, i didn't research anything i just saw that i could pay a little bit of money to step up to the newer card and figured it would keep me from losing money.

are there any of you video card guys that can tell me what are the differences between those 2 cards? is a 295 the same as the 280 but with higher clock speeds and maybe more ram?

the 295 is sort of a mix between the 280 and 260.. has the same amount of ram as the 260 but 240shaders like the 280

it has lower clock speeds than than the 280 but higher than the 260.. so its a mishmash.. that they then sandwiched together to make the 295

that's kinda craise - why not put the number as 275 instead of 295? a bit misleading from the sound of it.

i'm confused. seems like it would be pointless to get rid of my 280 to get a 295. i might list it on ebay or on here and just apply that money to whatever generation of cards are out when those games are released.

Short answer....No it isn't faster than a 280 at all.

cool, thanks for the input guys.

i'm probably gonna ebay it and just use a cheapie card for a while. no sense in that card sitting in my case not doing anything but depreciating in value.

The 9800GX2 was the worst card I've ever owned. Microstutter killed any performance increase you got from it.

The 295 is a single card SLI solution kinda like the 9800GX2 but based on the new tech.

Yeah. A 295 is like two GT200 cores (GTX 275) sandwiched together like the 9800GX2 is two G92 cores. (9800gt/8800gt)

the 7950gx2, 9800gx2, 4850x2, 4870x2, and GTX 295 are the only dual-gpu cards on the market today. There are like two others im missing, but nobody uses them.

ahh ok

i was thinking it was a dual card setup like the 9800GX2 i traded in on it. well that's good to know. has anything changed on the motherboard front or do you still have to run an nvidia chipset to use nvidia cards in an SLI setup? i've got a DFI x38 based board. i think it's a T2RB.

Nvidia was suposedely going to unlock SLI on intel chipsets, but I don''t know what happened to that.

As far as my knowledge; the Intel X58 is the only chipset made by Intel able to run SLI. Other than that, your looking at getting a NForce-based motherboard if you want to run SLI.

P35, P45, X38, and X48 cannot run SLI.

The X38 board you have is pretty sweet. As far as video cards, the HD4870 by ATI is you best bang for buck and you can find them used here from 140$

gtx280>>>>>9800gx2

Newegg reviewers often don't know what they're talking about.

I think they are pretty even in preformance although I would rather have a GTX 28X becuase of the simplictity and the fact that it put out less heat than the 9800GX2.

yah i noticed most people on newegg shouldn't be allowed to post reviews or even opinions for that matter but all rumors, false information, etc starts somewhere so i just wanted to know what it was based on. i dont stay on top of this stuff like i used to which is what led me to asking here.

it is a pretty nice board skater and i'm able to overclock my e8400 to 4ghz on air with it. i hate to even start looking for another board for sli support but i'll probably just wait on all of it until those games come out or i actually start getting that kind of use out of the computer, whichever comes first.

i gotta say i can't believe how much heat that card puts out considering there is only one GPU on board. i never thought twice when i was thinking there were two cards on it, but one... man that is crazy.

I've got a 780i that I've got an E8400 OC'ed to over 4Ghz on. I think someone was selling a used 780i for 135 in the forums if you want to do SLI.

~15-18 months or so. I got one last march and it had already been out a while.

Yeah 15-18 months sounds right. I've had mine since last Feb I think.

I've been 99% happy with mine. My only grip is I can't adjust the GTL-VREF to a minus like you can on the 790i. However, even with that I've been able to post a 4GHz OC on my 8400, I was running for a while at 4.5, but was not intelburntest stable at those speeds.

ATI is putting out better cards for the money at the moment. You should take a look at some of the cards in the red camp and hold onto that DFI you have.

GX2 =STUTUTUSTUTTER GTX280 =SMOO000ooo000OOOth at the same fps.I have 2 8800 GTS 512 SLI and i'm trying to sell them and get a GTX285 .

Is the stutter thing limited to the GX2's hardware or is it something that could be fixed in a driver?

The stuttering is caused by the dual gpu config on one card "sandwich style" design. A software fix is possible but Nv is unwilling to acknowledge this fact or make specific driver adjustments to correct the issue.

Just out of curiosity, when did you suddenly become a video card software engineer?

If you're going to dispute this fact please do so. So far you have brought nothing to the table but sarcasm.

I'm simply asking for something more than:

"Well a flux capacitor works because it has the power to dissolve aluminum into protons while combining them with jelly".

I am not a graphics card engineer. However, I fail to see where the motivation for Nvidia is to knowingly cripple its own cards. And without anything for Nvidia to profit from, I don't see them not putting in a simple driver fix to fix the problems.

and BTW, sarcasm is much more useful than misinformation.

Hardware manufacturers and software developers will often deny problems with their software until they fix them. For the first year after HL2's release, there was a bad sound stutter bug having to do with their engine. Even though lots of people had the problem, they publicly ignored it--until they announced that they had fixed it. They hadn't, but they weren't willing to admit the issue existed on any large scale. It's the same story with Creative drivers; they were broken on Vista for years after they should have been working. This kind of thing happens all the time.

Read up a bit and then come back with an informed critique.
