The war of the words between Intel and AMD just heated up another notch. AMD, after claiming Intel has “fabricated claims” against them, now says that Intel would “like them dead.” Pass the popcorn folks, I think this one is going to get good.

Wolin doesn't buy into the oft-repeated theory that Intel needs AMD to keep the industry honest and to keep the U.S. government at bay. "I don't agree with the premise that they have to have us and they think they have to have us. I think they would absolutely like us dead," Wolin said.

P4 wasn't really crap. It held it's own through each iteration. Well Willamette sucked ass, but that was from being cache starved.

no the P4 was crap. it was horribly inefficient compared to what AMD was offering at the time and an utter joke compared to the core2. it was designed to push out more clockspeed to sell it instead of actual performance.

Innefficient, yes, but it held it's own.

Well, does this mean that it wasn't really Nvidia who started that fight and Intel is the bully?

If AMD were to die and come back as a zombie, would they be a tank, boomer, smoker, or a hunter?

inneficient and crap!
it had a rediculous pipeline length that made is so that anything other then multimedia a piece of shit!

I had a 1.6GHz P3 running circles around a 2.4GHz P4 while doing number crunching

it wasn't until the Core2 came out did I finally see a decent CPU (since the P3) from Intel

Face it the P4 is shit!

Riiiigggghhhht. A CPU from Intel that cost hundreds was only about as fast as a CPU from AMD that cost about $50 (Athlon XP).

The P4 was crap compared to what AMD was offering at that time. When the Athlon 64 was released, it blew anything away that Intel had to offer at the time.. which was STILL the P4.

Oh... even the original Slot-A Athlons were a ton faster than what Intel was offering at the same time.

So then Intel hit it big with the Core2, and AMD is starting to catch up again.

Gosh, I hope that they didn't just realise that in a short while. Afterall Intel is not there just to be a friend. If AMD is dead, Intel will gain a lot of benefits because eventhough AMD is really small compared to Intel, the competition they put up against Intel is much larger than their company size.

This is nothing but trying to show who has the bigger "stick."

Intel can't live without AMD because of anti-trust laws. AMD goes away and Intel is an instant monopoly.

AMD will fork over some money and that'll be the end of it.

Intel, like AMD, is a corporate that wants your money, and wants to turn a profit. Intel is achieving that goal, and AMD is a speed bump in their way. It sounds to me like Intel's leadership is doing a fine job.

Intel is just using the system the government has given them. Intellectual Property rights, the Patent system, creates government protected monopolies (ignoring the morality of this). Just like you have no obligation to share your home with the bum on the street, they have little obligation to share the fruit of their R&D efforts. If AMD violated the terms of that contract, then Intel has an obligation to it's shareholders to protect their property.

Intel's Core2 and i7 wouldn't be what they were had AMD not licensed its x86_64 extensions to the instruction set. Yes, Intel is using AMD's x64 instructions, grudgingly. (Renamed to EMT64, but was still written by AMD).

If intel wants to stop AMD from using cross-licensing or whatever (something from a recent news post) they must be scared of what AMD has around the corner.

If AMD were to die and come back as a zombie, would they be a tank, boomer, smoker, or a hunter?

I vote smoker,

they would sit in the background and every now and then throw out a kick ass processor, then die soon after

Nope. The thing is simply that Intel has an obligation to its shareholders (and indirectly the law) to defend its IP and legal contracts.
As such, it has no choice but to call out AMD on breaching the license agreement with their split-up.

Intel has nothing to be scared about, because there IS nothing around the corner from AMD, just look at their roadmap.. listen to the sound of crickets.

I rarely go to AMD conferences anymore. Intel conferences are all about innovation and what is coming down the line. AMD starts off talking about innovation, but it always ends up as an Intel bash fest that sounds more like they're whining. I am a huge Intel fan, but I want to see AMD turn things around for the sake of competition. I want to see AMD having conferences again that are not about US vs Intel.

Intel rarely mentions AMD at their conferences, and it never sounds like they even consider them to be a threat.

Oh BOO HOO. AMD can't compete on merit, so they have to throw a tantrum screaming 'NO FAIR!'. Time to call the WAAAAAAAAMBULANCE.

Seriously though, they HAD to see this coming. Problem is, they had no choice but to go through with the split. I guess it came down to 'Don't spin off fabs and run out of money and die soon.' -or- 'Spin off fabs and hope some liberal court lets me get away with it or else die later.' Tough spot to be in.

Somehow I imagine Paul Otellini at a board meeting looking like Mr. Burns and saying 'excellent'.:D

No, the anti-trust lititgation that would instantly insue would be much much much worse than the "competition" from AMD.

Umm it was Intel that actually went BOO HOO HOO when they started legal procedings w.r.t. AMD spinning off their Foundries

please RTFA and all associated news abt the topic before you make yourself look any more foolish

Not really, AMD has known since 1991 that the x86 cross-license agreement terms won't allow it.
Also, Intel hasn't started legal proceedings yet. They've given AMD an ultimatum to come to a resolution in the current dispute. After the ultimatum, the cross-license agreement terms entitle Intel to start legal proceedings.

No, everything the articles show and represent, is that Intel is doing their responsible duty to protect their property and their shareholder's investments.

P4 was crap, no matter what you guys say, core 2 was good, but outdated compared to amd's design. but was good.

Outdated means, FSB as transport media, Non IMC, well, still very good.

Athlon, and duron where really good.
amd have made great chips, almost always, amd have always had their place in the market.

Let me ask you guys, find a dell mag from 2005 or simular, what you see, expensive, VERY expensive P4 systems, that does nothing compared to amd's systems, wonder why o.0.
This is the income amd could have had to be more competetive now.

Isnt it licence for design and selling, not making ?

Yes, the FSB was outdated, but the rest of the CPU makes AMD's CPUs seem outdated, with Intel's higher IPC, larger caches and lower power consumption.

Nope.
They did the same to Cyrix, more or less.
Cyrix actually got away with not having a license for designing and selling x86 processors... But they were only allowed to manufacture the processors by companies that did have an x86 licenes, such as IBM and Texas Instruments.

This doesn't surprise me, beat the man while hes down is the latest trend.

Dude, this isn't AMDzone. Your fanboyism is showing. LOLZ

fyi I only buy Intel for my CPU's I have never owned an AMD CPU (I do use their EEPROM's for work tho)

plus what does fanboy-ism have todo with someone saying that AMD are going "BooHooHoo"

This.

I am also a big Intel fan and have been since the mid 90s, but I've always wanted to see some good competition. I've had my fair share of AMD based systems and they have all performed to my expectations. I still have my Athlon t-bird 1.33333333333 :) and a newer X2 6000 system now. It is unfortunate about what is going down but whatever. Just going to see how this turns out. :)

AMD doth protest too much.

Really, why do you think they gloss over the contract specified mediation and skip to talking about lawsuits? Probably because they know they will lose mediation.

Yeah, I guess I was being a little trollish by calling you fanboi. I just couldn't understand someone taking offence to me making fun of AMD's lawyers. Sniff, Sniff... 'Stupid Intel, they just want us dead.' Sniff, Sniff...

amd was incredibly competitive in the p4 era, athlon xp, through the a64 and the x2's were amazing....

then core2 happened. This is the way competition is supposed to be, however somewhere along the line they decided to tank amd, which is a shame, Intel needs the competition. I just wish amd would release a cpu that can stand toe to toe with intel like they had before.

The bitching back and forth does sound a bit too much like whining for my taste.

and yes the p4 sucked.

Im an intel fanboy, but without real competition, whose to say intel wouldnt get lazy and jack up prices, and get really lazy

Exactly, AMD was competitive because the P4 sucked. Now that Intel has non-sucking architectures again, where is AMD?
