Hi

i have ben reading some of the threads on the Nec 2490wuxi where people are having some troubles with them (noise being one)

and then they are saying its serial number and date it was made in

i hope to be getting a 2490 next week and wanted to find out how to read the serial number to see when it was made.
and if the noise problems are happening before a certain date they were made etc..

many thanks

I own the Nec 2490 and I hear no noise coming from it whatsoever. I believe I bought it around July 08.

what do those numbers mean - 2EF and where to find it
and also the build date is it on the box or on actual monitor somewhere?)

how long was your monitor on for before you heard the noise -
did you hear the noise as soon as you turned it on or after some time ??

thanks

Mine has the noise (Germany).

Mine has the noise (Germany).

This has more to do with where than when. Almost everyone complaining about noise with the 2490/2690 is in Europe. I have seen these complaints for some time (2690).

AFAIK it is the same monitor as the North American model, but putting in a higher input voltage (and frequency lower?) seems to cause more noise.

The reason you would see 2490 noise complaints pop up recently is because the 2490 only just became available in Europe recently.

I dont hear a thing from mine, had it over 6 months now. And very happy with the LCD, just one problem. I dont have two of them......

Didnt think Id ever give up my Sony CRT's.

thanks for letting me know about the 2490's Snowdog

thanks, shane c.

Im in the U.S

You just get use to the hum, my system has 6 fans. Better than a fried system....

And do these REV or Serials numbers have any relavance on the noise issues -
like noise only on certain rev numbers or serial codes with a certain number .. ??

You said "almost". So there are displays with this noise in the US too?

Not everyone says where they are located and I haven't read every message ever posted, so I can't be sure that no one in North America ever had a hum problem. Someone in NA may have a uniquely busted monitor that hums or they may have "dog" ears.

But I wanted to point out that this is SIGNIFICANTLY different between NA and EU. The higher voltage or lower frequency on the transformer seems to cause hum. This is not new, I have read these reports as long as 2690s have shipped to Europe.

2490's didn't start humming all of a sudden, they started shipping Europe all of a sudden.

If you are sensitive to the Hum and you live in Europe any model you get will likely annoy you from what I have read. It migh vary by small degree, but this seems to be a problem with the design when plugged into Euro power sources.

i got a call from the store i place my order with -my 2490 is in the store now.
will collect it on monday

i have already asked them that i want to check the monitor "in Store" before i buy it to check for noise and dead pixels etc.. - they agreed to this..

so any advise on what to clearly look out for / check before i take it home..

It is harder to notice things in a short look in store. Likely they have higher ambient noise, so the hum will be harder to hear. Lighting is likely brighter so harder to spot any screen uniformity issues, or dead pixels.

Dead pixels are common on the 2490 (I have one) but if nothing else is wrong and the dead pixel doesn't stand out, I would ignore that, the next one could be worse. I almost never notice my dead pixel.

Thanks snowdog for your advise

i will take all those factors like ambient nosie and brightness into consideration

whats the way you would test to see dead pixels on screen -
i read that you need to check the R,G,B and white screen test

is there any thing else i need to be aware of when checking the monitor ?

do you know what those Rev numbers mean -anything there to watch out for ?

thanks

My 2490 makes a noise, but I have to press my ear to the chassis to hear it in my home ambient environment. If I had an ultra-quiet room and rig I might be able to hear it. rev 2D 2008.06

rev 2E 2008.11 firmware 1.08
rev 2F 2009.1 firmware 1.09
Neither hum, USA.

Maybe not at the moment. But maybe they fix it in the future and then it could be useful to know the revision of the fixed model(s).

Yeah the SV software on the PC shows this information

Thanks! (because in the OSD this can't be seen - not even in the advanced OSD)

So I guess if my replacement (noisy or not) will be a 2009 model then I have at least a new firmware :)

US here, and mine makes a quiet hum that seems to go away after the LCD is on for a while. I also am in a very low ambient noise environment though, so that might have something to do with why I can hear it.

Rev 2D, I can't find the production date, although this monitor was refurbished so it looks like they covered it up. *shrug*

Not complaining since all the other functional aspects are great; that and I don't feel like playing the warranty lottery to possibly get something with real, obvious problems. :p

just an update - i went to the store yesterday to check out the 2490 (Euro model)

there is a very slight nosie when you have your head 1cm from the top like a small fan kinda sound but its very very faint..

i tested the u.s spectraview II software with my i1 display2 and that also worked without any problems..

on this monitor i could find only a couple dead pixels in the remote corner parts and then they are very very small.

I guess in the store it wasn't that quiet. In my room (if it's quiet) I can hear the noise slightly up to 1 meter in front of the display.

I just got my new replacement model and it has the same noise.

But it has no dead pixels so I think I'll keep it and live with the noise.

As I have been indicating. The transformer design makes more noise on Euro power. I don't think there will be a silent one to be had.

Other than that you get into the subjective parts about what people find annoying.

Yeah, but it was worth a try.

I just wished each european customer would ask for a new replacement in the first two weeks. Just to let NEC now that it's not OK to sell such devices.

Europe, 240V, 2690 = HUM.
Got used to it a long time ago. I actually don't notice it anymore and I have a very sensitive hearing.
