Insane yes i know. Yes the system will be used. Intel Side will be mac w/ windows under bootcamp AMD side will be dual boot windows and linux.

Primary Applications: 3D Rendering, Live Audio Modifications, CAD and Drafting

Any Thoughts or Suggestions

um, you understand that you can't just install OS X on skulltrail because the board is similar to a mac pro? (Ok, so its not that similar, the Mac Pro is a custom high-end workstation Dual Processor Xeon board, and the Skulltrail board is not, its reference Intel server board design with an nVidia chip on it.)
And it wouldnt be with bootcamp anyway because bootcamp is only useful on Mac's due to the EFI. Bootcamp just mimics a normal BIOS for windows to see so it can install and run.

Cool idea anyway, though somewhat pointless to have two machines with Quad SLI and Crossfire X, unless two people are going to be gaming on 30" screens at the same time. That would be pretty cool.

Bit of a waste of money to be honest. For under $10k, you can get a 32 core AMD workstation with a 64gb RAM (or more?) and 2 x GTX295. Just buy a Tyan VX50 barebone instead...

hmm.. for 12 grand..

8*2TB WD SATA3.0 hdds ($2400)
2*nVidia GTX 295s ($1200)
16*4GB DDR2 Registered ECC ($1350)
4*AMD 8484 2.6GHz ($7900)
Tyan VX50 barebone ($3600-$4000)

total=$16450-$16850

Cut down on the ram, and hard drives, and you could easily get it down to around $13000, but if your spending >$10000 why not spend an extra couple thousand to max out the system? :D Heck, you could shave it down even further and almost cut half off of the processor price by going with the 8340s.

wow hackintosh+bootcamp, and linux, windows wow!! insane o_0
why not go dual intel octo-core?
guess you'd need a kvm switch as well heheheh

Not possible for a long time. 8 core chips will be released for quad socket boards first and even that won't be out this year.

opps....

i meant instead going intel/amd ... why not, as the above poster said, 2 intel skull trail octo-core units :)

Or better yet wait for the Quad Gainestown chips to come out, would prolly be due in a months or so :)
As the nehalem architecture + quick path is quite a huge leap from previous procs :)

Im wishing you're going to make a plog about this project. :)

Edit: yup reported to be out march 31. http://icrontic.com/news/gainestown-xeons-to-launch-on-march-31. Hopefully 8 cores would be out this year as well.
