What aniti-virus / blockers do you use?

Great feedback, you learn something new everyday.

The ONLY good AVs are Avira AntiVir (my #1) and NOD32 (my #1.1, but I NEVER recommend it for home use)

1.) why not for home use?

2.) why is this ESET so good? ...

3.) what about using linux (for example) to scan the MS OS partition. This even kernel level malware can be detected. Has anyone tried this.
Imagine: (Always happens) your family, relatives, friends come to you with a malware problem, pop in the bootable USB and let linux run the AV on the MS OS.

4.) do you guys have knowledge of firewall security? ... ACL's? ... decent hardware firewall, relatively cheap?

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP

I've got bit defender, but I hate it. It deleted all my keygens. :( But I guess it's doing it's job. It catches way more stuff then AVG Free did, idk if they are false positives or not. I don't question it, it auto-deletes them, I don't really have a say so in the matter.

Maybe you shouldn't be pirating software? A lot of keygens are going to pop up false positives, but you never know when they might, in fact be dropping all sorts of crap onto your computer.

Take that with a "wink wink, nudge nudge". Everyone pirates something. But he's right about lots of false positives. He's ALSO right about never knowing if the keygen is dropping all sorts of crap onto your machine. Try running your keygens in a virtual machine which you can just wipe and reimage :) I'm certainly not advocating piracy, people should get paid for their work, but sometimes it is a good way to try out a piece of software without restrictions.

Getting something unknown dropped onto your system is basically the price of admission when it comes to software piracy :D

Kind of like hookers! The idea sounds great on the surface, but in the end you just end up with warts on your junk.

1. I don't know why he wouldn't recommend NOD32 for home use

2. ESET is so good because it catches most virsues, has good heuristic scanning (so it catches new viruses well) and has very few false positives. Basically the tri-fecta of what makes a good A/V scanner.

3. Scanning an HD on a different OS, be it Windows or Linux is the only way to catch some of the nastier rootkits out there. But it's a hassle unless you have a workstation specifically setup to do so.

4. not sure.

so i was planning to get this for the new server. but from the comparison http://www.eset.com/purchase/
Smart security 4 is good right?

or should i just get the AV version from the egg for $24.99 ... deal going on.

quick question, can i also block programs from connecting to the internet?

Yes you can. Smart Security has a firewall built into the software where you can have it alert you everytime something tries to access the internet or you can have it set on automatic so that it's not constantly asking you permission.

dont put smart security on a server, why would you want a software firewall messing things up?

get ESET Nod32 Business and throw it on server, if you have multiple machine sin house just contact myself or yeolde and buy a license for how many machines and just protect em all and monitor from server.

Whats it cost for like 10 clients and 1 server?

Avast with VRDB off. I find it uses less resources that way, and if I ever get a virus on my system, it's instant reformat anyway.

My problems with Avira are:

1) It's adware.
2) Minimizes fullscreen apps to update.
3) Requires clicking to do so.
4) Overall just requires a lot more maintenance than Avast.

IMO not worth it over the better detection, especially since the only viruses that ever come anywhere near my system are old MS Word macro viruses from 2004 via my flash drive - and I use OpenOffice so I'm safe from that.

I just wish ClamWin had a resident module.

only reason is that i want specific programs not to even access internet. With hardware i can only limit ports. ... using of DD-WRT.

what is the difference between Business and Home?

1) How is it adware? Are you talking about the popup? If so, you can easily disable the sucker with a quick good search. Also, every anti-malware app I've used has never flagged any components of Avira as malware.

2) Never seen that happen

3) Clicking for what? Update? When do you have to click to update?

4) How so?

Would you all recommend a dedicated anti-spyware app if I were to go for Avira AntiVir free edition?

If so, which one?

I've been using AVG since it's an all-around complete package, but I'm trying to migrate to something a little more secure (not that I've had malware problems but... you can never be too safe). Seems like the better the heuristics, the fewer features in the free version.

im looking for antivirus to put on my file server using windows 2008...i guess my only options are business suited software

what is the difference between Business and Home?

Home edition will only support from Esets public update servers....and cannot be a managed client.

Business Edition allows you to configure your update server source...you'd add your own MIRROR update servers address..the main antivirus management server that runs your RAS/RAC. Also there's a tab to allow you to set clients to report into this management server.

Spybot Search and Destroy...no teamtimer, keep it updated, and each time you update.reimmunize. Zero performance hit. Decent browser protection and cleaning.

SpywareBlaster...keep it updated, Zero performance hit. Not a removal tool, just protects your browser...both IE and Firefox.

MalwareBytes...a good cleaner/removal tool.

gf downloaded wow addons last night , just today before work when she typed in google, all her words were typing backwards. when you tried to move a window it would gilde to the left automatically.

quickly unplugged internet cable. tried to delete the addon folder and zips, would not let me.

booted into safemode with networking. deleted the addons folder, emptied trash bin. updated my maleware bytes and antivir...did a scan..did not find anything.

i use to have avast on her pc. i think that would have found the virus/spyware before it got infected

i am going to reformat anyway but would like to have a antivirus that scans downloads when they finish downloading to minimize the threat.

what do you think?

Sounds more like a KB/mouse driver glitch to me. If AntiVir and MalwareBytes came up squeeky clean, I highly doubt a product with lower detection rates would find much.

Recently I've gotten back into using FreeAVG on stuff at home. Not so annoying when you boot up the pc as it use to be. MalwareBytes is also my favorite too as it saved our hinds when a entire clients network was taken over by a piece of spyware.

At work we use Symantec 10.2 - 11. Also a mix of adaware, malwarebytes, and spybot.

I know for a fact that there was a known issue with Java and Firefox that would sometimes cause the backwards typing error, however the newest Java fixed those issues. I'm not sure if it could also cause the gliding thing.

thing that scared me, was not being able to mty the recycle bin. first thought was virus

wow addons are notorious for key loggers and viruses, pisses me off

Yeah that definitely seems beyond the normal Java bugs.

If it was caused by a WoW addon or WoW-related site, I would suggest changing your GF's account's password ASAP on a machine you know is clean. The vast majority of WoW malware is specifically aimed at hijacking accounts.

Can anyone tell me how Trend Micro OfficeScan is doing now? I've been trying to read up on Anti-Virus software for a Corporate environment and I'm having a hard time finding really good comparisons between different software. We are using OfficeScan now and I would like to continue using it unless there are major benefits to moving elsewhere. thanks!!!

that was done, 5 secs after i saw the window glide across the screen, heh MC hammer esk.

its reformat time !!!

My office at work: Avast (I hate Sophos - computers get infected with that thing) and most others use Avira Free.

Other offices/servers at work: Sophos

Home: Bitdefender

Almost all computers have Windows Defender or Spybot S&D, too.
