Just purchased a new Unibody MacBook Pro and the investment cost more than $2000. It is the 2.4GHz base model. For the price, I could have got a Intel Core i7 setup but it would be a PC, hah. Is it a good buy? I am hardly portable but I may need to be in the future. And I do play Left for Dead via BootCamp with Windows 7. That rocks but its got a glossy mirror screen which can get annoying but its very vibrant. I wish it did have matte though.

Your thoughts?

im personally waiting for the i7's to hit the macbook and for snow leopard.
takes a lot of restraint tho =[

lol good luck waiting till end of 2009
why wait when you can get one now, thats dumb

I just bought a new 2.4GHz Unibody MacBook Pro for $1650. It's my third MBP and the best one yet. I popped in a 4GB RAM upgrade and this baby rocks! :D

Are you basically looking for some anonymous people on the internet make you feel better about you spending money on an Apple laptop?

Congrats, your $2000 investment bought you the uniqueness your looking for.. just like everyone else who owns one. :D

But seriously.. No need to get others opinions on this.. if you like it.. others opinions shouldn't matter.

Base model Unibody MBP, upgraded to 4GB RAM, and 7200RPM 320GB HDD.

Love mine, very solid, amazingly built machine, haven't had to take it in for anything, where as my MacBook (Black Late 2006 model) was just a magnet for every problem those machines were ever known to have.

for $1650?! where

eBay... It was brand new and sealed. I really liked my early 2008 MBP, but the aluminum unibody is a big step up in quality from the previous design. I also bought a 3 year Applecare warranty ($350 from Apple) for just $170. ;)

I love the new Macbook Pro lineup, but I have a odd complaint. When using the trackpad i like to rest my wrists in such a way that the notebook REALLY digs into my palms. It hurts :p

Weird I know but true.

i7 on a MacBook? You'll be waiting a while. Hard to see the i7 even making its way to the Pro anytime soon, even if Calpella hadn't been delayed to Q3.

Back on topic, I love my plain old aluminum MacBook. Perfect size and battery life. I just wish the keys were metal as well, or at least something that isn't plastic. The smudge marks show up very easily after continued use. It looks horrible. I do wish the MacBook line had the same quality displays as the Pro line, however.

they both have garbage TN panels (though the MBP's is a bit better(, but every laptop does it seems anyway.

I agree on the plastic keys. It kinda kills the high-end feel of the notebook.

I got mine right after it was released. I waited because I knew it was coming, so I wouldn't kick myself for buying an outdated laptop.

It's my first mac and I absolutely love it!

I realize they both use TN panels. Everything uses TN panels these days. When I say quality, I'm referring primarily to contrast ratio. The MB is 150:1, the MBP is 500:1, therefore the MBP has a higher quality display than the MB. Viewing angles on the MB are poor as well.

A BIT better? Are you kidding me? The Macbook Pros have TN panels, yes, but they're about as good as TN panels get. The non-Pro Macbook displays are downright rubbish. The difference between them is staggering.

No, not everything. Pretty much all laptops do, but it's still quite easy to find non-TN stationary displays.

The LCD quality between the MBP and MB is astonishing. The MBP screens are actually one of the reasons I went with them instead of the MacBook which has the crappiest laptop screen I have ever seen.

My statement was pretty obviously an exaggeration for effect, BMR. I realize one can find desktop displays that do not use TN.

To me, it's a bit better. There's still these annoying color-shifts with the Macbook Pro that annoy me. There's still the fact it looks no where near as good as IPS panels. For me, that means it's shit, and so is the macbook's panel. Sure, the Macbook Pro screen isn't as shitty, but it's still shit. Shit is shit. That is why I don't care about the display of my laptop much. They all have shit screens, and that's why I'd never use a laptop as my main computer.

My Asus V6Va has an IPS screen. It looks no better/no worse than my MacBook Pro's screen.

That means any one of the following:

1. It's the worst IPS panel ever made.
2. You don't know what to look for.
3. You're mistaken about the specs.

Sure, the Macbook Pro screen isn't as shitty, but it's still shit. Shit is shit.
Yes, of course, but there's a difference between unusable shitty à la the Macbook, and just regular shitty, à la the Pro version.

I have the last gen non-unibody MBP (sig) and I love it. I use it more than my desktop (also sig) anymore. Since my monitor has USB out, I have everything go through that plus a USB sound for the MBP to go to my receiver. Makes switching between the two pretty painless. One USB cable, power cable, and VGA (desktop is on DVI). That hooks up everything. And as a plus the monitor then acts more or less like a KVM.

I got the glossy and I love it. I think a lot of that has to do with height. I am 5'9, so not that tall. I notice that if some of my taller friends use it they tilt it way back and get a lot of reflection. I get pretty much none even at work with tons of little LEDs around me and massive ceiling lights. The LEDs of other hardware is blocked by well... me and the other lights aren't an issue since it is pointed at me. Personal preference in the end. Even if some people try to argue otherwise.

I've never seen an IPS panel that wasn't leagues better than the Macbook Pro panel. It's a pretty fair assumption, then, that it is an unusually bad IPS panel. The Macbook Pro's cannot compare with the Dell UltraSharp IPS panels, or the Cinema Displays, or any other IPS panel I have used.

I've gotta say....compared to the older Macbook Pro and Macbook Air (in terms of build quality), this is 100x better. Everything on the laptop comes apart easy, including the display glass. So at least you know if you ever have to replace something, the parts will likely be on ebay.

Finished a 24kt gold unibody already, working on some red and green anodized mbps now. Was going to do a hand engraved chassis for myself this month but after careful consideration of the economy and my saving account, I had to say no.

what is 100x better macbook pro or macbook
u guys getting used to its trackpad hah

My prob with my MBP is they still haven't fixed the "black screen of death". If I leave it on (as I always do...) for a few hours in "Performance" video mode (aka 9600m activated) and have the lid closed? I fire up my external monitor to see black nothingness. It's on... It thinks everything's fine. I hit the vol button on my wireless keyboard and hear the sound of the volume going up and down. I tap the power button, press right once and hit enter, and it'll even shut down normally. I just can't see anything. Solution?

Keeping the lid open, and the MBP's display activated. Tell me they can't fix this prob with a driver. And yet, here I am, months and months later.

I don't know if that's something that happens on every MBP, but I would argue that your unit is faulty and it should be replaced. It is not fit for purpose.

That's supposedly a logic board problem and should be covered under warranty. My boss's does that, mine does not. Bought at the same time (older 17' Macbook Pro)

These informations are of use to me. Looks like I should get me a slot at the local Genius Bar. Thanks.

If a computer fails to do something you should reasonably be able to expect it to do, it is faulty. Unless of course the specifications mentioned that it couldn't do that particular thing, which is obviously not the case here.

i enjoy my MBP, the glossy screen looks nice, most certainly better than my Samsung 226 BW for my desktop. It's fast, runs all of my applications well, works well with final cut. I like the track pad, never had a problem with it. You'll get used to it quickly, i'd recommend one if they weren't so expensive, I feel like for the price I could of gotten much more.

My fujitsu uses a IPS panel IIRC. Viewing angles are tremendous as is the coloring. I've compared it to my friends mb pro and it destroys it in image quality.

Your fujitsu is a tablet and the the mbp surpasses it in terms of build quality and operating system

What? The MBP doesn't surpass it in build quality. It has a magnesium allow frame, a 10 hour battery life (yes 10 hours), and lets not forget, it's a tablet. OS is subjective, lets not start a flamewar because of your preference.

Okay... he was just talking about the quality of the image. I'm not sure why you had to bash the tablet pc.

what do you guys think of the possibility of replacing my macbook pro which is a primary computer with a less expensive high end htpc? it will replace my ps3 as well

My response is, why replace the MBP and PS3 in the first place? Build the HTPC if you want, but keep the MBP and PS3.

I personally like my old 08 non-unibody model more than the new one. Also the 9600m GT is a tad bit slower than the old 8600m GT. I'm going to wait till next year hopefully they will change the design or upgrade the damn thing. Not much change to warrant another 3k spent for me.
