Ok, so I'm at home for a bit from uni and am using my brother's PC... and somehow his rig seems more enjoyable to use than mine. Gaming seems somehow more pleasant. We have exactly the same monitors, the same sound systems, and we both have good quality mouse/keyboards/mousepads. I thought maybe it was the specs - his are a bit better. Then I thought maybe it was the room - but his room is much messier than mine and that should make gaming less pleasant.

But then it struck me - his chair is better than mine!

I have a poorly made wooden chair with dodgy joints that wobbles a bit and collapsed once. My landlord is cheap. My brother, meanwhile, has a nice padded office-style chair with a tall back consisting of this mesh stuff as well as armrests. It makes a world of difference.

This made me think - what chairs do the [H] gamers use that they are particularly fond of? Does any model/brand/type of chair stand out as being especially conducive to gaming nirvana? Were the console folks right all along, that the couch is the ultimate platform with which to support the body of a gamer?

I have this one. I got it when SHarper Image was liquidating on the cheap... it's very comfortable for me (6 feet 220 lbs) and is fairly sturdy, but I don't try and break it or anything... I think the main thing I like about it is it's full back and head rest so I can game or STFW in a fully reclined position if I want to... reclined and well positioned to still use the mouse and kb... the speakers are ok, but I rarely use them...

Leather executive chairs like this

Make sure to get one a few price notches up from the cheapest, in the UK this sort of thing start at about £50-60 but if you aim for the £80-90 price you'll get yourself a comfy chair which will last a long time.

I love the tilt on mine for watching TV and movies at my computer, tilt back, get your bevy out, and get your feet up on the bass speaker :D

This is very true and when you think about it, $100-150 isn't really all that much to spend on a nice chair that will last for years, considering how much time you spend sitting in it.

Hehe great post op, I wondered where you were going with it.
I agree seating makes a huge difference.
This is why I use a sofa with feather filled cushions so I can sit really comfortably in whatever position I want.
Highly recommended, especially if you can use an HDTV for your PC.

Your mouse choice and the sofa material may limit the experience though.
ie creased leather is hard to track, anything flat is much easier to track.
I'm using the Razer Deathadder on cloth seat cushions and it is ace.

A nice leather office chair goes a long way but make sure you adjust the height correctly and setup your desk decently.I hate the setup I use at work because the desk is too high and the monitor too low so if I raise my chair enough to cancel out the high desk I'm looking down at the monitor :( .

find a recliner/living room style chair that you like.

now put it in front of your computer.

enjoy.

Raise the monitor, or complain that the working conditions aren't very ergonomic if that is what your job requires.

I have this at home just because my desk doesn't have a keyboard tray, so my desk has to be nearly at lap-level for me to type comfortably for hours.

Instead of looking down at my monitors, I have them stacked on books. Big books. Looks a little ghetto, but it works.

Since your issue is at work, you should bitch to your boss about it. Poor ergonomics is a health hazard if computer use is a big part of your job. Any boss who isn't a total retard will fix it.

I thought you were supposed to have the top of the monitor at eye level. At least that's what Kodak's health and safety people said when they were sent round to the company I used to work at. But then, they also complained a lot of the desks weren't high enough for the taller people and tried to arrange a specially adapted office, but all the tall people refused to sit in the "giants' room" :)
Personally I can't stand monitors that are above eye-level, but that's just me.

Thats how I have my TV and monitor, eye level is at the very top of the actual picture and its most comfortable.

I actually wouldn't mind some kind of rig that had a comfy chair with full back/headrest support that was tilted to be more of a relaxed leaned back position so you could fully relax all your muscles, then have your screen mounted slightly higher above you pointed downwards and have mouse/keyboard support in sensible places...

Kind of a cross beween gaming and bed, that would be awesome, my 2 fave things, my computer and sleep :)

I would just like a decent leather chair whose leather doesn't start to rip about 6 months after I buy it. Always near the seams or creases, and it begins and doesn't stop. 2-3 years and it's garbage. Is there such a thing as a durable leather office chair?

Not to derail the OP's topic, but I am noticing my most overlooked PC gaming accessory is my mouse pad. I am using a free pad I got from my ISP when they came and installed my connection. I am starting to get some pretty intense wrist pains after gaming sessions and I am starting to look for a nice pad with good support.

Good mousepads. You never realize your true fps potential untill you use the best of the best.

Leather Lazyboy recliner off of craigslist for $50.

They are out there, I bought two at that price from two different people.

In college I worked at pizza hut, and I worked in the store where all the managers had monthly meetings, so the managers decided to all pitch in and buy really nice office chairs(200+) for their meetings, our store closed and I worked more hours than anyone=I got a really nice office chair for free that sits in my room now 3 years later, really does add to the experience. One other big part of chairs i found is those floor mats that go under the chair so the chair move faster and doesn't kill your floor.

Why is it better to watch up on the monitor rather than down? Better for the neck?
