I played oblivion for awhile after release, and then something happened that really turned me off the game.

When it became clear that you needed to close all of the gates and that that was going to take awhile, i completely lost interest. It almost seemed like the bread and butter of the game was essentially the same quest over and over again, and it completely killed the experience for me. It has bugged me for the last few years because everyone seemed to enjoy it so much, and I began to think that I had missed some essential element of the game rather than it being poor quest trajectory.

Can anyone speak to this?

I actually don't recall having to close any of the Oblivion gates except for the one at Kvatch (and obviously the Big One near Bruma).

Here's the UESP article on 'em. Should tell you what you need to know.

You can blast through the main quest in three or four hours if you were determined, I guess. Surprisingly, you can beat it at level one, so you don't necessarily need to be at any given level to run through it.

I put over a hundred ours into the game before doing the main quest, I tried to explore all the location, I believe I found most of them. The main quest took about 20 hours to complete, not rushing it. I think that it was a good game, for its time, nowdays , mods make it better , though I couldnt see myself completing again from scratch. I think you should play it for the ending , I thought that it was pretty cool, atleast complete the game for that.

I never completed the main quest, but put a lot of time into it. Had fun with the side missions. You don't need to close every gate, only the ones that the questline takes you to.

Put in about 55 hours before I closed my first gate and never really carried on past that, It was getting a bit silly as I had maxed my character as a stealth/thief character strong with the bow and max stats for bow strength but it was taking a lot of arrows to kill the enemies. I would have completed this game if it wasn't for the whole creature leveling with you system.

The mods are nice but I can't bring myself to install mods which significantly alter the game story or main quest no matter how bad it is, It irks me playing something modified like that, the graphical updates and HUD updates etc are great though.

Yeah I think only a handful, 2 or 3, are actually required for the main quest. You do get a quest that requires you to close a gate at every city, but you don't have to do it, it just makes a later main quest easier because you get soldiers from each city to help you.

hmm.. i guess i just misunderstood. I think i got a little burnt out on side quests too. I know some people love the sandbox play, but im only really interesting in that in mmos.

I had to play with a lot of mods to get good playtime out of it. Same reasons as Frostex, the scaling enemies. Crap. Get rid of that, maybe get a new character model with some tasty boobies, it's all gravy.
