Long-range combat shooters?

I've been playing Crysis and STALKER, and have been really getting into the whole open-range feel of the games. I was wondering if there are any more games out there (with at least decent graphics) that are worth checking out?

I'm looking for something like Battlefield2 but without all the spammy vehicle combat - more focused on infantry.

So far, I've got my eye on Red Orchestra. Sure, it's not made up of huge maps, but the maps do give you ample room to maneuver around the enemy and set up for long-distance kills. Basically, the game relying more on position and thinking instead of mostly reflexes.

Any ideas? Perhaps there is a mod out there for BF2 that emphasizes more on infantry?

try the Mod called Project Reality...very nice mod if your looking for realism(as much as can be had for BF2)
and it is based more on Infantry combat..

also..another one to try..Arma?

I've tried Arma in the past and to be honest, it was realistic to the point of being... annoying. It was a great game for what it set out to accomplish, but the controls felt awkward for some reason and I just could not get used to the graphics (I'm spoiled).

I will check out the BF2 mod. Thanks!

So I've played a bit of Project Reality for BF2 and have got to say that it is much more enjoyable than BF2 vanilla. I did find some annoyances in it, though, which were mainly due to the devs shoving realism down your throat and up your ass at the same time without realizing that some elements should stay in the game, especially in a pub (an always-on minimap for example).

Having said that, I can see myself playing this mod for quite a while, but there are so few populated servers that I've rarely been given the chance to play.

Any more games you guys can think of? OFP2 and ArmA2 aren't that far off on the calendar right?

Ghost recon advanced warfighter2 for the pc, completely different than 360, got it free with a processor, and was reall surprised by how good it is and how overlooked it is. Great if you love sneaking and sniping.

Operation Flashpoint and Amra Assault which is sequel of sorts, I think theres an Operation Flashpoint 2 in the works which will no doubt be fantastic.

Red orchestra would be an excellent choice.

Some of the maps are pretty big especially some custom tank maps, although maybe not what you are after.

Also some maps prevent you from getting too far round the enemy to stop people camping spawn locations.

Project IGI if I remember correctly. It was built on a flight simulator engine and you could in theory go walking 20 miles into nowhere if you so chose.

That was blown out of proportion. There were some opportunities to snipe etc, but the "huge maps" thing wasn't very true.

get operation flashpoint or ARMA.

Sniper Elite.
Its a bit dated graphics wise but once you get into it, that doesnt matter.
Great sniping game and should be really cheap now.

its pretty old.. but Shogo was a great game for open spaces. It was a cool combo of half mech FPS/half infantry FPS. fun game but yes.. it does make me feel old to mention it.

I don't think so. It's a great mod, but it's still reliant mostly on reflexes and isn't such a wide-open sort of thing like he wants.

Actually insurgency has very wide open maps, maybe not rpg size, but to say that he wont like this game but other modern combat shooters is ridiculous. Its a semi realistic but not so much it makes it unfun. (well maybe sometimes but its rare). And theres maps that are indeed very large, some in which u can barely see half way across t he map thru the sniper optics before ur vision goes out and view distance dies down.

Most FPS are reliant on reflexes, if you want something that isn't go play WoW.

Sure, FPS's require good reflexes, but the TS was looking for something tactical. Meaning you need to use things other than just reflexes.

!♥?☺ Not seeing a sufficiency of non-alphanumeric characters in posts ?♣♦

Ghost recon advanced warfighter2

I'll second that. Much more user friendly then GRAW1 and lots of sniping oportunities. It is really not an "open area" game like Stalker or Fallout3 (allows for plenty of sniping also, but the ammo is scarce), but most maps are big enough to give you some choices with your shots.

then he needs to play ARMA or Operation Flashpoint. Those games are brutal and really make sure think smart about what you do or you will die really fast. Best way to put it is you need to think like a real soldier to play well.

Games don't get much more tactical that these two. I don't even consider them FPS games but more of a war simulator.

Flashpoint is certainly outdated in the graphics department but still give a very solid gaming experience. It offers a lot of gameplay throughout 3 campaigns (US, Russians, Resistance) Resistance even goes as far as needing some resource gathering so that you have a stock pile of weapons and what not.

Unfortunetly I never finished ARMA, it didn't feel the same as flashpoint, the solo soldier experience in the first few levels just didn't work for me.

+1, underrated

ARMA is probably the most recent one that comes to my mind. I just picked it up recently and I love it. Its not really that difficult.

Ghost Recon 1 was great for sniping as well.

Personally I think ArmA is horrible and would encourage you to try the demo before buying it. I just think the control and feel of the game if very bad and it's not very fun to play. Project Reality for BF2 is pretty good, but isn't perfect.

I'm also interested in this kind of game, and haven't found anything to replace BF2 and some mods for it yet:confused: I was playing the Insurgency mod for HL2 which is all infantry but I think it's a POS too lol
