I'm considering getting the Collectors edition for $20 on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ special but I want to know if, in its current state, is actually good. I didn't like WoW so I don't know if I'll like this.

So, how is it?

Bought AoC when it came out. Tried to like it, but they basically patched it to death. Meaning every patch broke something and never actually fixed any problems. The UI was absolute crap too.

On the plus side, the game looked great! And the combat was different enough from the basic WoW auto attack that you actually had to pay attention during combat. Also the ability to make a castle was fun!

On the minus side, zones (way to ruin the immersion). PvP was absolutely broken and was made worse and worse as the game went on. The equipment was garbage, no real point to upgrading anything as it never made much of a difference. Crafting sucked hardcore as well.

Anyway, the server populations are way down, so don't expect a lot of people to be playing.

AoC was the awkward child...

I bought it on release and played for 2 months as an assassin, the game was pretty buggy and they had a patch system that didn't have testing servers for a long time. The result of this is that as they attempted to patch out bugs they introduced more and more and it just got worse.

Several of the game dynamics were massively broken, their idea of elite fighters in dungeons and alike were stupid they messed around with difficulty scaling between these monsters and players who were much higher level, in order to keep it a challenge at any level, it ended up just being stupid and broken.

My specific class, the assassin was massively broken, female characters had broken animation speeds which broke the dps output of this dps class, they were being told about this issue several months before the release and only admitied it existed several months after release at which point they said it would be at least several weeks before it would be fixed.

At that point I quit, the assassin was in big trouble and I was 80 and not willing to re-roll, the game had quite a lot of nice features and the combat was refreshing, but essentiall no end game features other than PvP and farming for guild mats.

It from what 40 servers to 6? That should tell you something right there.

Funcom took a great franchise and destroyed it in a way I never thought possible. Great graphics, great ideas, horrible management, and even worse implementation.

I played a Necro to about level 46.

The class changes in the game were so drastic from patch to patch that you had to re-learn how to play your class every week it seemed.

At first I liked the game and my necro, i could destroy most things. Then the patch's just wore it down and killed the game for me.

Each week my spells/minions had different abilities. Thats just jacked up

My story is the same...
*sigh*

Yeah i had that game but it really isnt worth it i guess it failed because i havent seen it around

NO it is a piece of shit. Imagine if you had a record store and everyone wanted you to carry more Led Zeppelin. THen, since the demand was so high for Zeppelin, you decided to stock the entire store with ABBA. Your customers would be pretty pissed.

Same thing with AoC. People kept begging for changes and they implemented, on several occasions, the exact opposite of what the population wanted.

Im sure you get the picture, i have a 50 dollar coaster that is so abominable that I wont even set a drink on it.

Why should that tell him something? The reality is that the masses usually have poor taste in games not good taste... at least in my opinion, anyway.

if you live in Florida i'll sell you my AoC for 10 bucks.

hell you can buy my fiancee's copy and mine for 15 bucks.

I never got past the grind fest that started in the mid 40's and continued to max level. If I remember correctly, I got my barbarian to level 56 or so before giving up on the game. At that point, most of my friends that were playing had already quit anyway, so there was no point in staying around for me. I don't know if this has changed, but at the time, there was extremely little content to do after you hit level 40. By the time you hit 50, you had to grind at least 1/2 of every level due to lack of quests. AoC had some serious potential, but it could have used a few more months in beta to iron things out and add more content to the late game.

Pros:
Gorgeous environments
Pretty innovative combat system
Building a guild city was pretty awesome

Cons:
More bugs than you can count....every patch introduced 2 bugs for every bug they fixed
Combat system- yes, I listed it as a pro (it was a neat idea), pvp wise the system was lacking. People could just run away from your combos, and you couldn't do anything about it until the animation was over. Also, some classes could "charge" their combos by pressing all the buttons except the last one, run straight at an opponent, and one shot them.
Zones- after playing WoW for so long, having a non-seamless world killed the immersion for me (and a lot of others)
Crafting- very bad implementation at the time I played
Gathering- farming for hours trying to get the rare material to drop so you can advance to the next tier sucked
,,,,,I could go on and on with this cons list, so I'm just going to stop now.

If I were you, I'd stay away from AoC and save your money. Like someone else mentioned, going from 30 servers to 6 really tells you something about the state of the game at the moment.

I bought AoC when it came out, enjoyed the graphics, the first 30 levels, the music, the fighting, renewed for 3 more months after the trial month. I didn't renew thereafter.

What I didn't enjoy:

The world as an instance, the uninspired gear, that everyone had the ability to hide (a major weak point especially in PvP), bugs, not meeting Conan the King, DirectX 10 never implemented.

How is it now, don't know, I do have AoC still installed on my system, I am awaiting one of those emails from FunCom that says come back to us here is a free month trial to see the changes!

Heh, you do get to meet King Conan in the game :p.

Well...
Most of those comments are probably from people who haven't tried the game since june...

They changed the game director and I'd say the game is going in the right direction now.

I stopped playing in July cuz they we're just screwing the game up bad...

Came back a month ago, to give it a 2nd try cuz honestly, they did the same thing with Anarchy Online and after they fixed the bug and the lag it was one of the best MMO out there (and it still is imo).

So basicly... the first 20 lvls are probably the best 20 lvl you'll spend in a MMO... it's very well done ... the game looks gorgeous ... it's just beautifull and other than Crysis I don't think any game looks as good plus the DX10 will make it even better (it's on testlive soon to be released).

They fixed most classes, only DT is still a bit underpowered but that's mostly in PvP.
There's still some weird things, especially the PvP portion but I'd say the game looks like what it should have looked like when it was released... I suggest people give it a 2nd try, it's worth it plyus if you already have the game it's what, 15$ ?

Try it heck, lvl 2-3 char to 20 it doesn't take that long and that alone would be worth the 30$ you'll pay for the game.

Hmm... someone else told me the same thing about the first 20 levels.

What magically happens at lvl 21 that removes the... magic... from the game?

I've been thinking about demo'ing the game. I don't want to have to purchase a game to try it out for a month or less. If I could pay for just that month, then maybe.

it was great but now sucks, they killed it.

You're obviously not playing any more.

It sucked, but now is great. A lot of people are giving it the thumbs down from experience with the initial release, which is fair enough and I would too. However, I resubscribed recently and they've been kicking backsides and getting things into gear. Really enjoying it. No bugs in the 40 levels since I restarted, none on my main, the only complaint would be the new abuse of the new PvP system whereby lower levels can gank higher levels without fear; but this seems to have been sneakily addressed, as the last ten or so times someone more than five levels below me has tried to be a cleverdick I've been able to slap them down without getting a criminal rating, so it seems they've addressed this without officially claiming so.

I'm not reading any comments by people playing at the moment. The question was "is it good", not "was it good". I'd say yes to the former, but agree with the majority and say no, it was not good when it came out. It is good as it stands now.

Please do not spend a single dime on it. Its a boring ass game especially at the later levels. I seriously doubt the game will be around for another 2-3 years.

I've just had a very enjoyable two hours on it. If you want a boring game, try WoW - and don't you dare give me that "wawawah end game" spiel, if it's such a chore to get to "the real game" I'm not fucking interested.

I played beta... honestly, even the pros that some people list ("innovative" combat system") was a joke. I'm not a big fan of how mmo's currently work, I think a more fun combat system is needed... but AoC's combat system wasn't innovative. Sure, you had to pay attention a bit more than auto-attacking, but that doesn't automatically make it fun.

I wouldn't play the game for free, let alone buy the disc AND pay a subscription fee.

womwomwomwomwomwomwomwom

Not sure what "womwomwom" means but I played it from the end of Alpha all the way up to release. The combat system was never that fun... even though it might have been innovative. I watched a friend playing it after release, it didn't change significantly FOR the release.

If they changed it after, well, more power to them. I have little interest in paying a company for fixing things AFTER they release a broken, unoriginal and boring game.

I agree with Wally and other current AOC players give the game a chance. Its improved drastically since launch. I agree it had some pretry horrible issues at launch. I also admit there are still issues now but the huge things like stability etc. are fixed. No MMO has been perfect at launch not even WOW heck I would say Warhammer Online is in more danger of failure than AOC.

I love the people that drop into a thread about a game they dont play anymore to complain about things that happend months prior and have already been patched and dealt and they act like these things were completely unfixable and nothing has been done since launch. If you dont play anymore why do you care?

For anyone else out there the game is finally launch worthy and its sad that it wasnt in that shape when it did actually launch... Its sad thats the way MMO's are and always have been.... If you cant take a buggy MMO launch then dont play for 6mths or at bare minimum till reports of issues start filtering in so you can deal with whats happening.

I think you'll find people that "care" when they use time and money on something that sucks. Just like if you buy a car that is advertised as one thing, and then dies two weeks off the lot.

For what it's worth, not all MMO's are buggy on release. WOW was actually quite polished on initial release. WOTLK's release on the other hand, totally shitty. Better than AoC's, but pretty shitty relatively speaking.

Starts out single-player with full voice acting and a storyline. At 20 it shifts to a multiplayer focus, losing some if not all the "character" of the first levels. Least that's what I've been told.

Actually, I think it was good that we actually chimed in, if we didn't than probably no one would have given a current opinion of the AoC. It would have been to page 3 or worse on the board.

You always need to know the history of the baggage whether it's good or bad. If it was not for the complainers, Funcom wouldn't have to fix the complaints. The OP can now say will these were the faults and it looks like Funcom is willing to fix these maybe I should try out the game because of their commitment.

Good point, Tron. Furthermore, past performance is an indicator of the future. When Valve releases a game, I can bank on the fact that it is 100% done. AoC... (and hence the developers?) not so much...

Do you know how many subscribers WoW currently has? Do you also know how fucked-up broke it was on release? It's fair if that's your approach, but you can miss out on some good stuff if you don't give it a try.

Apparently not...

I had it when it first came out and played it for 2 months. The game was good and I thought the combat system was cool too. I stopped playing due to lack of time and also that I like to switch around between MMORPGs. Currently I don't know how the game is but like I said, it was good when I played it.
