DC Vault

Okay, then here's the silver lining - per DC Vault rules, once a project like this goes dead, won't they look into removing and replacing it? If they do, everyone with points in it will lose those, and we'll move up by default... :D

proteins@Home - dead now for months
SIMAP - new work every few months, only lasts a week or two
Malariacontrol - no work, needs invitation

meanwhile a project like GPUGRID with regular work and a responsive staff can't even get a sniff of the vault because it's too "immature," or "whaaaa I have to buy a GPU to play." That's why the Vault is ours to take, the other teams just aren't [H]ard enough.

For everyone into wiki's, there's a DC Wiki here. I set up an account and will look into adding some [H]ard content tomorrow.

It could be a good place for us to brain dump and keep track of everything.

The DC wiki looks interesting. I just looked at the Folding section of it, and it looks a bit outdated. No mention is made of GPU2 really.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the items I listed in my earlier post about our goals and framework as the DC Commandos?

Up to #43

I also now have more pending points in 2 projects than I have total points. (both well over 1k)

There's enough FAH info on the web, here, stanford, other teams forums, etc. Everything we've learned thus far is all in this thread, but its 33 pages and getting harder and harder to parse. The wiki is already off to a decent start, thats why I suggested getting involved in it, for us and as a gesture to the community.

My thoughts on Commando's guidelines is to just do our thing and stay out of the way until we see more acceptance of all things non-FAH and non-WCG. The best thing we can do to is be supportive of the FAH and WCG efforts and show we're not a threat to that.

the big competition gpugrid has is F@H.. i tried gpugrid once and to be honest id rather use F@H's gpu client again before i ever use gpugrid.. i dont blame gpugrid, i blame the imaturity of boinc when it comes to gpu support.. im just not willing to give up a cpu core to run a gpugrid project while its also using my gpu..

The latest boinc client has some fixes for that, see here, and GPUGRID has also done some work in this regard, see here. I seem to have the 6.62 version of the GPUGRID app, so I'll look closer at what its using for CPU.

Edit: I can't grab a GPUGRID unit right now, but the GPU-Seti unit is using about 3% of one core, occasionally spiking to ~10%.

I've downgraded my Boinc client to 6.60 since I have troubles with 6.62 and 6.63 grabbing GPUGRID work and grabbing to much Cuda Seti work.

I agree with that 100%

Really? What if Martin Luther King had said that? I agree it could be easy to kind of draw lines in the sand in the DC sub forum (and that's not what we want) but I'm not sure the total hands off approach is needed.

I' m not saying that we need to actively recruit other members of the Horde but I dont think a thread with a few objectives, project listings, gained knowledge, tips, trick, install guide, etc would be stepping on anyone elses toes here. In fact I think that you will find most Commandos are active in F@H or WCG or both. I think we need a post that has an overview of what we have been doing for the last month or two and welcome (but not pressure) anyone who wants to join us. A thread that's not #33 pages long. :D

@wheresatom - Those objectives look good to me. I actually like the one about the CC. Im planning on dropping everything and starting about 6 graphics cards for the challenge. :) What would you think about making #4 a little more of a generic statement to include the CC as well as other challenges (like WCG team challenges) or even Commando group efforts on a single project?

i think a 33 page long thread is welcoming enough.. lol :p i love this thread..

I'm not advocating a total hands off approach, but I've also been around these parts long enough to remember some.... uh... things.

Let's just say WCG eventually gained acceptance, and so can DC-Vault cracking.

Yeah I hear you. I've seen some "things" around here as well. I'm certainly not recommending we do anything too bold but just a nice summary thread for new commandos and a few guidelines we strive to achieve wouldnt cause too many problems I wouldnt think. Anyway I generally try to not get political around the DC forum. Thats not why we are here I guess. ;) Just my .02.

Crunch on Commandos! On to the Top 40!

I think that was a very healthy discussion everyone.
Nice to see everyone finding common ground.
You guys make me proud to be a commando.

On that note, I think expanding the project listing thread to include a brief explanation on what each project is and perhaps a link or two to a quick howto on getting started would be a good start there. Just indexing everything would help, this thread is 33 pages long and full of stuff, and then we also have the project listing thread, the BOINC client update thread, and probably a few other things relevant that I didn't think of off the top of my head.

It would probably be helpful to at least distinguish between BOINC projects and custom client projects, which projects are available for which OS, and minimum hardware requirements (and/or avg time to complete a WU).

Welcome HavocStyles to DistrRTgen. I'm about to crack the top 100 and with some help, the Horde is going to make some noise now.

i totally agree with you on that.. i may work on one tomorrow if need be.. probably going to fall asleep earlier then normal tonight..

41!!

We should break into the top 30 this weekend I would think.

Well, still nothing from HavocStyles, but some numbers on the board now from Tobit and we're up to 96. Which isn't at all bad for a project that I've just dabbled in for less than a month. :D

Beat me to it

This whole pending points thing...... I think there are a couple projects that I'm doing work faster than they can credit me with it.

My points are going up, but not as fast as my pending points.:(

I already had my pending points rant a few pages back. And I still don't have any Lattice Project points a week later.

I know I'll be putting a big move on the Vault either the next update or the one after.
We will just have to wait and see how big.

Today's turning out to be a great day. :D
I think I can stuff 500 points in the vault today, would be more but a registration server is down on another project I was going to pick on today at the same time.

Put Ars on notice....

actually i should check my bill to see when the actual pay period is before i turn everything on tonight and relize they dont check it until tomorrow afternoon..

Should hit #39 on the next update. Great going Commandos!

Kendrak - Nice work on ABC. We are getting a nice boost in a tough project. Even with the current output we are still only #73 in RAC. I might put another processor on this project and see if we can break into the Top 250 this week.

ok i gave in.. i couldnt find out when they actually come and check the meter.. so i said screw it and started 17 or bust on both cores and rc5-72 on this system.. tomorrow night ill start up the other 2 systems..

39! Nice work Commandos! Pretty much blew that 50 goal out the water eh?

Just a couple of thoughts on wheresatom's "objectives" list. First off the list looks good to me. Second, I think the Commandos are getting noticed as evidenced by the fact there's been over 8000 views on this thread and the additional members that have joined up over the past several weeks. Anyone that's interested will hook up so no "recruiting" should be necessary OR advised. As Alan mentioned, it would only create hard feelings in all likelyhood and would probably do more harm than good. Finally, as to the CC, my belief is that the [H]orde is a TEAM first and foremost. It's not just the F@H team or the WCG team or the DC Commandos but rather all the above. I think all "official" challenges (not the regular ongoing WCG challenges which happen all the time of late) and inter-team competitions should be supported by all DC members. That would include the CC and the WCG race we had with Team Anandtech in WCG during December. While this is a personal decision each DC'r must make, I think supporting the TEAM which is the [H]orde, which represents [H]ardOCP is the right thing to do... I know the WCG challenge with Anandtech in December got great support from the community.

For anyone interested, Simap is releasing more work this evening (2/1).

We're in pretty good standing in SIMAP, but with work being so sporadic, I'll be jumping all over every last unit I can get.

Same here. It's amazing how much progress has been made across the various projects in such a short time.

Maybe SZTAKI is in the middle of updating their stats or something, but I see something weird. Here's a WU I finished: link
The other two participants got points, but it says my result got 0 points. However, on my account page and the team page, I'm credited for the points (otherwise I wouldn't have over 1000). But if you look at the list of top teams, our team is not credited for the points. Anyone else seen something like this before?

edit: [H]ard|OCP has now moved up to #482, so maybe it was a delay in updating stats. My result still shows 0 points, though.

well the one thing that has been proven nomad8u is that challenges spark peoples interests.. and this is how you can get people involved.. it worked with the wcg challenge.. got a crap load of people involved in the DC effort.. and if we can keep it exciting it will keep people interested.. because people have short attention spans and without a challenge usually give up after a while..

I don't currently fold for the [H]orde, but my team is not very active, so I'm willing to help with any challenges. I agree that challenges keep things interesting.
