KILLZONE 2 Review Roundup

Sorry to play the cynic, but I find pre-release reviews from the major sites/magazines of high profile titles amazingly unreliable. For a game with as much hype and history as Killzone 2, I'll wait to see the community reactions before I throw down my $60.

I don't know supposidly everyone has had a final build for a few weeks so it should be accurate, based on their opinion of coarse. But everyone will have their review up Monday cuz the embargo is over with. I don't understand how IGN were able to post their's so much earlier though.

That doesn't really make any sense. A HD vid shows you exactly what you'd see if you were playing the game on your TV... minus the playing part obviously. :p

Yeah that's true but the video's still compressed and I was refering to watching an HD video on a 19' moniter at my office vs playinig it in 720p on my 65"DLP:p

well, the user average on metacritic is 6.3, sooo... ;)

Looks like not enough people have heard of the metacritic user review fanboy warz:

looks like the plan to tighten things up didn't work

This. I first noticed it with LBP. I questioned how a hundred people could play a game that has yet to go gold and give it a 2 in their review?

can it be played with a mouse and keyboard?

No. The only game to have supported this feature on the PS3 is Unreal Tournament 3.

wow some nice reviews, won;t put too much weight on them though. Will wait for some player reviews lol...btw isn;t this dropping end of next month?

From those who have played the beta, there has been nothing but great things said. I am not even a shooter fan but I can't wait for Feb 5th to download and play this game!

As for reviews...I don't give them much stock because they aren't consistent. No one knows what the other is doing with other review scores. Reviewers complain about some game not being original enough and then praise another game that isn't original enough. If you are going to give out a score then at least compare that score towards others you have given out. Even if it isn't intended people will look at that score and say "So X is better than X". I hate review scores. It's just more fuel for fanboy wars.

I don't look at reviews for the "score" per se. I look at reviews to learn more about the game, and the details and experiences of the reviewer. I don't care about the reviewer's "opinion", just what they experienced.

An example would be a reviewer who says a game is slow paced (with a negative connotation). Well, I might be interested in that game, and I was looking to see if it was "slow paced". Immediately, his review score goes down a point...and my score goes up a point.

So I learned more about the game from reviewers, but I really don't care about their score.

It's not the build that gives me pause, it's the reviewers. The situation as it stands today is that pretty much every major release gets high 80's minimum, regardless of the actual quality of the game. There are a lot of reasons why. Sometimes it's to avoid angering rabid fanboys who make up large portions of a site's advertising base. Sometimes it's because the reviewers themselves are blinded by their own nostalgia for a franchise (see just about any Shane Bettenhousen review). Sometimes, although probably not as much as people think, it's due to pressure from publishers who have too much on the line. Most of the time it's a combination of all three, or more factors.

Regardless of the reason, there's a very clear shift in thinking when it comes AAA reviews. Where with regular reviews the unasked question is "why did you score it so high", with AAA reviews it becomes "why didn't you score it higher". It's in too many people's best interest for these games to get good reviews. So much so that even a reviewer trying to be as objective as possible still can't escape all of the influences. Every once in a while a high profile game comes along that's just so bad the reviewers can't avoid giving it a bad score (ie DMC2), but for the most part, these games generally get the highest score a reviewer can give them and still justify it with a straight look on their face.

So IGN is WAY TOO HIGH with a 9.4, but you trust eurogamer at a 9.0 because they're always stingy? Makes sense....

That .4 sure is a huge discrepancy

Hey buddy. Where did I say IGN is way too high? I merely stated they always over-rate. IMO the Eurogamer review actually backs up the IGN review. When I see an IGN review at 9.4, I take it with a grain of salt. When I see a Eurogamer review at 9, I think wow, we might have something great here. Make sense now? As for the .4 discrepency. All things equal, that .4 could very well be a flaw in the game that changes my mind about playing it. So yes, .4 could very well be substantial. Trust who you like Technoob, I refuse to get horny over IGN reviews. I refuse to get horny over any person`s reviews for good reasons. I`ll decide myself.

In general... I just refuse to get horny over reviews.

Or games for that matter. :p

I watched xplay and they had kz2 on there for a review. It showed the sp/mp and they said good things about it. The game looked really good.Looked alot like cod4 gameplay but with better graphics.

I'm likely not to play this online at all... does that make me a bad person? :p

I am, Need a bluray player anyways and my 360 has bored me.

Im picking up the 160gb version with resistance 2, cod4& 5, msg4, and killzone 2 preorder. Should be an awesome gaming month

Watch the videos and see for yourself?

i saw it on xply. Looks fun sounds fun and graphics are killer. but i would hate to shell out 400 bucks for one game :-/

edit: i didnt know ps3 had a 160gb hd lol what for? jk

Wait until release date, then decide. Rent the system and game and see for yourself if you aren't sure.

It's quite unlikely that there's just one game on the system that interests you.

sorry for being a ps3 nub but is the 160gb one Backwards compatable with ps2 titles? If so then i will get one.

nm found out its not.

I wouldn't buy any one system for one game, but if you bought one there'd be plenty of games to enjoy. You really should wait and play it yourself before spending 500 bucks for a ps3 and the game.

Not only that, but it's not like the PS3 is likely to suddenly disappear along with all copies of the game. I'm looking forward to owning a PS3 at some point, but it will probably only happen once the price drops precipitously - I'm unwilling right now to have nearly $1,000 (including games) invested in game consoles within one console "cycle." When I do eventually have a PS3, while I won't experience the "thrill" of playing many of the great PS3 games brand new, I'll still be able to buy and enjoy them, probably for $20 or less. :)

Whatever your preference, getting in late and paying 20 bucks for all of the awesome games in the library is awesome :)

if mgs4 didnt force you to buy ps3, if lbp didnt force you to buy a ps3, then this is the chance to have another good reason to get a ps3.

If not, last chance is with FF13 versus then i think it will be the next generation of consoles...

GoW 3?

oh yeah GoW3 is the absolute final chance lol

Or any number of other games that will come out....this pinning the hopes and dreams of the masses on 2-3 games and pretending that they're the only ones worth playing is part of the reason people get so personally invested in these games in such a fanboyish way.

I would get a ps3 for GOW3 and MGS4 but i never played the originals so i would be completely lost on the story, and would have to read up on wiki i guess which is a bummer since i cant experience it on the console.

Thats why i was hoping the ps3 was Backwards compat so i can catch up...

no, only the 60gb model, but rumor has it they may do software emulation for ps2 games.
