I sold a Shuttle XPC to another user here a couple of months ago. He said he had a UPS account and would have them pick it up at my address. UPS did pick it up and deliver it to him. Over the past couple of months, I've been getting a bills from UPS.

I've ignored them because I have no UPS account. Today, I get a notice from UPS that the account (which isn't even mine) is going to collections.

I'm not sure what's going on. I don't have a UPS account, but they're sending me these bills and then this notice and all of them have my name on them.

I've PM'd the member here about this and he said he would take care of it, but I haven't heard anything since I last PM'd him.

Actually the collections notice I got today wasn't from UPS. It's from some company called "Allied Interstate".

Bad idea, if the bills are coming to your name and address even if you don't think it's yours- UPS does. Time to call them and figure out what's going on since you have no idea and they are the only ones who do.

Allied Interstate is a collection agency known for aggressive and sometimes questionable tactics.

But yeah, since they have your name and your address, it could likely end up as a black mark on your credit report. You need to get this resolved ASAP before that happens.

Well, the buyer (who setup the pickup using his UPS account) hasn't replied to my most recent PM.

His [H] username is: nobody_here

This actually happened to me on a DHL package that had been sent. About 3 months after I started receiving bills for what looked to be the remainder of the shipping invoice. I called DHL and filed a complaint. Once they realized I was the receiver and not the shipper the matter was cleared up.

Call UPS or this Allied company immediately and explain the situation. You shouldn't be held liable for money the shipping party owes.

Sounds like he set up a ups account in your name and did all the work just to get free shipping. The billing statements are only sent to the account holder, otherwise they would have COD the package.

Obvious question: Have you PMed the buyer? I've seen him a lot around here, he should be fairly reachable.

I have PMd him. See post #6 above. How could he setup an account in my name when all he had was my name and address? Don't you need more than that to setup an account?

Thats all you need, UPS doesnt require any special information. I have a UPS account and they just required my name and address, and they just send you bills, which i pay by checkbook. It looks like he may of setup a UPS account in your name/address

the sticky situation is that since u are the shipper, you are liable for shipment charges arent you?

resolution?

if the original agreement was that the buyer would pay for shipping, then the op may not have been liable.

The bottom line is that you need to contact both UPS and the collections agency and find out exactly why they're billing you.

I've contacted UPS and they say they can't give me details unless I give them the account # and a week transaction # (I think that's what the agent called it), but I don't have any of that info.. I don't have a UPS account.

I've also contacted the collections agency and they've filed a dispute claim w/ UPS.

How much is the bill? Did the guy at least pay you for the Shuttle with no problem. Odd he would pay for the thing and skip out on the shipping bill. I always get these fraudulent offers from Ebay to have a shipper pick so I'm very wary of the practice. Good luck.

you wont go bankrupt, cmon... but it will hit your credit

we need to find out if the buyer stole your id and setup that account. it sounds like identity theft and stealing to me.

Yeah I threw the bills away because the buyer said he'd take care of it. The buyer did pay for the Shuttle and the UPS bill is for ~$25.

No matter what the reason for the charge, you simply cannot ignore the collection agencies once they get the account.

They will call you non-stop, even at work, until they are told to stop and then you will take a hit on your credit report.

It looks like you have started the process by disputing the charge with the collection agency. Now the onus is on UPS to provide documentation to the collection agency supporting their claim, which the agency will forward to you.

Just be adamant that you did not set up the account. Also keep an eye on your credit reports, stuff like this has a habit of finding it's way on there no matter what you do. I had this happen to me with Filenes Basement. I paid the bill, but still got sent to collections and despite providing a copy of the cancelled check the charge STILL ended up on my credit report. I had to file a dispute with the reporting agencies to get it taken off. It really is a pain.

Good luck, the truth is on your side and you should prevail so long as you hold UPS's feet to the fire.

It's been a PITA so far dealing with UPS. As I mentioned above, they won't help me since I don't have the account number and I don't have an account number because I don't have a UPS account.

The buyer hasn't responded to my PM either and he has come here since I sent him the PM.

The bills should have had the account number on them D:

Have you tried explaining to ups that you never set up an account with them and you think you're being scammed, cause really, that's what it sounds like...

Kinda OT but I figure this is a good thread to vent about UPS billing..

I haven't used UPS to ship anything in a good couple years. I moved a little over a year ago and out of nowhere I get a bill from UPS (with my account #) about a package sent from my old address after I had already moved. I called them up and explained to them that the package they were trying to bill me for was sent a few months after I moved and they were nice about "taking care of it for me" then that was that. A couple months later I received another bill for the same package but with a large late fee added on to it, so I called them up again and it was the same "we'll take care of it for you" deal. I asked them to just cancel my account since I don't plan to ever ship with them again and they were happy to do so. I had recorded the call this time because they obviously didn't do anything about it the previous time, I confirmed my account number/date/package info/whatnot with them for reference. I'm kinda excited to see how high the bill does get before they contact me about it personally.

3 months later I get the same bill with another late fee slapped on, this time the bill was a total of $60.xx for a package that was originally stated to cost $12.xx. I kept the bill this time and didn't call them, they obviously didn't do anything about the situation yet again so if they want to do something about it I'll expect them to call me as I now have proof I'm in the clear for all of this.

UPS has been nothing but a hassle for me and their billing department people are almost as awesome as the people at AOL. Fuck them.

So I called UPS again today to get this settled. I missed a PM from nobody_here on December 3. He gave me his company's UPS shipping account number, his company's name, phone number and the name of someone from his company that UPS could speak to.

I had to explain the whole thing to UPS again when I called today. The customer service agent told me that the account setup under my name had a zero balance now and that's what they do once it's sent to collections. I told her that it's unethical and probably illegal to just setup an account under someone's name w/o their consent and then bill them. When I told her that and asked for her name, she put me on hold and when she came back told me that she had just closed my account and issued a "shortpay" or something like that and to just ignore the bills and the letter from the collections agency.

Then she gave me the number to UPS's accounts receivable department. I called them and explained to them as well what was happening. I gave them the account number that James Gray gave me and Fireking's phone number as well as that other employee's name at Fireking (Toni Medlock) that James Gray gave me.

This agent in accounts receivable that I was speaking with said they didn't need all that info. since the account that's under my name is inactive now and has a zero balance. They did say they'd try billing that account number that James Gray PM'd me and if they couldn't bill it, they'd turn around and bill me again + an additional chargeback fee.

What should I do now?

Call the collections folks and make sure that they are on the same page as you and UPS.

Right now, information and the truth is behind you. The more you provide, and the more you facilitate the flow of it, the better off you will be.

And document the HELL out of everything!

You need to send a letter in writing to the collection agency telling them not to contact you further unless its to 1. provide proof that this debt is actually yours (which should give you the account number and transaction that hasn't been paid) and 2. To give you notice of going to court.

You can find form letters online - just do some googling for the fair credit reporting act.

A couple of things to add -
They can not put a mark on your credit report from your name and address...... They have to verify a SSN before anything can be put on your report.

If there was officially an acct set up at UPS in your Name by someone else w/o Consent that is Identity theft, and is a felony under any degree of loss. There for, you should contact his local PD and file a Fraud claim against him.

Why hasnt the person in question been contacted to respond to this thread, the moderators used to be a lot more helpful in these situations. What happened to the old [H]ardforums we loved so much.

Just because nobody noted in the thread that they PMed him doesn't mean no contact was made. The guy hasn't been on since the 17th

They are trying to collect from the UPS account holder, not from you personally. UPS is under the impression that you are affiliated with that company, which is incorrect. You can pretty much safely ignore that, if you do not in fact, have a UPS account. All they have is your address and the companies/guy's name/their account #. They don't have you SSN, or access to your credit.

If he did it through work, this could happen if the company did not pay their UPS bill. Rest assured, the calls may be coming to you, but they are attached to that UPS account #, which isn't yours. If that is in fact the case, you need to call UPS and tell them you are receiving bills in error, and give them the UPS account # to which that bill is attached, so they leave you alone and pursue that individual/company.

Try to find out definitively if you have a UPS account or not. If he set one up with your name/credentials, it WILL hurt your credit. If not, throw that shit away and ignore the calls, it won't hurt your credit

I had a Instance were a local Company that takes care of my yard ( Scotts Lawn Service ) would come and fertilize my yard and spray for weeds 6 to 8 times a year. When they originally started the service they came all year and i didnt have any problems, i sold my house in November and in the Spring They came back and started Treatments again. Well about 6 months later the new owner contacted me and said i had a couple of bills left on his doorstep for yard treatments i was furious. I contacted them and told them why did they start service in the spring ( be it there was no contract signed or any aggreements on continued service ) and they said that they left the first bill on the door knob and unless i called to cancel they would continue service. They tried to bully me with the bill but i never signed anything nor did they have any personal information and guess what, no marks on my credit and i refuse to pay the bill, The only way for them to force me to pay or even harm my credit would be to take me to court over $170. So just be in contact with UPS and the Collection Agency and you should be OK, BUT DONT PAY THE AGENCY A DIME! If you do the debt wil become Valid.

this is 100% incorrect. This is a tactic used by both AI and UPS. They themselves wont deny it actually. In fact they take a look at the shipping from address and send most if not all of them bills at some point if the invoices arent paid. To them if the item is shipped from an address even if that address isnt in the same state as the account holder, they hold them liable until the party can contact them to explain they arent the "shipper" so to speak or the account holder. It isa way to get you to get in contact with the actual account holder. Its a very shady way to operate. like black mail but I guess lawful unless someone lets the atorney general and BBB aware of this. They assume if they shipped from there then you know them "like that" for lack of a better term.

its simple. Call them and ask them if the name on the account matches yours. If they continue to be of no help, ask to speak to the billing department or an account supervisor. Every account holder should have one if Im not mistaken. File a report with the cops as well. This will help in getting the member involved. The amount maybe small but if it IS under your name then its considered identity theft and post 9/11 that shit is take deep throat serious.

Do you know the tracking number it shipped on? If so you can get the account number.

Example 1Z1234560311234567

The numbers in Red are the account number it shipped with.
The Blue numbers are the ship method, ie 3 = Ground, 2 = 2nd Day Air, 1 = Next Day Air.
The Yellow numbers is just a random unique sequence for that package.

Then call UPS customer support and explain that this is not your account. If you can somehow prove that the buyer setup a account in your name, you can have him charged with identity theft.
