Just ordered the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA

Right now I'm using a ViewSonic PS775, so I KNOW it'll be better....heh.
But honestly, it'll be better. ;)

btw I asked about faster shipping & Marcus implied there was nothing faster... damnit.

I dont know, when I finally switched from CRT to lcd (Samsung 2253BW)last year I wasn't very happy. But I got used to the TN panel limitations.

Well, this is an IPS panel not TN, so hopefully there won't be much of an adjustment. Besides, I just want a decent temp monitor until the good LED-backlit IPS panels come out. My previous 19-incher just crapped out, which is why I wanted the 2209WA so soon; I hate using this 17 inch CRT.

Yeah my buddy had a 2007WFP with the IPS and man I was jealous when my Samsung monitor didnt come close to his. But it died, I got a refund, and here I am.

Now he's pissed he doesnt have enough cash laying around to pick up two of these.

Everytime I call I'm asked to leave a voice message? Anyone leave a message and got a call back?

I got the same thing when I tried to call at this hour yesterday. I simply called back late in the morning and placed my order then. Although, considering tomorrow's a Saturday, Marcus might not be in. However it seems as though there have been posts confirming at least two other representatives also giving the $215 deal, so if you can't get ahold of him directly, you might want to just try speaking with someone else and inquiring about the price.

This monitor seems pretty good for using on a gaming PC and adding either an Xbox360 or a Wii console. Both can handle 1680 x 1050 resolution without the need for 1:1. 360 with update to support 16x10 and Wii thru Vdigi cable.

For Xbox 360 yes, because it does 1680x1050 as a supported resolution, and puts the black bars in for you to go to 16:9 image area.

For Wii it will expand the image to 16:10. stretching it vertically from 16:9

Maybe wait for the 23" 1920x1080 panel to show up in some screens and take it from there. By then revision A01 of this screen will be out probably :)

What is the 23" monitor you're referring to? Is it better than this 22" in terms of quality?

Thanks, Got one too spoke to Marcus hopefully the monitor is IPS panel.

hope so, turned out my Dell 20' UltraSharp is a TN which kind of defeats the purpose of their UltraSharp line.. the whole reason to charge a hella lot more was to make sure you didnt get a TN panel, and for the adjustable stand and rotation... but dell is always sneaky!

How do you check if they shipped you a TN monitor? How do you make sure that they don't switch it in the first place?

I really doubt Dell goes out and ninja swaps an IPS panel with a TN. At most a VA panel, but there is no reason to, as e-IPS seems cheaper to produce than VA panels.

How does eIPS compare to VA in terms of quality? If it's cheaper to produce, is that not good?

Higher cost does not necessarily mean better.

The eIPS is an 8-bit panel, much like most VA and IPS panels. It also has a 5* or 6 g2g response time which puts it in the category of the lower (ms) end for response times of VA and IPS monitors. A VA monitor is much more likely to be 6 g2g than any IPS monitor. The eIPS is still an IPS panel, meaning it doesn't have the color shifting that the VA panels have. How it stands up in real world color accuracy and overall is unknown until someone runs tests.

*Spec sheets for the monitor differ in that they list the panel as having 5ms or 6ms g2g response times.

Anyone know if Marcus is there today? :p

Thinking of ordering this monitor and then selling my LG L227WTG

Do any of you know how this will compare to an older PVA panel? I have a 17" samsung 740T pva monitor and don't want to get something that'll produce colors worse then this screen. Since the e-ips only does 83% of the color gamut how does that compare?

It's exactly the same as your 17".

Good to hear about the color quality. I'm just annoyed that this is a dell monitor. But nothing I can do about that, I need a 22" panel if I want dual displays as my desk isn't big enough and this is the only decent 22" out there. Just going to wait and see what the rest of you decide when you actually get the screen.

Have they? Which model was this?

There were a few S-IPS models (the 2007WFP was one) where they silently switched to PVA, and a few popular TN models where high and low quality panels were mixed up and it has basically a lottery as to what you were going to get.

I don't think this will happen with this 2209WA at least for now because they have announced that it uses this new eIPS technology.

I really like Dell customer service policies, build quality, and when you actually get what you want to buy, their image quality so its a shame we've had to deal with BS like that in the past. It makes everyone who got burned more wary. There are theories on other forums of selling these for cheap initially and creating buzz, and then swapping the panel for a cheaper one. But if this eIPS really is cheaper to produce then why would they?

But they never switched an IPS to a TN. I know about all the other lotteries.

They list most of the panel types right there. IPS to VA was a big deal, and I guess the TN lottery is a problem for a company that charges a "quality premium", but it seems like they're more transparent now.

Edit: They still call it "In Panel Switching". Maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Those links aren't for the US...
Dell will be relatively honest to customers outside the US, not in the US... probably because there are a lot of people who don't care about the quality over the price...
Canada / Europe / India (the links that were posted) Dell links all show IPS / VA or other panel information...
US I haven't seen a chart for unfortunately... or maybe I've just been navigating their site wrong..

Someone also posted here quite a bit ago that in Korea (South I'm assuming, since North probably has limited to no internet access), computer monitors with IPS or other quality screens are way cheaper there... to the point where it's like $350 after conversion (months ago currency exchange rate) for a 26"... while we're here paying close to double if not more for one...

Glad technology is advancing... btw ;x

*I still think the silver European version of the 2209WA looks awesome / better than the black version in the States..

The support page from the US site says its an e-IPS

I must be doing something wrong... because when I search and do a comparison, it doesn't say anywhere that it's an E-IPS panel :(

Although it's supposedly confirmed (more or less), could you link me? :)

Hey not so fast, I have evidence of my claim. Here's my NEC 20WMGX2 with the Wii hooked up via Vdigi VGA cable. It adds perfect black bars at exactly 1680 x 945 scaled resolution.

Looks like a pretty interesting monitor. I'm definitely looking forward to some pics and first impressions.

Mine should come in on Tuesday.

Pretty excited and can't wait. 200 dollars is a steal for a monitor with an IPS panel in my opinion. Of course only time will tell if this monitor will live up to the hype or not, but my gut feeling is that it will.

The input lag is acceptable, the black level is acceptable, the gamut is acceptable, pretty much the only way they can fail is by screwing up the text and HP is the only company capable of doing that to an IPS so far.

Well, there's always the annoying power supply buzz of death or overdrive overshoot.

20WMGX2 has aspect ratio scaling in the OSD. Apparently (unless someone else here can chime in) the 2209WA does not. Lemme check the manual.........No it doesn't. It only has 4:3 mode or full screen according to the manual, under the "display settings" area.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2209WA/en/ug/operate.htm

But, if you set the Wii to 640x480 and put the monitor to 4:3 mode you should get a half decent picture over VGA, it just won't be the "wide screen" picture you are showing here with the 20wmgx2.

Anyone know if this deal is still alive? I just called some rep today and they had no idea what i was talking about. I called Marcus but no go. It went straight to voicemail. I"m thinking he has the day off. I'll try tomorrow. The stupid thing was when I was requesting the 2209WA the rep was like "How about you take the 2208wfp". I knew it wasn't an IPS panel, but I asked her anyway. Her response was "yeah... its an IPS". I just hung up.

First time I called I got a rep who wouldnt sell it to me for $215...he then recommended some 24" monitor for $239 that he said was "better". I got off the line quickly too.

Glad I got in on the deal with Marcus. Regardless I think $299 is still a good price for this and I was ready and willing to pay that as well.

10e, the 20WMGX2 doesn't have any scaling options at all in the VGA input. It only has auto adjust which I'm not sure counts as scaling. I'm trying to hookup my Wii on other 16:10 monitors to see how it will show up.

Anyway this Dell seems like a winner so far. Maybe Dell will make 24-26" versions with more inputs and functionality and hopefully keep the standard gamut.
