anyone had any experience with refurbished video cards? looking at biting on one to save cash but short warranty period sure scares me.

I'd stay away honestly. Anything refurb kind of scares me.

I'm sure you could wrangle up something on the forum with a longer warranty, no? Probably pay a few more bucks I'm sure though.

i bought a 24" lcd refurb from geeks.com and this thing has been great. the video card is really tempting, but only 15 day warranty scares the heck out of me.

any input from someone who has actually purchased one?

Don't buy refurbished unless you are desperate. At least one component has failed and has stressed most all others, shortening the life of the card.

"refurbished" usually just means a card that someone else returned, and after doing superficial tests, decided that it still "works" so they sell it as "Refurbished".

A lot of times they dont even test it. For instance if I returned a used card and said that it worked in my RMA (but it was screwed up and I just wanted a refund, not a replacement). Most companies would just sell it as open box.

Ive never had any problems with any vid cards I've gotten from newegg that were refrubished or open box

I don't think I've ever seen a refurbished or open box video card that was so much less than the new one that it justified purchasing it over the new one.

There is nothing wrong with buying refurbished items. I have a HDTV (1080p) that I bought as refurbished and it's already past the 90 days warranty, runs like new. Also got a 22" lcd, also refurbished and it's better than a brand new one, because it's a new model number. I say go for it. If it breaks the first 90 days then you got a bad item. If i goes beyond 90 days chances are good that it's a good one. Also new item will break too, just so you know. I say save some money and get a refurbished. Would you buy a re-certified used car or do you buy brand new and lose money after you drive off the lot? I bought 2 used cars and it's been running fabulous, beside oil changes and tires.. really haven't had any other trouble. By doing that I have money in the bank ;)

Make sure you run some benchmark tests. If it doesnt fail in first 15 days it wont fail. But you have to make sure at the beginning.
