Windows 7 Beta Goes Public

I expect the same thing from this as I did Vista... 1 year at most, then an activation fee. I'm also getting 1.09 mb/sec on the 64 bit (3.15 Gig) file through the direct link so who knows if I'll even get a key...

im getting 433 kb/s time warner 15mb cable socal on the direct links.

still cant get a damn key >.<

my x86 download just stopped at 744 megs saying completed, umm this happen to everyone else?

they cut those lines, look at my other post for the new links

5% done here at 80KBps >_< sad that that is my max....

How are people activating it :(

With Vista and W7 you don't need the key to install and use for 30 days (activation is not required to install, patch, anything but submit bugs apparantely as I found out last night).

You can push that up to 120 days with the rearm command

ah thanx, around 744 megs of bandwidth and download time wasted, ah well this is is going pretty fast for me at 1.2 MB/s, 300 megs down, ≈ 2000 to go :p

Burning the iso to a disc. :D Already made a coaster by bumping PC.

Any word on when the keys will be available again?

With as much as microsoft has been getting hammered.. Guaranteed those 2.5 mill of keys will be gone in seconds.

I doubt they gave away 2.5 Million keys already. I heard from Wired they were having problems with the key distribution system (link earlier in the thread).

my d/l still going but slower. did the first 50% @ 3mb/s, now going at a mild 250k. 54%

so what are the keys for? just to disarm the 30 day limit?

what i think he is saying is that if thousands (or millions) tried to DL a linux distro from the same place at the same time we would see the same problems

The big difference between torrenting and FTP/HTTP servers is that torrenting scales better than FTP or HTTP servers. If more people use torrents, all the users get better download speeds. People get out of the line faster, and at less cost to the original provider. Additionally, large-scale torrents do not result in original hosting servers going down, as it is a distributed network effectively (mesh) as opposed to point-to-point/server-client.

When major Linux distros release new versions A LOT of people download that version. What do they recommend as the best way to acquire the file? The torrent they provide, for good reasons as outlined above.

ok downloading the 64 bit now also on my kubuntu laptop. 300kb/s socal time warner as well. still at around 430kb/s on my vista desktop downloading 32 bit.

question.

did ANYONE get the key? just curious if anyone from here got to see that page at all.

Fuck it, even the new links you posted 86 5.0L cut out for me. It said the download was out of 2.4 gigs but it suddenly stops and gives me a completed message at 399 megs...what the hell?

The keys extend the beta until August 1, 09 and allow you to submit bug reports. I read on another site (computer world I think) that the rearm command does work on the beta so that'll let you get 120 days out of an install without the key.

If I install this I would probably be using it for as long as it takes to go retail hehe.

mine is still chugging along, not sure what happened to you, are you using FF or IE? i used IE to download it since FF is too unstable...

Great link on the dual boot! Thanks, I knew how but it's nice to reference.

Is anybody else getting a 404 error from the page?
Instead of getting the server busy error, it 404's on me.

Also, instead of choosing which version to download, the first page just says : "Windows® 7 Beta coming soon!"

Is this happening to anyone else?

Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!

Thank you sir! Im downloading now but how do I get an activation key ?

Through the technet site but the server is too busy(and i think already reached 2.5million keys but i could be totally wrong ) however you can still use windows 7 beta but a 30days limit without the key. Yes also thanks steve!! you rock.

Strange, the direct links work ONLY in ffox will not work in IE or Chrome..downloading both x64 and x86

the current 64 bit one. but I just stopped in favor of the direct download link. I still need to get a key though.

The X-FI drivers will install, but you need to right click them and set compatibility mode = Vista first. It doesn't recognize the build for W7 and just quits the installer, no problems with the driver though if you make it thing you're installing on Vista.

No X-Fi here, still using Audigy 2 Platinum, I refuse to give Creative another penny because of the crap software they have.

im using firefox right now since im on a backup laptop thats the equivalent of a macbook air haha

ill go try it out in IE and see if it works

Looks like all 2.5 million keys are gone already, although I think I will be getting a key due to signing up for one to test the Media Center functions w/ WHS (I hope).

But how does not being able to report bugs help Microsoft? The point of a beta is to test for bugs, not to get the software earily. That seems to be what a lot of people miss the point of. If you download beta software if to test it and to report bugs back to the company that made the software so that they can fix those bugs before the software goes live.

HAHAHA Just went to check the blog and got a "Server too busy" notice. hehehe That's priceless... can't even read the blog that's telling people they don't have enough servers/bandwidth because the server hosting the blog is getting hit too hard from people trying to find out why the servers are down. HEHEHEHE Classic Catch-22...

I figured things were heading that way when it was so slow to load for me. That's why I went ahead and posted the text.

Aww, Steve, you ruined those two working download links from MSFT by putting it on the front page.

I was getting 1.7MBps and it was nearly complete, now it has slowed considerably.
