Hi everybody,

I'm sure this has been discussed but i'm at a crossroads on whether or not to buy this game for PC. I had been curious about it because my roommate had gotten it. He said that sometimes it works great and other times it crashes at random but that it's an awesome game.

Last night I went to watch him play for a while and he kept trying to load his save game to show me some cool part that he had saved. It would just lock up on the save game and he would have to task manager out and it would be "not responding". This happened like 4 times before he finally gave up and said that he would just show me later.

I went on to their website and dug through the forums and I guess there are tons of bugs and crashes throughout the game and that they aren't doing much patching. Think I only found 1 patch.

Sorry for the wall of text.

Justin

Just wait until you hear news of another patch if you've waited this long.

I definitely think it's an awesome game.

I had one crashing problem very rarely throughout the entire game and I fixed it with about 5 minutes on google. After that, no problems at all, awesome game too.

When you read an official forum for a big game you will always see lots of bugs and problems, painting the picture of a game that is a total mess. In reality it's nowhere near that bad for most people.

For me personally, I don't think Fallout 3 has crashed more then a couple of times in ~40 hours of playing.

Yeah, I generally agree with this. People bash the left4dead server system like crazy and although I have had some problems it is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

I guess I was just really thrown off by my roommates firsthand account of it not working. Also I am on Vista x64 and that seems to be where most of the problems come from according to the forums and he has Vista x64 as well though he seems to get more lucky than I when it comes to general Vista problems.

Got to 80 on WoW and during the week it is too much of a timesink when I have limited time so I need a new game for weekdays and was hoping this would be the one.

So the general consensus is I should just buy the game and hope for the best? Or wait for them to drop another patch?

Hard to tell. Sure seems like a lot of people having varying sorts of problems.

You're VERY lucky.

Yeah, I have pretty much decided to buy it. I guess that at the very least their tech support is super helpful. I did more browsing about issues with Fallout 3 and Vista x64 and it seems like most of the problems stem from this combo.

Probably true. I'm one of them.

Great game, 70 hours of play and I've only had 2 crashes. Not a big problem if you ask me.

It can't be too hard to fix unless you're f*cking retarded, there's something wrong with your PC if you have that many issues. My only problem was related to having a quad core, just had to manually tell the game to run 4 threads in the .ini, literally took 5 minutes on google to fix.

Game is well worth... whatever it costs. I didn't pay for it.

You need to calm down there little fella. A) we shouldn't have to fix anything, the game should work flawlessly. B) Just cause you had one problem and it was easy to fix for you doesn't mean that everybody will have that same problem and that it was easy to fix. C) The game is notorious for being buggy so chances are it is not the users PC it is the game.

On a side note, thanks for the reply either way. I will add you to the list of people who have had issues with the game.

been playing Fallout 3 for a few weeks now with Vista64...there have been a few crashes but none of them occured in game...they all seemed to happen after exiting the game...game would crash to desktop...no biggie though...if a crash is gonna happen, better to happen upon exit rather then during

Agreed. Well i'm gonna go pick it up in about 40 mins so i'll post an update tomorrow on how it all went just in case anybody cares.

Update: I am so frustrated I think I will take the game back tomorrow. No luck whatsoever with getting past the initial splash screen. First, I dealt with it not recognizing the disk and secuROM saying I was using a backup disk.

Then after finally getting the game installed I go to start a new game and instant black screen crash. Have to Ctrl+Alt+Del out and the task manager says it is not working. I have been working on solutions from the millions of pages of people complaining about bugs for the last 2 hours and can't get past the "New Game" screen. Have emailed Bethesda and I am going to hope they respond by tomorrow otherwise I am going to hope and pray that the game shop will take the game back.

That's terrible luck for you then. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my install on Vista Ultimate x64. Sorry man...it's such a good game too.

I love this game and it's worth every penny. I only crashed after the initial cutscene, then never again. :)

I got a few random crashes with my 40-50 hours of gameplay, and they are RANDOM but doesn't stop me from playing this great game....

Damn Bro....That fukin suks.

I do recall when I was installing the game, it had quite a LONG pause during installation and I thought the install had froze up or something...I was about to do a ctrl/alt/dlt, but I decided to give it some time instead (sometimes, installs are just that way)...sure enough, it started along again.

The only crashes Ive had were simple CTD types and I think its happened about 3-4 times since I started playing the day after Xmas.

But also, I use XP...as you can see at the bottom of my signature....Im no fan of Vista at all. I have a buddy who is a programming tech and I trust his words and when he said not to bother with Vista untill its about 2-3 years old, I pretty much put those words in bronze.

I dont think Ive seen one game come out since Vista has been on the scene where there wasnt a problem associated with that OS and the game....there has always been SOME type of issue with it.....so to me.....why deal with a headache...XP works just fine....give Vista time to sort thru all the bugs it has and THEN get it.

One other thing....not sure how you go about installing your games and whatnot....but be sure to DISABLE any antivirus programs you may have running prior to installing.

I know that NOD32 and this game have issues, so you have to manually go into NOD32 and tell it to ignore the FO3 game file.

Sounds like you have some issues with your PC. Maybe a format & reinstall with fresh drivers for everything is what's needed.

Yeah, my PC itself is stable. I've never had problems of the hardware variety but I have had what seems like endless random problems with Vista x64. It started with punkbuster issues in some of my favorite multiplayer fps to a complete cluster F*ck with my mic and sound cards/onboard sound.

I decided last night to swap to XP 64 and just bail out on this whole Vista experiment. Hopefully Windows 7 will be great. Regardless I think I am still going to take this game back and get a credit because of all the SecuRom bullsh*t I was dealing with. I don't know, i'm just frustrated. I actually wanted to play this game too. Maybe after I get XP 64 installed and settled I will give this game another try but for now it's going back.

Well it's your loss :( GOTY 2008.

Incorrect sir, technically it's Bethesda's loss of my $50. IMO they should have made a game that worked. But that's in a perfect world, I am sad that I can't play it but wtf am I supposed to do. I aint about to sit there beating my head into the wall for another 3 hours trying to get it to run based on all the random solutions people have posted. It got to the point of people messing with video and audio codecs and running it in windows 2000 compatibility and cancelling zune processes running etc. What a bunch of sh*t.

Honestly what do you recommend? Reformat my system for a game? Delete and change my programs for this game because Bethesda says I can't use them (daemon tools). Get a different OS for this game?

I take it youve done all the standard things. Defrag, scandisk, no other programs running when installing or playing.. ie doing a clean boot?

Have you tried moving all the files to a hard drive and setting up by hitting setup.exe instead of what ever usually comes up?? Had a serious problem with a game and this took care of it stright away.

Very sorry youre having such problems and I know that same flustration.

When was the last time you redid your system? Ive read all over the net that vista 64 is nothing but a headache with games. Perhaps its not ready for prime time? Is FO3 a 64bit game? I have no clue if it is. How does one play a 32bit game with a 64bit OS or is it automatically backward compatable?

Hate to say it but I have redone my system for a game. It also took care of all the problems.

wonder how securerom and daemon tools get along?

My Fallout 3 has only crashed about 3 times during almost 70 hours of gameplay, and thats on 64bit Vista, so I have nothing to bitch about

Yeah, I did all those first things. I even messed with the codecs and compatibility/security things. Nothing even phased it, same crash everytime. And yes, Vista x64 is a pain in the ass. I am going to XP 64 this weekend until windows 7 comes out. I don't know so much if FO3 is a 64bit game but I have 4GB's of RAM and I want to be able to use them. SecuROM is garbage, plain and simple. And to answer your question they don't get along at all.

I'm in a pickle though, I called the game store last night and he said that their policy is no returns on computer games. They will only replace it with another copy of the same game. He said however that since at this moment in time they didn't have any other copies of FO3 that he would take it back and give me a store credit. I won't be able to do the swap to XP till probably Sunday so do I risk not returning the game and just hoping it'll work with XP or do I return it and go buy it again at a later date? I dunno...

If you can get all your difficulties settled. I think you will find this to be a very rewarding game. And worth the time and effort youve taken to figure this all out. So, I would keep your copy.

I dont know you personally so cant make that a iron clad statement.. but I have to say this is one seriously fun game.
