Help NOVA scienceNOW improve this site and earn $15!

Leave this window open and go back to sciencecafes.org to keep exploring as you would have. When you are done, return here and choose to take our survey. It will only take about 10 minutes, and you’ll have helped us make a better site for everyone interested in science cafes.

Plus you’ll receive a $15 gift certificate to Amazon.com once you’ve fully completed the survey.

Thanks again!

Great site, too. I hope I helped out. There is a lot of information on that page, and I bookmarked it and am going to be a big part of that one!

This seems like a pretty cool idea. The survey was also painless, thanks!

Wow. Never heard of a Science Cafe. Will look into them for sure!

Survey was a breeze. Hope to see the GC soon though. :)

Not letting you take the survey, anyone get info in your email account yet?

Thanks. $15 Amazon GC is as good as $15 cash to me. Was there an ETA on when the GC will be emailed?

looks dead

Thank you for your interest. Goodman Research Group, Inc. (GRG) is a research firm that specializes in the evaluation of educational programs, materials, and services. We recently contracted with, and conducted a survey of the website, sciencecafes.org, a project funded via the National Science Foundation. Sciencecafes.org is produced by NOVA scienceNOW. It was created with the help and input of many science café organizers, and is intended as a community resource that will support and encourage the growth of science cafés.

The goal of the survey was to determine who uses the sciencecafes.org website to learn about how to organize and/or attend a science café in their local community in order to improve this resource for that audience.

It has recently come to our attention that the existence of this survey, intended for completion by potential and current science café organizers and attendees, has been widely publicized on “freebie” boards and the survey has been completed by those other than this specific intended audience, and often with multiple entries from the same IP address, to the detriment of the intended purpose of this educational research. We have never in the past encountered a situation where our surveys have been inappropriately publicized in this manner.

Due to this high volume of inappropriate respondents rendering us with invalid data, we will need to discard all data received. Consequently, we are unable to provide gift certificates.

Regrettably, the data we received in this manner will not inform the developers of sciencecafes.org.

What the hell do they expect? Oh well. Never have high hopes for free shit.

Since they have my e-mail, IF they contact me, I'll be sure to mention the use of emailing me requires a deposit of $15, gladly accepted in the form of Amazon Gift cards.

lol, now that was funny. They are breaking their own terms. They said fill out survey, get GC with no fine print. What if it was just to collect active email accounts? Either they were legit, in which case they are required to give the GC or they were a scam, either case we have a right...no a responsibility to report them:p

I sent them a long email (Science Cafes). I asked to be notified of another survey opportunity (rewarded or not). I still think this is a great idea, and I'd like to see more of them closer to me. Oh well, I'll be headed to OMSI in PDX again in a few weeks, and I'll check one out.

ouch...eyah...they should have had better terms and had seen this coming. Multiple submissions, disqualification, blah blah blah

but honestly, we can't all cry foul on them. cry foul on those who took something meant for good and twisted it to their own gains. Reminds me of the bankers we lend a few bucks too...

Received this email today :D:
To whom it may concern:

As you may already know, GRG, a veteran educational research firm, recently pulled a survey that was posted on the educational website sciencecafes.org. The survey was conducted as part of contract with NOVA scienceNOW and had a legitimate intent to improve the site for its frequent users.

When our response rate jumped from 5 to over 13,000 in the span of a few hours, we investigated, as we expected a typical response of 100 to 200. We typed a part of the survey announcement into Google, and learned that anonymous participants had posted our survey link on websites dedicated to coupons, discounts, freebies, etc. and invited an unintended audience to participate. It’s unfortunate that you completed the survey in the few hours during which we were unaware of these inappropriate postings and we are as disappointed as you are that the data for this survey were so severely compromised.

Undoubtedly, given the number of responses, there were survey respondents who sought out the website to learn about science cafés and completed the survey in good faith. However, because it is impossible to determine which respondents provided genuine responses, we have been forced to discard all of the data received, and will be unable to provide gift certificates for any completed surveys. We have consulted our legal counsel who agreed this is the correct course of action.

We regret the inconvenience and will take steps in the future to prevent such an occurrence.

Just got the email. Figured something would go wrong.

They can see where the referrals are coming from. You guys helped kill this one by clicking the link given.

Whenever you post a [freebie item], make sure you uncheck the box by "Automatically parse URLs: automatically adds [url} and [/url] around internet addresses." so that people have to cut-and-paste the address to visit the deal's link. This is so that it doesn't appear to the site that all the deal exploiters are coming from the [H].

More specifically--so that hardforum.com isn't seen as the referrer to the deal's page.

Remember--if you want these deals to last longer, don't give people clickable links.
I'll remind you that many times freebies are aimed at a certain audience, such as a business or potential customer that would use their products/services.

It's unethical to falsify information to get something you're not really qualified to received.

I think it was more than just HardForum users clicking on that link that killed this survey.

I actually browsed the site for several minutes, read some stuff, and wrote constructive criticism.

Which is why Lethal said "helped".

I understand, but judging by how many views and posts this thread has, it's *way* less than the number of views and posts that are on actual "deals" sites (that Science Cafes complained about). I'm guessing SD, FW, etc. are who really killed the deal. ;)
