Hello all,

I think this is very HOT !

If any of you are in the market for a gaming 17" laptop, and you were mourning the demise of 7811FX your worries and search should be over.

Best Buy is selling the new Gateway p7805u, which is the new BB iteration of their FX line. The specs are literally the same, except for 320GB HDD and 1GB Vid Ram. The computer is not even on their website, yet. You have to go to the store and have them search item no #9172511, it should come up.

For the LA people, I just got one from West LA Best Buy (Pico/Sawtelle), they had a total of 2 in stock and most of the stocks were showing stock in the system. Be on their case, while you talk to them, because this is a new inventory and they don't seem to know where they put it !

Please review the thread over at the Notebookreview forums for more information.

Happy hunting,
DK

How come I cannot find any pics of this notebook anywhere on the internet?

I just walked out of the same BB on sawtell/pico and got the last one. They had it in a glass storage case under the laptop displays. The rep in the store looked it up, no problem.

I'm going to confirm WUXGA status and keep you guys posted!

Mine is WUXGA, not WXGA like specified on the box and palm rest sticker. Seeing that on notebookreview is pretty much what sealed this deal for me! CPU is P8400 @ 2.26ghz w/ 3MB.... looks like 4522.02 bogomips :).

There is some white bleed through at the bottom of the display. The fit and finish of this unit seems poor. There's a sticker hanging inside that catches a little on the dvd tray, it smudges easily, plastic is cheap looking, and I don't agree with the keyboard layout... this is coming from someone who is used to Dell and HP business class notebooks.

Having said that.. with WUXGA, 4gb of ram, and what looks like two hard drive bays, I'm *extremely* satisfied with this purchase. :D

It ships with some kind of Acer boot manager installed in the MBR, plus a 10GB NTFS partition (with a partition ID of 27?) for recovery, then the rest is split into a large NTFS drive. Obviously some work to do before this is ready for prime time... I love new toys :)

Thanks for the heads up!!!

Acer boot manager? Or do you mean Gateway?

I don't know how it's branded, I haven't booted off of the drive yet.

In the MBR (sector zero) there is a reference to "Acer" and on the hidden NTFS partition there is a directory called "AcerBoot". I bet if I actually run the recovery partition I will get the Acer recovery program but with Gateway logos.

I called three area Best Buy stores, no joy :(

Hopefully this just means they don't have it in stock yet.

If they just check on the website, it won't show up. They have to log into their internal system. Ask them by the part number, see if they can tell you which stores have it in stock, and let them know it doesn't show up on the web site.

Well, I just got my 7811 yesterday. Not much time to test it out but it seemed fine, no heat issue or screen defects. Nice to see the prices coming down.

Acer owns Gateway(also emachines) so therefore Acer=Gateway. My p-6831fx is at the "Acer" shop right now. I was just as confused as you when I called the gateway number and the guy that picked up the phone said "Acer support this is Cole."

Checked all Milwaukee, WI area BB's and none of them have it yet. Not even on order :(

Ok running 1920x1200 on my 24" P-MVA monitor is at my the limit of tolerance, so I am scratching my head as to how a WUXGA screen on a 17" laptop is going to be remotely usable. How am I possibly going to be able to read the text on this screen, which I am sure is a TN panel and will make matters even worse...

Also, not one mention of the battery? Really? It is a laptop, the battery is a critical component. How many cells? How long does it last? Important stuff..

Discussions did state that it is overall very similar to the 7811fx and 7801u models, so one can assume that the 7805u will come with the same cell size with a very similar battery life.

The battery hangs out the rear of the unit, and Vista is telling me it is going to get 3 hours and some change on Balanced mode. I was also defragging, burning some DVD's, installing some software, and other moderate workloads.

So depending on usage, it seems like the 7877 and 7801 are very good guidelines.

lol, no need to get offended man....

First off, yes, you can bet 1920x1200 on a 17" screen is going to be tiny. I don't know why you have a problem with it at 24" though... That is approximately the same as 1680x1050 @ 20", 1440x900 @ 17", etc.... Do you have bad eyes? If that's the case then a WUXGA screen on a laptop probably isn't for you. For people who can get used to it though, 1920x1200 is great.

Second.... this laptop is VERY similar to the P-7811FX, and pretty similar to the P-6831FX, so those battery life's on those laptops should give you a pretty good idea. I have the P-6831FX, and basically with power savings on in Vista and low brightness, I can get 2 to 2 1/2 hours with normal internet surfing or movie watching.

They all have 9-cell batteries. Apparently the P-7811FX can last longer because it has better power savings with DDR3 ram and a more energy efficient chipset.

I will also buy one if anyone is selling :) Can't find them here in Wisconsin at all.

everyone pm me

I just got 4 of them today.

nom nom nom

Wish I hadn't just upgraded my desktop, I would be so down for one of these.
However I know my roommate was looking for a higher end laptop, so I will hit you up with a PM.

all the pms answered with reasonable price with shipping, taxes that I paid and my hard work of driving there......

Remember how I called and they said they didn't have any? They lied :)

I got the last one.

I'm loving mine! Although it is taking me a while to get used to the small keys, and I'm not used to the location of the Fn button...imo the left Ctrl and Fn button should be swapped.

Sweet just got home with mine, this is my first REAL powerful laptop. The geeksquad lady was really concerned that I wasnt buying any other software to go with it from them lol.

I stormed into BB and bought it as if my life depended on it. This deal is smoking hot, I think the salesperson was a little scared by me lol, especially after I repeatedly asked him to "CHECK THE PRODUCT NUMBER!" :p
