I just bought a Gateway P-6831 for $800 at my local Best Buy, and was wondering about putting in a P8600 1066mhz fsb CPU. Does the P6831 support a 1066mhz FSB, or will it be forced to 800?

Thanks

Man you are using so many numbers I am getting confused! Alright as far as I know "dynamic switching" started with Santa Rosa so think it will also work with Montevina. The FSB will clock up if that is the question?

I could be wrong but the chipset does support. Oh and not on the chipset it does, that is fact!

No, as stated, it has to be an 800 FSB cpu..

I installed a 2.5 ghz T9300 in my P-6831 FX.

They said it PM965 only supports 800Mhz FSB. It is socket P. You can upgrade to say T7800 or X7800 or X7900 if the cooling system can handle the higher TDP of the X. T8300 is likely the best choice.

Gotcha. I ended up digging (and I mean digging.. man they sure make it hard to get to!) out my Vostro T7300 and putting it in the P-6831FX. Now if anyone wants to buy a Vostro 1500 with a T5450.... (actually its a good mate to the 8600m GT because the CPU is not the bottleneck)

Rather than start a whole new thread, anyone know the max speed the motherboard supports for ram? Have one coming soon, thinking of upgrading that aspect.

Do a search, both here at [H], and on the net itself.

There's a lot written about this model laptop. Probably more than any other laptop out there.
