There are concerns about the US National Archives’ ability to store all of the data from the outgoing Bush administration. Archive officials estimate that there is 50 times the amount of electronic data to store compared to the previous Clinton administration and are facing capacity issues.

In their plan, archives officials wrote, the transition poses “unique challenges” because of the huge volume of electronic records, some of them in “formats not previously dealt with.”

I dunno, he uses an mp3 player and knows how to sync it, so I'm sure he has some idea. Does any country's leader really need to know though? Do you need to know how your intestines absorb nutrients in order for you do your daily activities? Not really.

Do we really want to save it? It would be embarrassing to remember just how inept the man was!

omg lolololol

Yes, because all that data is about the president and what you disliked about his actions.

Expectations are that Bush(43) might leave around 100 TB of data for the archives.

So basically a TB a month.

Seriously 100TB is a problem to store? Thats not even one full rack with backups. I can understand that properly indexing all that data for easy retrieval might pose some problems that they havent come across, but thats a pretty thin reason.

Stories like this are exaggerated by the media and posted on [H] to stir up conflict. Storing the data is no problem, and indexing it is no problem. Let the flame war and Bush bashing being..

Heh - that's because Bill and Hill shredded most of the evidence! :D

They need a few of those "500TB portable drives" like the ones used in Die Hard 4 to hold the entire gamut of the financial and personal records of the United States... in a backpack, basically. ;)

ahaha. Transferring at 50TB per minute over USB = FTW!!! :D :p

Right, because all we do is post political stuff for you to post     about.

Get over yourself. It's about the challenge the National Archives has with indexing and storing all of the data that accumulated over Bush's administration, which has to do with the evolution of technology, not the content.

Actually, political stuff gets posted here all the time.

As for indexing, data collected by the US government is already meta tagged and indexed as it's collected, so it won't be some ginormous task as a New York Times wants us to believe it is. The only major task will be taking all the data from various departments and centralizing it all in one location. When it comes to the government, that's one thing they're terrible at.. centralizing resources. That's one of the reasons homeland security was created, but that turned out to be a complete joke.

I fail to see what the challenge is to be honest. 100TB for the government really shouldn't be a big deal. I mean how the hell does ADVISE or STARLIGHT get stored?

Personally I think this is just overblown political tripe.

100 TB is BS. If what we know about the NSA is even remotely true, everybodies data the past 8 years is gonna take TONS.

QFT... The media owns this country.

well we could bash cheney for being an evil, slimy, motherfuckin piece of shit excuse for a sewer rat

Of course, Mr. Cheney, always the Good Citizen, tried to help out when he 'asserted this month in a court case that he had absolute discretion to decide which of his records are official and which are personal, and thus do not have to be transferred to the archives.'

I can't wait for the transparency the Obama Administration is going to bring. If it's anything like his lifelong associations and world of media denial, it's going to be awesome.

NONO, lets instead look at this as yet another excuse to demand more money due to incompetent foresight on the part of some government administrative. I mean, in my house, I have well over a TB of storage. That includes every paper written by me AND my wife AND my kids during their time in school/college.

If I could see it, why can't someone that is PAID to see it see it? WTF... government jobs are seen as entitlement. They need to be accountable, make those assclowns pay for it, yet they'll probably get a promotion to oversee the 'new new ITdeal' , and we'll be sitting looking for a job.

At least you'd know where the money would go unlike those $200 billion from the bank bailout stash.

I blame Al Gore for not making better storage in addition to the internet.

Read between the lines....new formats nto previously dealt with. /tinfoil hat

The Bush adminstration created a new way to hide mp3's from the RIAA!
