looking to do one final graphics card upgrade after christmas looking at the 9800GTX+ for $170@newegg wondering if my current process will be a bottle neck
playing games like GTA4 Farcry 2 CS1.6 hehe(might be a big strain):p and others

Maybe a bit, it should run fine.

it actually is quite a large bottleneck. I recently replace that exact CPU with an intel E7200 overclocked to 3.6ghz. I literally doubled my average FPS @ 1680x1050. Oh and I have an 8800gts G92 @790/1854/1075 not much different than a 9800gtx+.

of course this is all REALLY dependent on the resolution hes gaming at but it still will be CPU bottleneck and I dare say quite drastically.

I am not saying upgrade CPU first, but it should be the next thing on your list after GPU.

oh my old 3800+ was at 2.8ghz 24/7.

My FPS saw a big boost from a 4200 X2 @ 2.7GHz to a E8400 stock with a 8800 GTS 512. It still out did the 7900 GT SLI I had at the time though.

As long as it is playable, you should be fine, maybe with a faster CPU you could get 80fps instead of 40fps average. You know that your GPU is capable for more so you can turn on more eye candy such as more AA.

you would be better off with a faster gpu for far cry 2. i can tell im super gpu limited when i play that, the game doesnt really throw alot at the cpu.
for gta4, your just screwed lol. that game kicks corei7 & gtx 280 ass.

i went from pentium [email protected] ( slower than your x2) to a q6600@3ghz( roughly a factor of 5 times faster than that pentium d) back when i had a 7800gtx and i noticed no difference in games. however, i was able to reencode 18 seasons of the simpsons in hours rather than days.

HL and CS games shouldn't be an issue, I regularly get into the 100s with HL2:E2/E1 games, probably avg atleast 60fps at 1600x1200 max all except AA (don't need AA at that res on my 22" CRT).

I read that GTA4 is just a strain on CPU's even quad cores.

If you game at 1280x1024 you will be even more limited by the CPU.

If you can wait for some deals on the GTX 260, I paid 184.38 for mine, then have a 20MIR after that which hasn't arrived yet. Although the deal is dead, I'm sure there will be more.

GTA4 is gonna be a no go for you buddy.
I went from a am2 5000+ 64x2 @2.6ghz to a E8400 @3.6ghz and boy o boy what a difference.

I can now play crysis at very high with 30 fps compared to my old rig which was on medium at 30fps
Go ahead and upgrade your gpu but you need a cpu upgrade soon.

Try to find someone who is trying to sell their gpu.Or just get a 9600gt to hold you over until you get a new cpu

Spend the extra $30

You'll need to move to AM2/LGA 1366 shortly however, as you'll be feeling those low framerates in newer titles. Source engine stuff, etc. Probably won't run bad at all. Full DX10 titles...probably not so good.

a couple of games out there will be pretty sluggish but at least he is not running at even slower stock cpu speeeds. Far Cry 2 will be playable but the minimum framerates will be low quite often. from what I have seen for GTA 4 cpu benchmarks it wont be pretty.
