Since this is the gaming section I'd figure it would b a good place to ask about what headset I should get for gaming. What would you guys recommend that is in the price range of <$50 or around it?

Its a little expensive but if you plan on using them daily you might consider an aviation headset. You will need to get a converter probably.

BTW I do not use my aviation headset for gaming, but my aviation headset is VERY comfortable. And I wear it for hours on end when I am flying.

I have a Creative Fatality, by FAR the best headphones I've ever owned. They're incredibly comfortable and can feel the comfort even after many gaming hours.

The microphone is also incredibly clear.

I have this version, which is not USB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826158051, costs $45.99

There is also a USB version here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826158070 but it costs $69.99

I would HIGHLY recommend the non-USB version. Very affordable and epic quality. For some reason the USB version is getting horrible reviews on Newegg, too. Not sure why.

My only complain is that it's cable is a bit short, mine is 2.5-3 feetish. Depending on where your computer is, it could be short

Good to great audio quality, there are better audio quality ones out there though. I also use them for Skype and Ventilo. The mic is good, never had anyone complain about the way I sound.

They are also pretty durable and they don't make my head hurt when I wear them. I also have a set of these for work.

Audio 4 of 5
Mic 5 of 5
Comfort 5 of 5

Why not post this in the audio section where you can get audiophile help much easier?

Anyways JVC HA-RX700 + the Zalman Clip on Mic are well within your budget, around $45 shipped for the both.

I broke my Creative Fatalties. They were nice, but not nice enough for me to buy them again for 60 bucks.

I picked up Edimensional Audiofx Force Feedback headset instead for about 15 bucks less. User reviews were good on them and i was like, eh why not. They are nice and comfortable, moreso than the fatalities, and the FFB is pretty neat feature actually.
Sound is clear, microphone is clear.

Give these a look.I believe they are the ones that I have. I haven't used them in a few months, as my wife has me busy remodeling the kitchen. One thing I liked is that it came with a USB adapter so you could go USB or use the standard audio jack on your sound card.

Personally, I like the USB. I played MMORPGs, and it was nice to let the game come out of my speakers and have the voices for people I was speaking with in ventrilo in my headset. With a USB headset, you can do that becuase you technically have two sound cards at that point. It's all preference, but with these you can actually try out USB -- if you don't like it, you don't have to buy another headset, you just remove the adapter.

Ouch, I had a pair of those for my work laptop. The sound was middling and they were horribly uncomfortable. My head hurts just thinking about them. I also found the behind-the-head strap very annoying.

But yes, unless you're an audiophile, I like USB headsets for ease-of-use.

Fatality headsets are very comfortable and have pretty good sound (with weak bass). If you can get them for under 40 they are a good deal. Not worth 50 or 60 though IMO. They do start to get a bit ugly over time though. The little ruberization stuff on the head band is starting to peel on mine.

Did Icemat sell out the Siberia to Steel Series... because I have the Siberia headset but it was made by Icemat Audio instead.

Awesome quality sound and really comfortable... although people around you will be annoyed because the vents let the sound disperse from the headset.

Ya, i just ordered Creative FATAL1TY on newegg for $45 with free shipping so it is actually under 40 if there wasn't free shipping. Found it to be a good price/quality ratio, hopefully I made a good choice.

What rubber? There's no rubber anywhere on my set.

Maybe you had a different version? I saw two versions, one was the one I linked, and sometime ago I saw another one that was supposedly better, they were much bigger and a lot more ugly, maybe those had rubber somewhere.

The one I have only has soft cloth on the earpads and on the top between your skull and the headband (I don't know what those are called :p)

For the premium you'd pay for the branding on a set of "gaming" headphones you could instead get some good ones. I like my ATH-900s an awful lot, but if you're set on having g4m3r cans the Icemat Siberias have incredible sound and are very comfortable.

But only if you have Monster cables to go with them.

From what I understand the Astros are highly regarded especially the mixamp included, not sure why you are comparing them to MONSTER products... Do you have any personal experience with them? Probably not...

Lighten up. It was a joke. But you have to admit they look a little overpriced.

BTW have you ever tried Monster cables... probably not. :)

heh, actually unfortunately when i was young and naive I fell for the "monster is better" line, i have since learned to love monoprice cables for 1000% less and just as good IMO

If you're looking for a competitive edge in MP, check out the Steelseries 4H. It enhances spatial details for better positioning in FPS games, but when listening to music the exaggerated higher frequencies reveal artifacts in compressed audio, though this can be mitigated by use of an equalizer. Aside from this it produces quality playback. It is a set of very comfortable circumaural cans with a retractable mic. If you like more boom in your games, the Steelseries 3H performs better at this and is foldable to boot. For more balanced sound overall, look at the Sennheiser PC151 or an a la carte setup like the MDR-V6 with a Zalman clip-on mic.

From what I have read in that price range the best bang for your buck is going to be the following.http://www.amazon.com/Koss-sb45-SB-45-Communication-Stereophones/dp/B00081A2CW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1229538690&sr=8-1

Also there are the Koss sb49 however I don't know how those stack up against the 45's.

I've had the 45's for over a year, the warranty is great ( had to replace once).
They feel sorta bulky, but not enough to turn me away from them. Great for long gaming, and good quality sound too.

I have the Fatal1tys and I really like them and would definitely buy them again, though only at the price I paid. (they were like $30 on sale at Fry's)

If you can wait until jan 09 , wait for Razer Megalodon
Looks impressive by the specs, although 7.1 channels and integrated DSP might make it a bit more costly than the OP's limit of $50 :p Even without cost in question, I'd still go for the Sennheiser PC350 because I don't particularly care for multi-channel headphones. Though I know Razer makes good hardware so I'm open minded about their upcoming headset.

OP, not a bad choice. I was deciding between those and the ones I ended up buying on Monday, the eDimensional Audio FX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836504001 but I bought them from here http://www.provantage.com/edimensional-edi-100~7EDIM001.htm Provantage has been a nice competitor for Amazon and Newegg when I'm shopping for computer and electronic gear.

For those still looking for a headset.

Plantronics, I've been though a lot of headsets over the past 5 or so years. I thought Plantronics were a given but found that they broke easily so I quit buying that brand. Logitech, they work but not much else can be said for them other than middle of the road quality. The best I've had so far (haven't had time to test out my eDimensionals yet) were Sennheiser, sorry I forget the model.

The above opinion is based on headsets that cost $50 or less so I can't speak for say a Logitech or Plantronics model that costs $100.
