I was just wondering if anyone knows when the AF-S version of this lens is coming out?

The current version will not auto focus on the D40 but I have heard that there is the newer AF-S version in the works.

Also, would anyone know the price on it?

personally, i doubt Nikon will release one for a while (if at all). why don't you just pick up the f/1.4 AF-S?

Ok I found it, 4x as much for auto focus?

Would it be wise to buy the AF or should I get the AF-S version of the 1.4 50mm?

You have to get the AF-S version for it to AF, otherwise you will need to manually focus.

the difference between 1.4 and 1.8 is DOF. and with 1.4 you have a slight advantage in low light (2/3 of a stop; not a whole lot, but it's always something). also, the bokeh is better with 1.4, but that's debatable. i own the 1.4 and i never looked back. i love the lens.

edit: what Joves said. get AF-S for autofocus.

this is one expensive hobby

(I wonder what I got myself into lol)

I know what you mean Sir, some of those lenses cost $4k, or even $7k.

After I get bored with the kit lens I'm either going to get one of these:

  • Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-S (when the price comes down from $440)
  • Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (only $140 for a refurb)

^it won't be long before you start saving up for those $1.5k lenses (14-24, 24-70, 70-200) ;)

happy shooting :D

35mm on a DX camera is what 50mm is on FX. it's the "human eye" lens, or however you want to call it. i haven't used it personally, but every review of this lens i can find basically boils down to this: a great lens. at $300 it's hard to pass that up. i'd say go for it, if you feel you need it.
