The governor of New York has proposed a tax on digitally delivered entertainment services to generate revenue for his state. Lovely. What ever happened to cutting spending?

Trying to close a $15.4 billion budget gap, Paterson called for 88 new fees and a host of other taxes, including an "iPod tax" that taxes the sale of downloaded music and other "digitally delivered entertainment services." "We're going to have to take some extreme measures," Paterson said Tuesday after unveiling the slash-and-burn budget.

In these tough economic times I have learned to watch my spending. There are several things that were nice to have or spend money on but are not really needed maybe they should look at this concept. The whole idea of taxing for everything under the sun has got to stop. Maybe it would be different if we the people were actually getting something that we didn't have before. But the sad reality we are getting more do nothing government who's whole job anymore seems to waste our money.

Don't these people realize that people are just about "Extreme Measured" out ?

If they want to "stop" pirates downloading music. This is NOT it, it's only making it worst. (depends how much % is added to the .99) IMO.

Gotta love it when bureaucrats increase their own salaries even when there are budget cuts.

Sounds like something a democrat would do. Hmm... I wonder what Obama is going to do while he's in office.... but people keep voting for these idiots who want to increase budgets before decreasing spending. I just don't understand Americans anymore.

Let us lower taxes on income but raise it on everything else. Way to help the middle

Don't bring that shit here. Just let it rest for 4 more years.

Let's face it - NY is screwed. I'm hoping Paterson can find a way to fix the budget but taxing DL's isn't going to close that gap unfortunately.

What do you expect from a city run by Democrats? Of course your taxes are going to go up! It is their platform. Do they not even listen to their candidates speak or do they blind vote for whatever has a (D) after their names?

Don't like it? Vote for a Libertarian. (seeing as how there seems to be no real conservatives left in the Republican party anymore)

For each song taxed, those who have/will vote(d) for this receive a stabbing. We'll see how long this lasts.

of course they do. they want....More...Monay! What money? You know some of that internet monay.

It's getting about time to start throwing some tea ... err ipods into the harbor. All this taxing is outrageous.

Actually, his comments are correct and pretty mild. People get all upset about taxes being raised yet will vote back into office again and again the same assholes who raise these taxes.

If you don't like it, vote them out.

That's not the point of the tax. They want MORE money, that's it.

Things are getting so expensive here in the city :(

I guess I just dont get it, Utah has a surplus of money in their budget. earlier in the year they saw cut backs with taxes and had an emergency session to do cuts to match the available funds. we cut more than we actually needed to and now have a surplus.

it boggles my mid to think that states are so screwed up that they can manage their budgets. i hope you read this California/new York.

He also wants to tax barber shops, salons, and spas.

What hurts (but helps) New York is NYC.

I bet the labels will not be happy. Just as legal downloads are gaining momentum through Amazon, Itunes, cell phone, etc, you are going to start taxing them and kill the label's momentum???

Not gonna happen, my friends. Especially when most of the labels are located right in the heart of NYC.

On a side note, I love Amazon's mp3 store and highly recommend it!

Also proposed is a so-called "obesity tax" on non-diet soft drinks. The "iPod download" and online sales taxes are bad enough as simple money grabs, now they're proposing taxes that are supposed to be "good for us".

Of course, this is hardly new. NY was already in the process of turning into a nanny state.

They also want to tax sodas, donuts and jewlery btw. Lest we forget NY now tries to charge out of state etailers taxes.

At the same time, they are drastically reducing education, medical spending and public transit subsidies while increasing welfare spending. All while corruption is getting as bad as the 70s.

Albany/NYC gov, like many of its residents, are a pack of thieves.

Utah also has atleast 20 million less people to worry about and not as complicated infrastructure. Granted the people in charge are just raping us over here and I can't believe the people that continue to vote for these same people raping our pay checks.

Have to cut down on food budget by atleast 40 dollars just to be able to get to work and school every month. Damn MTA grrr

Yah that tax on non diet is gay, I am allergic to artificial sweeteners and am skinny....

Really? because that also meant that they have 20 million less PAYING taxes.

What do you consider complicated infrastructure? Utah has one if the best public transportation west of the Mississippi, as well as a great commerce and attraction to businesses.

I just dont buy that excuse, sorry. I am not saying that Utah should be a straight across the board comparison, just saying that somewhere there is some bunk spending/regulations in NY.

BTW students here ride public transit for free :) even part time ones

There isn't a tax increase a politician ever disliked. If I managed my budget the way states and the feds manage theirs, I'd be in jail. Why anyone lives in New York at this point is beyond me. Between Bloomberg acting like your mother and telling what to eat, drink, or not smoke, you then have Patterson coming up with nonsensical fantasies of separating you from your money. These fuckers didn't do dick to deserve your hard earned sweat equity and now they think they can nickel and dime you to death? Fuck them and anyone who let's them get away with it. I swear Singapore is looking better and better.

This is what happens when people bitch about having to pay taxes in general. Of course nobody wants to pay any taxes, but the fact is, we would live in a country with zero infrastructure if we didn't.

Instead of generic complaints, people should educate themselves on just exactly where all this tax money is going and focus on that. I, personally am sick of the phrase "cutting spending", as if the words themselves are some kind of cure-all.. I've heard those words from so many Republicans, and then watched them do nothing but increase spending, or just do nothing but watch from the sidelines as it happens.

So what exactly do people want cut? Do New Yorkers really want the state to stop plowing or salting roads after snowstorms? Or stop repairing potholes? Or is "cutting spending" really just a euphemism for "let the poor starve to death in the streets and throw their bodies into the local dumps"? Whatever people feel, complaining about taxes and just saying "cut spending" isn't going to get a damn thing done.

Of course there is alot of bad management and many terrible decisions for quite a while now when dealing with taxes. I don't know much about Utah but is there a subway system in place that is over a hundred years old, handles 8+ million riders a day and costs millions to run a day? There are other places around the world with subways but NY has a pretty bad one now that takes alot to maintain.

Now lets add corrupt workers unions around the city, people not wanting taxes, not enough teacher because they know they'll be abused by the system and you got one messed up state! Granted we don't get disasters that would cost so much more in one swoop.

I just can't believe people rather want to put an extra buck in their pocket and let the pieces fall apart later on.

It is the case of power corrupting. With the two parties in power we the people are screwed. As far as State/Federal government cutting spending there as so many ways to do that, with the amount of wasted money they blow. But as usual their only conclusion is we need to raise more taxes. If they even froze spending it would help, to them that would be cutting services but, in reality it would be more in line with the general populace, who are frozen in their spending at the momment. Killing the cost of living increases to salaries would save untold amounts of money as well. The Feds asked it of the auto workers so, why not the State and Federal workers. Seems fair to me. Personally I think all politicans should be getting $1 a year till they fix the economy that they helped screw up.
It does not surprise me the NY is one of the states leading the way to tax anything online. The next thing they will start to tax you for the information you get off the net or, for everytime you log on. Obama is going to be helping the poor out by proposing a tax on coal. Dont see a problem with that, wait until your electric bills shoot up. Why do you think there are all of these new ads demonizing the coal industry. Welcome to change. You better start saving yours now.

Those are just taxes you can believe in. Believe people, believe. Hope and change is all you'll have left.

ffs iam so sick of useless government cocksuckers demanding money to do absolutley fuck all and then spend that money bailing out banks or giving themselfs a payrise

and the worst thing is people just sit by and cop their assfucking with a smile

THIS. I thought NY had a great pair attempting to tax out of state purchases. This tax on music downloads can only lead to worse things, ie gives other states bad ideas.

"What ever happened to cutting spending?"

What planet are you living on? The sheep in this country think voting for people like McCain and Obama are good for this country, and both would/will spend even more. That's right morons, if you voted for Obama you voted for increased spending, not spending we can afford either, but spending that will require increased taxes, increased borrowing, more printing of money by the Federal Reserve, you get the idea. Bush touted smaller government but we all know how that turned out.

Until the clueless populous gets an inkling of education and thinks for themselves just a tiny bit criminals will continue to run this country. We are bankrupt and things are only going to get worse.
