A Japanese engineer has built a self-balancing robot table that can even deliver food and play some irritating beep music. Check out the video to see this thing in action. Funky.

Lol. I am really amazed at its ability to not only balance by itself, but to be able to balance when people are removing and setting objects on it.

Maybe the faster it moves, the more times it would have to poll its sensors per second?

oh man the possibilities with this invention...imagine getting rid of shitty waiters who don't bring you food and drinks on time. all you'd need is an touchscreen menu/ordering system at each table and your food automatically comes out and brings refills or food as needed.

But why? That is what I want to know.

Are we getting so jaded that a three legged robot simply doesn't cut it anymore?

Seems to me this is a solution to something that isn't a problem.

That is slick!

It's s stepping stone for better things for sure!

Balance is a wonderful thing try standing without you balance in your inner ear, and you will respect it, being man made and all.

man that thing would need just a little wetspot and it would slip flat on its face, wouldnt it?

brings a whole new meaning to honey bring me a beer. Now it's table bring me a beer....

KM

That thing would not get along with me.

My foot + stiff robot = pure embarrassment :D

Sometimes I think I'm cursed. Or gifted?

Couldn't you just give it four legs and eliminate the need for balancing sensors/programming?

Or is this merely an application into bigger, better, balance related things in robotics?

Why?.... why not just add a 3rd wheel (with a small tripod-like base) and make it stable!!?

Then work on the software to navigate between tables, take orders, & then deliver individual plates to the correct person at a given table.

I'm guessing its a "why not?" thing here. You COULD make one with 3 wheels but it isn't as cool. I'm figuring they'll be able to do it with one rollerball soon enough.

Why not add a 3rd leg?

Because, the robot was designed to solve the problem of balance, the waiter thing is just an application of the problem.

They didn't set out to make a waiter, they wanted to make a self balancing robot. The waiter aspect just happened to be a good application of the code.

2 legs meh. come back when its got 1 leg.

I've already seen balancing robots that work similarly with 2 wheels. This one seems to do it very well AND with changing loads, which I don't remember seeing in the past per se.

Freaky, this has alot of potential....but why are the legs so blingy??? All its missing are some mini-spinners! :D
