Quick question guys...

I just got the the Ultra 120 Extreme heatsink. Just wondering how much do I screw it down. Do I tighten the screws till they wont turn anymore? Or do I just make them "snug."

Thanks...im just afraid to OVER tighten...unless thats a good thing

I tighten them till the mobo actually starts to bend upward ever-so-slightly. If you've ever put a stock cooler on the same thing will happen, and was designed to do so.

Yeah, I know what you mean..I was just concerned with the weight of this cooler being an issue not to go too tight.

IIRC, the thermalright mounting kit has self stopping screws right? So you would just turn it till it can't anymore. I would wait on another members input though as I can't remember correctly and if you over tighten you can crush the CPU.

yeah thats what im afraid of...it LOOKS like the screws would just stop on thier own, but just want to make sure i cant go too far with them.

I just made mine fairly tight, then gave it an extra squeeze. The HSF was still able to twist above CPU when I gave it a firm nudge. Things seem fine and temperature is under control even with OC.

They're self stopping screws. So tighten them untill you hit the stops. You should know where that is because it goes, tight, tight, can't tighten unless I'm superman.

Ok great. Also, how should i mount the fan on this thing? should it blow cool air THROUGH the heatsink? Or should it blow AWAY from the HS taking the hot air away.

You want it to basically blow away from your components, usually that's toward the top or I/O port area fan/exhaust.

Well, yeah...mine will be blowing towards the rear...but i mean...which side of the HS do I mount it on? If looking at the the mobo with the I/O on the left....should it be mounted on the left side of the HS sucking the hot air from the HS and blowing it out the rear? Or should it be on the RIGHT side blowing air THROUGH the HS and then out the rear.

Like this...

rear Exhaust fan <-------- Fan <---------Hatsink

Or this....

rear Exhaust Fan <--------Heatsink <----------Fan

Thanks!
Jim

Heres a pic of my old setup to give you an idea (albeit with 2 fans):)

If going with a single fan, mount it on the ram side of the heatsink to blow air through the fins to the rear of the case.
