Alright, so It's christmas time and I'll also be graduating so I'll be getting some help with a new lens.

So far I have

Canon Rebel XT
Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM (I got this for $50!!)
Canon EFS 55-250mm IS
Canon EFS 18-55mm (Kit Lens)

I was looking at the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM but I'm not sure.

I don't want to go past $800 or $900 really. I just take random pictures when I'm out, but I want to be able to cover most types of image ranges.

Maybe I should get a nice flash instead? What do you guys think I should go for?

Well, if you get the 10-22 you are set from wide to modest long telephoto. Take a look at the Tokina 11-16 F2.8.

Check this comparison.

Also, if you don't need the Wide....

Actually screw it, get a couple 580EX II's or 1 X 580EX II and 1 430EX II. You can get very creative with two flashes.s

Well do you want new range in addition to what you have or to upgrade your most used range?

I think I want to extend my range first before I upgrade the 18-55 and the 55-250, the 50 seems to be a very decent lens.

I haven't been in the photo hobby long enough to know about or trust Tokina, are they a nice company?

Honestly I used to think 3rd party lenses were a bad choice. However with the advent of the internet and the massive amounts of information about different lenses I have reversed that decision and would purchase a 3rd party lens when I had enough information that deemed it good. The ONLY caveat is that all 3rd party lenses are reverse enginered, and can sometimes not work with your body or future bodies. Sometimes they can be rechipped, but if at all possible try the lens on your body (your should do that anytime you can, unless buying online) and make sure it works. Only Canon lenses are certified to work with your body. You also have to know that thousands of people have bought these lenses for their camera's with no problems.

I don't think you need more lenses, except a 50mm 1.8 as it's so inexpensive for what you get it would be a great indoor portrait lens. However I really think you need to get a dedicated flash or two. If I regret anything it's not having two flashes (One 580EX II and my 430EX). My next purchase is a 580EX II, if that means anything to you.

Cheers,

I have the 10-22 and think it is a great lens. But it is not really a everyday random picture lens. I would look at getting some good glass such as the 24-70 or 24-105. The Canon 18-200 IS is pretty good, and people seem to like the Tamron 18-270 OS.

I really do need some flashes but I don't do a whole lot of indoor stuff, although I know they are affective outdoors also. I really think I could have fun with the 10-22 and I could then upgrade my midrange after that.

what range do you use most with the kit lens?
My suggestion would be either the 17-55 or the 24-105, dependant on which portion of the kit lens you use most (18-24mm vs 24-55mm regions).
If you find yourself shooting at 18 because you cant go wider, the 10-22 might be a good option. But don't get it just because you "think" you want wider (and its an EF-S).

Id get a flash if you dont have one. But that depends on how much you will really use one or, if you find yourself in situations where you need one. Onboard flashes suck as a general rule.

Yeah I would get a flash, even a used one would be good. A used 580EX II would be my first suggestion, if not that a new 430ex II would be my second...

The flashes are much cheaper, I may just get that for my self after the holiday season :p

The EF-S 10-22mm is really neat. Very light and fast. It distorts like a mofo at 10, but you can pull off some cool portraits and such ...
