Help with 24 port switch

I am looking for a quiet 24 port switch. I have a Netgear GSM7324, and the noise is just too much. However, nearly all of the 24 port switches that I have looked at online have a fan built in.

Are there any 24 port switches that do not have a fan? If I have no choice but to get one with a fan, are there any that do not sound like an airplane.

This will go into a bedroom, which has my server, so some fan noise is ok, but nothing like the Netgear.

HP 1800-24G. I have a few of them and they work great for the price. They also have no fan.

Just build a wooden box for it and keep it inside the box :p
with a 120mm fan to ventilate it.

Is there anyway to know? This seems to be a great switch.
Dunno; when we first got this a year+ ago it was loud enough to be annoying.

When we were finally able to drop it into the networking rack, we were happy.

On HP's website it indicates that it has no fan. What part number do you have? J9028B is listed on HP's website.

I stopped using my 3com 10/100 switch (38 port) because it was both a tad bit noisy and apparently even idle makes a good space heater. Anyone in the austin area want it? $20... come on anyone?

You could always call the manufacturer sales line or a company that resells it and see if the have the db rating of the fan. Or you can [H]void the warranty and put in a quieter fan.

I put my switch in the garage so I don't care how load it is.

My initial plan was to place my server and networking into my garage, but there were a few things that concerned me:

1. Heat: I live in a single story house, and the garage has no insulation. I live in southern california, and in the summer the temp in my garage should get close to 90F with zero ventilation. I don't think my equipment would last very long in that environment.

2. Space: We have a two car garage, and we park two cars in there. There was some space for me to place a server rack, but then there was so much junk there which my family refused to get rid of.

In the end, the only choice I had was to place it in my computer room inside the house. The server case (Norco 4020) does make noise, but the Netgear switch was louder.

Might depend on the model; we have one and it has a rather annoying fan.

The newer model doesn't have a fan and actually runs very cool. My HP 2900-24G's which do have a fan (a semi-loud one) actually run warmer too.

thanks for the input.

I placed an order for the HP 1800-24G switch. It was $100 more than what I was looking to spend, but it has more features and is fanless.

And it's happy up to 104 degrees, so if your garage only gets up to 90, you can put it in there!

I received the switch yesterday, and set it up today. Great recommendation, it is absolutely silent. The only thing I can hear now is my server. It is also perfect for my needs, since I know that I won't even use most of the features it has.

Thanks again everyone!

Next up is finding a nice rack for my server, and soon to be backup server. Is it okay if I ask for a recommendation in this section of the forum.

Good to hear and as said above, check Craigslist. I picked up my 42U APC rack for 200 bucks.

Agreed. Craigslist. I bought a ~24 rack which turned out to be rebranded by compaq and made by the same company that made my 42u. I bought it and resold it since All i wanted was the 1u keyboard + drawer. I paid $150 and sold it for $125 or so.

just a thought why not put the switch some where that you wont hear it all of our switches are in a room in racks and hell yes they are all loud but we all dont work in that room.

Because he got a switch that is most likely as good or better than what you have and doesn't have/need a fan?

ew i sense a little sarcasm and bitterness. we have 35 switches here homie and all are cisco's if you want model numbers let me know

10 x Catalyst 3500 series XL inline power <----these not that great but they still work
10 x Catalyst 3750 E series <---------These are way good
1 x Catalyst 4900 series <----------This is the champ

oh and my bad there not all cisco 14 of em are dlinks

14 x DGS-3100-48p in three stacks<----------and these were bought to save money but cli is damn near cisco almost so close you cant tell its a d-link

first stack is 6 switches
second stack is 6switches
last stack is 2

o wait i forgot one our bonded t1 back up runs on a cisco 2811 but i wouldn't actually call it a switch its more of a router than anything

Not bad, we just picked up $120K in Cisco gear and $180K in HP gear to upgrade a few sites.
