I've read numerous L4D threads and no where did I read anyone mention this.

How come on the system requirement on the back of the box doesn't list Internet Connection?

I decided to buy the retail box yesterday so I didn't have to download it from Steam. Little did I know all that was on the disc was just Steam and that I still had to download the game!!!!!

What happens for the people who bought the game to play single player with no internet connection?

You had to DL the game even after buying the hard copy?

That's kind of ridiculous

So wait, you had a full DVD-Rom with just the steam install file on it? I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be the case...

I'm pretty sure the gold version of the game is on the disc...it would only connect to the internet to register that you own the game, and then download the latest update to start playing.

IIRC the steam client itself can fit on a floppy disc (or almost fit anyway). if they're wasting a disc on that then they're beyond retarded. you might as well not even bother selling the retail box and just selling a gift card like thing that gets activated at the register and you scratch off the back for the game key. meh what a waste.

I'm fairly certain that the game data is all on the disc. Of course, you'll need to connect to the Internet to register the game before you can play it.

Regardless, an Internet connection is required, and should be listed as a system requirement. The Internet just seems like such a gimme though in 2008. In fac tthe average user does nothing BUT use the Internet on their computer.

Exactly! I had to post and ask this because this just doesn't make sense to me at all. I really want to know what would happen for the people who has no internet and willing to buy the game for offline single player mode.

Its definitely not listed. I bought 3 copies and I've looked everywhere on each box!

There's also nothing inside the box, no instructions book, or anything. Not that its important for an instruction book but all it has is a card telling you to follow the instructions if autoplay is not activated on your computer.

The disc shows 6.58 gb and I'm sure Steam is much much MUCH less than that.

i had bought the retail box copy because i preordered it at gamestop and i traded in some games for it. All the game data is on the disc you just need an internet connection to decrypt the installtion files. Thats it !!!

Why wouldn't there be more instructions? In fact, after Steam was installed and I logged on, I went to activate my cd key and it starts downloading the game for me. No where did it ask me to install the game from disc.

That still doesn't explain why internet connection was not listed as system requirement.

How much is it downloading? It could be decrypting, or it could just be downloading the latest updates, which would only be a few megs. I was certain it installs Steam as the first part of the process, but then installs most fo the content from the disc.

Was a mouse and keyboard listed as a requirement also?

I bought a retail copy and this what happens. If you do not have steam installed, first you must install it and create an account. Once thats done, auto-run the CD and it will copy all the files. Then you must use the key to unlock and decrypt the files via steam OVER the net. Simple and easy.

Ah that explains it! Thanks! I did not auto-run the cd...

"Activate a game on Steam" just puts the game in your steam games list and allows you to download the game onto your computer.

But it is required to play the game either way, so it wouldn't matter if he was doing it so he could start a download, or just to register his copy as a valid game and install off the disc.

If the disc is listing 6.9Gb or whatever it is then the game files are on there, L4D is about 7Gb approx so they've shipped the files on the disc. I think what you'll find is that the steam install is seperate from the game install, in that you need steam installed first before you can install the game.

Run the disc again and look for an installer file that isn't steam, once you've installed the game you will need to connect online to download the patches through steam, or you can right click the game and set the properties to never update in which case you should be good to go, dump steam into offline mode and you wont need to connect to play your singleplayer games (IIRC)

I know you think you're being clever, but a keyboard is assumed because a keyboard is needed to boot up the PC with, most motherboards wont boot if they dont detect one, internet connections may be ubiquitous but not everyone has an internet connection thats just a FACT and for some people its not for the want of trying, some areas just cant get highspeed broadband and with games getting towards 7gb like L4D I think you can do the maths on downloading that over something like a 56k modem.

If an internet connection is REQUIRED it should be listed, I dont think theres anything unreasonable about that.

On the back of my case it says
Notice: Product offered subject to your acceptance of Steam agreement. You MUST activate the product via the internet, blah blah blah blah.

So I would assume internet is required based by reading that.

It does, on the back of the box....

You can activate over 56k. Activating and downloading are two completely different things.

I agree with the OP.
