DigiTimes, citing anonymous industry sources, claims that NVIDIA will support Atom processors in its MCP79 chipset. The article states that NVIDIA's MCP79 chipset will be the first to support Intel’s Atom processor but only for netbooks.

Intel and Nvidia will join forces to enable Nvidia chipset support to the Atom platform in order to enhance graphics performance, according to sources at PC vendors. Nvidia's MCP79 chipset will be the first to support Atom CPUs, however the support will only apply to nettops during the initial period.

Note that this says "nettops", not "netbooks". Nettops are desktop versions of netbooks.

this is utterly retarded since Intel said that the Atom was not designed for personal computers, but smaller scale devices like PDAs and internet appliances. I hate when techonolgy companies try to shoehorn fad processors...it's never good for the consumer.

I would agree, but.... How cool would this be if it worked out so that we can do more graphically intensive things on said devices?

So wait...

The customer is going to suffer from this increase of competition? How is it POSSIBLY bad for Nvidia to create a chipset to compete with Intel.

Seriously, explain to me how competition is going to raise prices...

On a chipset level, it's fine, but injecting more underperforming CPUs into a marketspace they don't belong is MADNESS!

?

its the netbook market. its not like its gonna be some damn desktop replacement as soon as these come out. frankly we need to see more power efficient chipsets since the current one consumes more power than the processor itself.

What the hell is the point of an Atom processor in a NetTop (small desktop) like the article mentions? Atoms are great when size, battery, and cooling (as an indirect result of size) is an issue. A low wattage Celeron is a simpler, more powerful solution for a NetTop box. Maybe Intel is getting rid of the Celeron line in the near future?

On the NetBook side, a low wattage Nvidia integrated graphics chipset would be amazing to pair with a Dual Core Atom. Stuff it in a 10" NetBook frame with half decent SSD, and you got yourself a tiny multimedia and casual gaming solution.

After what nvidia pulled with via's nano, I'm not believing anything till I see an actual product that I can buy, and it better be better than the current stuff. Else it's just stock pump.
