Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB $199AR

Yeah, pricey but so fantastic. Increases the speed and deals with the major issues of the earlier raptors (heat, noise). Great deal at $200.

This thing is so tempting. I've been planing to rig my main system to a small form factor without compromising speed and the drives are the next thing I need to upgrade.

In for one. Selling my 150GB to a friend for $150, I just got it about a couple of weeks ago.

Really not that great. Prices will be dropping and with SSD

Some guy posted on another forum that they a revision of these raptors. Im not sure if this is the old or new one. He said he bought 3 of these and all 3 failed so..... bleh. GL

Wow that was a lame post man. Seriously. It IS a great deal - best one yet. It IS the fastest SATA drive out right now, and if you really knew anything about SSDs, you would not have made such an ignorant comment. There is only 1 firmware version circulating out there and it's good. Your friend is doing something wrong. I've got a total of 7 VRs in different sizes, and they're all fast, and solid. No issues. Sheesh.

check the newegg customer reviews for the VR. there are quite a few failures mentioned.

that said, i've been running 74GB and 150GB Raptors for 5 years and have not had a failure yet. when i upgrade to i7, i'll be going with VRs, unless there's a substantially better (and reasonably priced) performance option.

people who writes review for newegg customer section is either
1. pissed about product
2. extremely happy with product
3. product is defective

point is no.1 reason for writing that up review is that they have problem

1.5TB was going for $120. $104 even if you want to deal with cashback

but,

this is the best deal I have seen on the VR

Yeah, and you forgot about the people who will rate a product without even owning it...

I look at Newegg reviews sometimes to find out if there's a recurring issue with a particular product, but you should take a LOT of them with a grain of salt. Many people on there who claim a tech level of "High" don't know their ass from a hole in the ground and give the products unjust reviews. A prime example is a guy who gave a really nice external enclosure 1 star because it didn't work with his GLFS VelociRaptor. So the product deserves the lowest rating because he didn't do his research before buying? Seems a bit unfair to give that company's product a low score because WD chose not to put the power/data connectors in the standard position... And the guy claimed a tech level of "High"? Riiiight.

gotta love raptors my 150gb one hasnt failed on me or errored most of those 500gb WD drive seem to have Smart errors and fail alot. had a new one failed in a week. even the extrernal one got alittle screwy. but when i get the extra cash im buying this its fast and reliable

Man I so want one of these! If I wasn't getting ready to buy a new car, I'd be all over this. (I'm getting a Mitsubishi Lancer GTS for any other owners out there. PM me and let me know how you like it)

FYI you can pick one up on ebay after 30% cashback on live for around $168 or something. No rebates needed. :p
