There are much better things for Kyle to spend limited time and resources on. WOW is the new D&D. I think we as a community should distance ourselves from anything wow related. Let this franchise go to the console.

when i played the trial the new draw distance killed FPS for me, i had to lower it on a 4850 stock.

I've always been impressed with how the WoW engine can scale, from pushing the limits of a modern setup on max settings to being extremely forgiving with lesser settings. I run it on my main rig in my sig, but also occasionally on my Old laptop with a Pentium-M 1.4, 1.5Gb PC2100, and a Mobility Radeon 9200 64Mb. I put all the settings at minimum and run at 1280x800 but it is very playable for trips, etc (even after WK).

I would love to see an article about this game.

the new graphics people are talking about with lich king only in the new areas? I just started playing again casually, I am just a low level in burning crusade starting area and it looks the same as it always has and runs smooth as can be.

How old is WoW now? No, I don't think any review time should be wasted on it.

Yes, the textures and models are improved in the new content. The old content is the same, however, you can increase the draw distance and enable dynamic shadows (which is an improvement for the older content).

This is like saying Crysis Warhead shouldn't be reviewed because the original Crysis is old.The New WoW expansion pack came out a few weeks ago.

times must be tough for this company, they release an expansion which is just more of the same for money rather than just giving it away for free with a patch.
well, i guess its forgivable, its not like they have a huge player base and charge a monthly fee or anything.

Mmm, not quite. They made bold claims about improving the performance of the engine (which was already pretty damn taxing, and still is) to all hardware out there. What does WoW do? That game can run on anything. I believe I saw my neighbor playing it on their toaster.

Are you serious? It should play smooth as can be on your system. SLI'd 260's on an i7 920. Yeeeeaaaah.

I don't play it anymore, but those I know that still do just turned shadows and draw distance down and it plays smooth as butter.

I don't feel there is a need for a new write-up on the game.

lol sli is not installed yet, just a single 260 atm. I am currently doing a wc setup and case mods etc. So have all these parts in an old case while I slowing get the project completed.

The recent graphics upgrade in WoW seems to be hammering video cards that used to play WoW with all settings maxed out with ease. Should HardOCP do a gameplay article to see how much video card is enough for the new WoW graphics?

If they do, I'd like to see particular emphasis on the budget cards (9600GSO, 9600GT, 9800GT vs 4670, 3870, 4830) since a lot of people spend thousands of hours playing this game at lower resolutions (like 1280x1024) than the usual hardcore gamers.

Unless you turn on the shadow quality to max , its the same graphics really and the shadow quality feature barely works.

Why do so many people bad-mouth Wow? Just because they like it too much and can't stop playing or something? I hear references to soul-sucking and such. What, would you rather have a game that you didn't want to play? I really doubt the people who designed WoW had any malicious intent, so I don't know why people would think it were evil. It is just a game. I bet If Wow weren't around, all the people who play it would just play something else. It isn't as if the people who play video games would just stop because Wow weren't around (I wouldn't anyway). Oh, and about the performance with the new expansion: I play it maxed out just fine. I have everything on as high as it will go and get at least 60 fps everywhere that I've seen. I had no idea that they had even done anything new with the graphics to tell the truth. :D

Desktop:
2.66GHz 9450
3GB RAM
GTX 280
Vista Ultimate 32bit

runs perfectly fine at 1900x1200 with everything on high

Laptop:
C2D 2.26GHz
4GB RAM
GeForce 9700GT 512MB
Vista Home Premium 64bit

Runs at 1680x1050 with everything on high except shadows (those are turned off), shadows are too much for the 128bit crippled memory bandwidth :(

or you know, its a good business model? wow is slightly updated though the majority of it is the same because people love it and are willing to pay more to have. if you remember star wars galaxy, a huge update actually ruined the games so its more 'if it isnt broken' situation.

im sorry that theyre not giving out a game for free. that however does not reflect the status of the company. think about it millions of players at 15 dollars a month = bank plus the expansion that also sold millions at 40 a pop = even more money. why would they as a company/business give up all that money... seriously.

I can't tell if the first sentence was sarcasm or not, though I can sense it in the second.

But times certainly aren't tough, and they've been making money hand over fist since the game was released. 2.8 million copies in 24 hours...

And graphics weren't really updated, it is mostly the same thing. There is some kind of issue with the shadow quality setting and it is crushing systems for some reason. If you turn it all the way down it will run the same as it always has.

there is a huge memory leak in one of the latest wow patches, i dont think they have patched it yet, it is the reason why WoW has been sluggish across the board, (same thing happend when patch 2.0 came out and brought pc's to their knees)

well whos fault is it? did the game put a gun to his head and say play me till you die? blaming the game is stupid, have some fing control.

that's the problem, most people who play this game don't have control and thats what happens. have you seen any other game (besides D&D) do that to someone? there have been tons of reports of people collapsing after going on insanely long binges of WoW.

i dont know how old you are, but i remember friends who would play counter-strike all day long (16+ hour sessions, but we still ate and stuff) it used to be fun, just that i cant play cs like that anymore, everybody only play's on dust2 and its ridiculously easy..

yea you're right, I would love to sit in my mom's basement and waste my days playing video games, but instead I contribute to society by working, paying bills, and other activities that take me away from my house so I do not become a complete drone. Yes you could argue, its mostly teenagers that do this all day and they don't have the responsibities I do yet. But you have to think, eventually they will be running our society, and I am sorry but that is scarier than Palin becoming a VP of the country, thank goodness she didn't.

I'm just wondering... where were their parents? Mine would never let me play games that long....

No doubt he'll have plenty of time to comtemplate your points while he waits at home for his government check to arrive.

keep telling yourself that, buddy.

or he really is. it is possible for people to play casually. seems like more and more people are hating wow cause its the cool thing to do.

dont forget, alot of people were hooked on halo for along time and still are. its not only wow.

20-hour WoW binge and died?

I've played WoW for 38 hours straight and I'm still alive. I stopped to heat food and use the bathroom (no showers).

Why?
I don't play WoW anymore, and I don't regret the time that I spent playing. It's rare to find a game that can keep me so entertained.

Ok, quick question, how old were you when you had this 38 hour binge?

22, it was earlier this year.
It wasn't really a binge either, I regularly spent over 24 consecutive hours playing. Which is why I find "Death after 20 hours" funny...

alot of wow bashing, trust me I am 27 and play wow at least 8 to 10 hours a week and I still work, have a job and a life. As for the graphics, there has been some improvements and trust me that game is awesome with a 30 inch LCD!

thats fine, 8 - 10 hours a week is the same amount of gaming I do. But binges of 10 hours straight or more is just ridiculous.

I weep for the future.
I'm on my final year for my computer engineering degree with consistently good grades.
So why, exactly, does playing WoW during my time off make me a bad person? You shouldn't be so quick to judge people based on WoW stereotypes.
