Antec Skeleton Open Air PC Case

Yea i am thinking somewhere like on a shelf above my desk once I get moved into a new place. something stable and wall mounted. Then I could dangle whatever I want off.

Kyle and gang we want to see a solid review of this case with some manhandling thrown in please. I want to know if you could (should you be of the occasion to need to.) carry a fully loaded chassis with one hand holding on to an ummm... rib?

Yeah me to. At first I was like Wow! Soon after though or the more I thought about it, it's not for me. Sonicly speaking I could handle it. But I'm a minimalist with maximum idea's so yeah ... not clean enough.

Personally I dont really like it but I do like that theyre branching out from standard designs.

Designer furniture has a premium, its not that expensive considering.

It looks like humidity and dust would be the down fall. or you could just leave your entire case open and have the same effect?

the matx version looks killer

Its not Micro ATX, its mini ITX, big differance in size and compatibility.

I agree with most everyone else, current price is to much, and designer furnitire is expensive because of the limited supply, cost of exotic materials, and expensive forming methods, as far as I know, none of these apply.

Anyone have any cooling numbers? I'd like to know if the components actually do run cooler with the open air design.

Watercooled and this case would be amazing and with virtually no noise. It might look like a pile of wires straight out of the engine of an X-Wing or Millennium Falcon though.

Everyone is so worries about dust. ... DUST DUST DUST! C'mon people. Spend a little money on THESE. Since I switched to them I've literally noticed my dust levels drop by 80% or more. Of course if you don't have central air you're screwed. LOL

I'm in for one of these cases.

HA! I just bought one of those yesterday.

meh, no edit button this morning

Yeah, Lian Li for me. Antec's stuff might be cheap (why I suspect they are so popular) but I've never been impressed with their case in terms of build quality. Lots of people love them though so I'm obviously in a minority.

I've always liked the idea of an open case but haven't seen one that would really be functional for me. The pictures on the website are lacking any real world detail. I'd like to see a bunch of pictures of it fully loaded to see what kind of flexiblility it has. How the hard drivers sit, how the DVD drives sit (and how the access to the trays are), where the PSU sits, access to motherboard plugs, etc. I can't make heads or tails of those pics. It says it has 2 5" bays. That's no good, I have 3 DVD burners.

I hope someone gets one and does an article on it to show the details.

OK, I read a bit more and saw the video. I liked what I saw. I saw that side option to clip in another hard drive holder. A good idea would be to have something similar to add more DVD drives. If it had that, I would buy it.

I was berated to no end on this forum back then when I showed some of my open aired computer builds.

I caught all kinds of flack about "RF-interference" and poop like that from people who didn't know any better but thought they did.

:D

And yes I was a member way before the boards lost my original registration.

Back then I had one mobo pinned to the wall and another on shelf with a two stage subzero alcohol liquid cooling setup pushing a BP6 OC'd from 500 mhz to 1000 mhz, dual core celeron baby.

I'm still trying to find a review on this thing with a fully assembled system running in it. I don't know how big a cpu heatsink will fit in it and no one has shown or talked about that yet.

Sorry the boards arent filled with elitists. I would have to say, after owning several Antecs' that:
A. Antecs arent really cheap, just less expensive then overly priced artwork cases.
B. I usually go by the "you get what you paid for" montra, but with most of the +$200 I just havent seen the reason other than its cool.
C. What is there to complain about in Antec quality? Some complained about the door on the P180 cases, I have shipped mine acrossed the world a few times and have still yet to break the door. I guess I am not rough with thousands of dollars of equipment in my case.

The reason why Antecs is popular is because they make good to great cases and they are Reasonable priced. I wouldnt say the same for the skeleton, but I figure the price is raised to make up for lack of projected sales.

I actually agree with both of these statements. I find that the majority of the time Antec produces mediocre products. Every so often, there's an Antec case that does it just right. Before the P18x, it was the door-style "performance tower" like this.

I'll never understand the infatuation with the 300/900/1200, but after I saw a P180 in person I purchased a P182SE. I also have a Lian-Li V2000B Plus II. I like both equally, but would not switch either's purpose. I prefer the P182SE for my gaming rig, and the V2000 for a file server. Build quality, fit and finish, and convienance are all about even between the two.

Microcenter has these in stock for those who are local and want a quick fix.

I just built a system around this case with the following:

Asus P6t
Core i7 920
Corsiar 3x2GB
Sapphire 4870 1GB
OCZ Gamestream 850W

Gotta say that while there are some definite areas for improvement, on the whole, the case is great and fits my requirements and goals perfectly. I've previously had a Lian Li.

I disagree that this case is overpriced. It is a niche product and everything on it is a one off compared to traditional tower cases. This requires a lot of specific manufacturing that cannot take advantage of the economies of scale of a traditional case.

What I wanted was an easy that allows easy access to tweak in, change up HD's, and great airflow for 4.0Ghz operation without trying to move a lot of air via multiple fans so I can have a silent system.

The only piece of the equation missing currently is a proper horizontally arranged heatsink with the 1366 retention mechanism. I'm awaiting for Scythe to release their i7 1366 clips for the Zipang which has the proper vertical fins to best take advantage of the overhead fan.

My setup now had incredible SILENT cooling. I literaly cannot hear my computer which i cannot quite say about my Lian Li that needed 5+ fans just to get enough airflow moving through it to keep my prior setup cool and stable.

I'll update later with some pics.
