Im upgrading come Christmas time, so I need to know whether I should get a second GeForce 8800GT or if I should get a single GTX 260? Opinions?

I play at 1680 x 1050 on an LG W2252TQ. My specs are as follows, and below that are the possible upgrade specs

Motherboard: ASUS M2N32 SLI Deluxe AM2

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 4200+ X2
(Upgrade) AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition

RAM: 2x1 GB G Skill DDR2-800 + 2x512 MB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
(Upgrade) 4x2 GB G Skill DDR2-800

Video Card: EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512 OC
(Upgrade) 8800GT SLI
or
MSI GTX 260 (192 Cores)
PSU: 500 Watt Sunbeam
(Upgrade) 650 Watt Thermalktake W0158RU

And parts left from upgrade will be sold, hence the new PSU.

I'd sell that 8800GT and get a 260 GTX. 8800GT is one of those cards that isn't really good in SLi.

GTX 260 ftw

With the CPU upgrade your system will be screaming fast!

GTX260 without a doubt.

In most situations a single card solution is going to be better than SLI. With SLI you're only looking at like a 20 - 30% boost over a single card in most situations, and there are still a lot of headaches with SLI.

With a single card like the GTX260 you just plug it in and go. The 260/280 offer incredible amounts of raw power and allow you to push the eye candy to higher levels than with the older G80/G92 based cards like the 8800/9800 series.

It's a no brainer. :)

Enjoy your new card whatever you decide to do!

As long as I get the money I need for my upgrade (asked everyone for a Newegg gift certificate) I can definitely do this upgrade. The GTX 260 and Phenom are a definite now. Thanks for the help everyone. The older parts will be sold for about $500 along with some other stuff, so this upgrades kick ass.

I'd sell that 8800GT and get a 260 GTX. 8800GT is one of those cards that isn't really good in SLi.

that is completely false.

though i can't recommend an 8800gt sli setup with the 2xx series out, 8800gt is enough for me to game very well at 1080p.

One more thing, will my power supply be sufficient for the MSI 260 OC? Its aSunbeam NUUO 550 Watt.

Probably not...

Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 36 Amp Amps.)

Your PSU is a 550 with 30A/35A(not quite sure why its got variable ratings) but if it does run as i think it may i dont think you're going to have enough Amps to run this card.

Evga GTX 260. They're cheap now. Manually OC it to 660-700 on the core. You'll love the card.

Yeah I figured the PSU would be garbage for this card. No worries, I'm upgrading anyway. Thanks all. Opinions can keep coming though, thats cool with me.

I feel you are always better off with a single gpu video card.Less things to worry about. If sli isn;t scaling good with a game then your upset about it and blah blah blah.

Better off to get a faster single card and call it a day.Now if you have money to blow and your trying to go super [H] then sli away big guy

8800GT SLI would be faster in a lot of games but slower in others

i agree, i had an evga 8800 gt superclocked, and i just updated to a evga gtx 260 (core 192) when i asked the same question about 8800 gt sli or 260 i got very mixed reviews. 8800 gt is cheaper for the same performance, but i think single cards are better. 2 overclocked 8800 gt's do better than a 280 in some tests, but worse in other tests.

Unless you can get the dual 8800's for really cheap, go with the GTX 260. Bear in mind that the 8800GT's will run out of texture memory in future games, because they only have 512mb.
