Costco: Panasonic TH-42PZ80U 42" 1080p Plasma $899

I saw a 50 inch version of this TV today and I was supremely tempted to buy one on the spot. I didn't buy it because I couldn't fit it into my car. When I got home I read additional reviews and saw videos on youtube showing the green ghost issue. I know it's intrinsic to plasma TVs, but since this TV will also see a lot of PS3 and 360 action, how bad is this problem on the Panny's?

You hardly see it.
I only ever see it with bright objects moving fast on a very dark background.
Its like a very short yellow/green trace that almost instantaneously disappears.
Even if you do notice, its easy to ignore.

Thanks for the input. After buying a Westinghouse a few years ago I'm going to be very careful about buying another TV.

120Hz LCDs were introduced because 24p, 30p and 60p all divide evenly into 120 (5:5 pull down, 4:4 and 2:2). With a 60Hz panel 24p need 3:2 pull down and some people notice a kind of skipping effect because some frames are repeated more than others (this is generally only noticeable on sweeping pans). The reason that no one ever really talks about 120Hz plasma is that most have much higher subfield drives (I believe the Panasonic in this thread has a 480Hz subfield drive) and can accept a variety of input signals and convert them into the proper output for the panel.

It states the following spec for the panny: 24p Playback (2:3)

Despite the "480Hz subfield drive", this is more akin to how a 60Hz LCD panel handles 24p content, no?

Yup, that's right. The higher end models have cinematic playback (48Hz), but all the review I've read said that it introduces flicker into some scenes.

This tv's picture quality will beat most LCDs. Simple as that. Go ahead and say it runs a little hotter and use more electricity then lcds but those aren't a factor for me. Picture quality is everything when watching tv and movies. This is a great price. I myself got this for around $750 after tax from CC and love it.
Got any info on this? It's a steal for that price!

+1. costco's return policy is nuts.

I also agree that in general, plasmas eat LCDs for breakfast, lunch and dinner when it comes to TV's. Its funny how many people dont realize this.

This is a good deal.

I dont like them as much, the glossy screens cause way too much glare and I still don't think they last as long as LCDs... They do have nicer colors from what I have sceen but I still take an LCD over a plasma just because of the glare issues.

But I am also one to like a nice matte finish on my notebook screen I can't stand those Glossy screens on Macs and HPs etc..

These models are not glossy screen. They have a new anti-glare finish. Also, Plasma life is greatly improved and rivals CRT nowadays.

...An even better deal...

J&R has it for $799!!!!!

I'm so tempted. I read a post in here on page two saying something along the lines of being afraid to buy it do to the current economy/resession. Well, we need people who can buy stuff to go buy stuff in order to get this market going again. Everyone sitting on their thumbs isn't helping the situation. If you are working, and can make a purchase, please do so. I'm going to either get this or stick to my original plan and get a projector.

SPEND SPEND SPEND! haha :D

Shipping kills the J&R deal, it's up to $915, the best one so far has been Vanns with the Bluray player but I didn't have the funds until today. I still would like to know how Pete949 was able to get it at CC for $749

OKAY, I just bought a 46PZ85U. The 42 just wasn't enough. Are you happy now?

EDIT: Didn't have it in stock so I bought a Samsung LN46A650. I contributed even more to the economy.

:D :D :D
