Beejive is out at the app store. Yes, its $15.99 but i think its worth it. Stay connected even when you close the app. Can send email/sms notification when you have a msg while app is closed.

I was about to get this for my iPod Touch, then realized it would be a much better investment once I get an iPhone... i'm patiently waiting for a loophole out of my Verizon contract :)

Hmm, even if I had 2.0 software, I would not pay $16 for an app for my iPod. I don't pay $16 for apps for my computer!

16$?

umm, no, BeeJive was awesome online and *free* might I add... but 16$?

Suck it BeeJive.

the FREE beejive is web based. no push notification. cant stay connected when apps is closed. i am not trying to sell beejive. the #1 thing i hate about my iphone 3g is i cant find a decent IM app. I am very happy with beejive, its working perfectly. Emoticons is coming soon via update. $16 bucks is really nothing consider that i can probably carry this app over next year to the new iphone. i would gladly pay $20-$30 for such a well written app.

I've already got two FREE IM apps that do just fine...

and once Apple allows push notifications, then i'll be set.

I'm with everyone else waiting for the push notification. But how soon will we see it?

Yeah $16 seems a bit to much for a product like this. Checked it out and doesn't seem worth it.

To each his own.

Once Apple gets push notification done and AIM and every other IM client out there incorporates it, this will be useless.

puch notification is back in the latest firmware seeds from what i've been reading

That is excellent, I wonder why they pulled it from 2.1, but just glad it will be here soon. Are there any good all in one (MSN/AIM/Yahoo/etc.) apps on the phone yet? I found one but I had to register on their website, so I held back on getting it.

I use Palringo, which has been great.

there's also IM+ which is free

I used JiveTalk (beejive) on my Blackberry and it's an excellent app. I paid $30 for a user license at the time so I guess $16 isn't out-of-line. There were free or cheaper alternatives at the time for the Blackberry as well but beejive was tons better, it made it worth purchasing.

Be weary of Palringo.. A lot of people are saying they've been getting tons of spam when signing up. I'm always leery about having to give my account info/password to a 3rd party product.

Been using it for a while now (first on WinMo) and haven't noticed any increase in spam.
(and I used a regular e-mail account)

I just created an account and used one of my spam email address, not really that worried but just went safe.

Cydia recently added a program that allows you to run applications in the background as you please.

Works perfectly with AIM and I haven't noticed any performance decrease whatsoever.

Which app is that?

IM+ seems to have added a landscape keyboard, I say 'seems' because whenever I've seen IM+ mentioned no one's ever commented on this... It seems huge to me, it's one of the highly touted features of Beejive and none of the other free IM apps have a landscape keyboard so far. None of Palringo's other fluff features (URL links, picture/emoticon sending) are as useful as the landscape keyboard, that and Palringo seems sluggish and more cluttered than IM+, but that's just me.

It seems to take a while to change your status too, I guess because of the dependence on their servers as that extra link to keep you online for a few min when you close the program (kinda pointless w/o push notifications, 'specially if you use MSN anyway which has offline messaging).

That's clearly always an option, I haven't felt the need to do so yet (I've only got an iPod touch tho)... But I might end up jailbreaking it for something even less significant but rather annoying, the fact that you can't independently control the screen dimming from the auto-lock... Which is a pain in the car if I want the screen to dim so I don't waste battery while playing music, can't do it w/o locking, so I can't skip tracks easily w/o a $30 adapter/charger.

Y'know what would make even more sense, if Apple simply developed their own multi-IM client and made one exception on background-running apps just for that one lightweight program which they could retain full control over... They'd save themselves from the push notification rigmarole they've been embroiled in and it'd be simpler for everyone.

I don't get it the iPhone must be the only phone out there (even counting freebies) that comes with no integrated IM app at all. Or is it coming with AIM outta the box? Either way, it's a stupid design choice. I guess they might've done it to avoid another situation though, because depending on their AT&T agreement, whatever they did bundle might've run up people's text message counter.

It seems a lot of phones out there (even the G1) have service-provider coded IM apps which just count the IMs towards your text message plan rather than your data plan, even if you're paying for unlimited data... Though the G1 doesn't do it for Gchat, still silly though.

That's kind of different though... Personally I wouldn't pay $16 for an IM app either. I've never paid for one on my desktop (Pidgin ftw), why would I pay for one on a phone or MP3 player which I'll use even less.

Just installed IM+ on this iPod touch I got a few days ago, turned it and wham, landscape keyboard. Simply out-fucking-standing and for the first time I've used the landscape keyboard, I sent 3 IMs to friends and only made one typo, easily fixed. Damned impressive stuff, truly. And I have very large hands too... it works great, and the $80 I paid for this thing just makes it even more valuable. ;)

Yeah, heh, I wonder if everyone who's reviewed or commented on IM+ before simply didn't turn the iPhone/touch and didn't realize it had landscape keyboard... I was tempted to jailbreak it or buy the one app that adds a landscape keyboard for e-mail (though it's kind of a kludge, you type, save the text then re-open it on the e-mail or something), but since I IM more than I e-mail IM+'s got me covered for now.

I just wish Apple would simply build the landscape keyboard into everything else, it makes typing on the touch screen so much more comfortable... Personally, I still can't type with two hands on the regular keyboard.
