Your Fallout 3 Impressions

Freaking awesome. The beginning was a bit long but worth it. I got it at the midnight release and played about 3 hours and I am no where NEAR close to scratching the main or side quests. I love VATS actually, especially the ability to hit multiple times or multiple enemies depending on AP points. Time to start it up again :)

Me too :(
Just found that out, when browsing the site of the store I intend to buy it from...damn it

Where are you? I'm using Play. They claim the 31st, but whenever I've pre-ordered with them the game's arrived a few days early, since their normal delivery takes 3-5 days they try and offset it so it arrives on the day of release, but since it's not an exact science i full y expect mine to be here friday at the latest, or thursday/tomorrow if I'm super-lucky.

for those who really care, you can go on bestbuy.com order the game and just show up and get it.

also shows you if they have it in stock..

Can't freaking wait to get my copy. At what resolution are you running? My rig is close to yours and I'd like to run at 2560x1600 all ultra high. Think that's doable?

It's disheartening to hear X-fire is not working yet, but how did you come to this conclusion (temps...?) I was really hoping ATI would have patched the game for use of X-fire (and X-fire X in my case).

To answer your question, i'm running the game at 1680 X 1050, due to monitor restrictions. AA at 4x and anistropic 16X. I think you can run at 2560 X 1600 assuming Xfire is utilizing both cards. However, upon playing the game and checking my temps at 60 % speed, the card was at about 47 degrees. It runs well, with a dip every now and then, but it's nothing too serious to fret about. I'm sure they can make some optimizations between now and a few weeks. At my res., I think that the cpu might be working more than I want. I think i'll get a native 1900 X 1200 monitor today from best buy. I'll report my findings later on in the evening.

I'm downloading now off of Steam...20%...can't wait til it's finished so I can play...

Portugal and I am trying to get it where I usually get my games: FNAC, a big store around here. I really don't expect the game to be available before Friday though :(

personally i'd go with the 360 just because its on the 42".. but if you want best graphics and best gameplay the PC is pretty much a no-brainer.

you need to just drag your 42" over to the PC and then the problem is solved :)
I went on my lunch hour and Circuit City made the choice for me by not having the pc version on hand.....now this thing will burn a hole in my briefcase while waiting for me to get off work.:D

Futureshop in Canada shows not in stock on their website but I don't know if that just means they have no stock for web orders or if they have none in stock in the store too. I wan to go get it in about an hour from now but don't want to have to be driving all over town looking for a copy. This happened to me when Oblivion came out. Only store that had it was EB games on release day and all of their copies were already pre-sold. Why does EB only get like ten copies per store on release day for a game that is predicted to sell far more?

there's no love for PC's where i live :(

There's no love for PCs anywhere. PC is treated like the black sheep of gaming by retailers and online websites that review multiple platforms. It pisses me off too. PC section at EB gets smaller and more cramped every year. WTF does EB have such small stores when they are selling games for multiple platforms anyway? Morons.

It's called profit. Why stock a ton of games for a platform not many people buy for, relative to the amount of people buying for the other platforms.

Out here in Phoenix, it is called thank god for fry's..

And not having ot put up with crap like the gamestops and needing to pre-order games.

I wish we had Fry's in Missouri...:( A visit to Fry's is a must whenever we visit my college buddy in Dallas. I always walk out with something.

Planning on picking up my pre-order @ BB after this midterm i have in an hour ;)
Quick question for those of you who've gotten past the initial tutorials and whatnot: Does Fallout3 have grouped NPCs as part of its gameplay? (ie: Sulik, Cassidy, Vic, Marcus in F2)

Um, because gaming is about more than just profit? Would you like a music store that only sold the top selling albums and nothing else? Oh, right, the big retailers do that too. That explains why I don't buy cd's anymore and download mp3's instead.

You guys are killing me! My copy doesn't come until Thursday, or so amazon says. (I had to have the collectors edition)

Can we hear about the game and not about problems with acquiring the game?

How's the gameplay? What does the world feel like when you leave the Vault? Any amusing stories?

I was told last night at midnight that walmart had it but the palit with the game hadn't been brought out. I waited 20 minutes for it and found out that they only had the PS3 and 360 versions. What a waste of time!

Seriously. My thread has been hijacked...

Loving every minute of it, I thought that I would get tired of VATS but I don't..... actually its very, very useful in terms of saving ammo and strategy and the death scenes kick ass!(example).... I was at the elementary school and shot a raider standing on a ledge across the way from me in the leg , scoring a critical hit, he lost his balance from the wound and slipped and fell off the ledge to his death. It made me laugh, and a little surprised.:p

. The enviroment is amazing, looks like they upped the textures big time, especially on the faces and skin, lots and lots of detail!. I am happy to report there are a lot of dialog options (more so than Oblivion). I haven't started on the main quest yet and the only things I have explored so far is springvale , the elementary school, the super duper mart and Megaton, I am really impressed so far guys, I knew Bethesda wouldn't let the "old" fans of the series down. If I could give it a rating I would happily give it a 8.5 rating right now, just from what I have played in 6 hours.

Also , IMO the whole "Oblivion with guns" thing can be thrown out the window, it doesn't feel or play like Oblivion at all.

One final note though, I do like the Music in it, but I am happy to report that the file structure has stayed the same from oblivion , so you can import Fallout 1 and 2 music into Fallout 3, I replaced the Megaton Music with Reddings from Fallout 2 and it fits it perfectly:D.

Well back to the Wastes , more to come I'm sure.;)

Excellent, I see my faith in this title has not been misplaced.

Now, sooner or later I have to go get it.

I'm still in the Vault but it just 'feels' like a Fallout game so far. I can't wait to get out into the wastelands and start punching people in the face with a powerfist!

Glad to hear the file structure is the same and we can just drop Mp3s into the folder...

Although I'm a bit wierd, I replaced all my Oblivion music with synth, jazz, ambient music for exploring...and some 80s rock for fighting scenes.

has anyone tried the game with a x1600 (the macbook pro (core duo)) verison of the card or similiar and could tell me about the performance on low/medium (whatever runs IF it runs) settings?

I got mass effect and that seems to run with occasional lags when i go to the map (that started only recently) and i was wondering how fallout 3 would deal.

Thanks
,Kamron

One thing I've noticed from the past couple of Elderscroll titles is that the PC/NPCs always run around like they have a pole shoved up their ass. Did they finally get an animator that knows what he's doing for FO3? :D

Unfortunately, I heard the animations aren't much better.
They really need to fire their whole animation department at Bethesda. Always been terrible.

Dammit.. seriously. They've been using the same damn animator(/s) I bet.. Makes these beautiful high production valued games look indie ish.

I've never wanted a game so badly! And because of that I've never been so depressed. I simply can't afford to buy the game right now! I have a TON of bills coming up, and with my fiancee not having a job right now, the burden of all our bills land on me right now! With a few birthdays, and than our first christmas as husband and wife (getting married this weekend), coming up, I just can't afford it!

It's killing me! Anyone want to donate a few bucks to get me the game?!? ;)

I'm so jealous of you guys :p

I'm kinda wishing I made my Female Black Widow Ninja a melee weapons character instead of unarmed(going for paralyzing palm at 18). Its fun when I do manage to sneak up on a guy and deck him hard in the back of the head though.

And the rad roach unarmed sneak animation is totally what I'd do IRL if I could actually get up the courage to come within 50 feet of one. :D

Out of curiosity, what sort of performance at what res are you getting out of your rig for F3?

Trying to decide between PC and 360 and your machine is pretty directly comparable to mine. PC seems to look a lot better but I'll go for the "couch version" if I'll just have to turn the detail down anyway.

Can we please get some screenshots of this game up and running. I'm stuck at work with my copy on my desk.

Jeff

I went with the 360 version (mostly because I can lay on my couch and play) and to be honest, it looks great nevertheless. I plan on getting the PC version once the mods actually come out.

Screenshots... in motion...

What I mean is seeing the game up and running, not the canned shots that I've been looking at for the past year. I watched IGN's video review, and I want to see this game on some high end hardware, which is the norm here at [H]ard OCP.

Jeff

They need to hire a new animation artists...the same shitty animations that were in oblivion are in this game. It's 2008 why isn't there a separate animation for ALL movement directions, and why is it so clunky.

I'm enjoying it so far, stepped out of the vault and I felt like I really had a place to explore.

Got the last CE at the local Gamestop too :)

btw, I just found out how gory the game can be, w o w.

I left the vault, got to megaton, and ran some errands for the people in town. Don't wanna spoil anything, but fuck those flaming ants. I was chugging soda and eating ant meat constantly because they were kicking my ass :p

Shooting without using VATS seems kinda wonky, but its not bad.

Its definately worth buying for me. I rented it from blockbuster using that month long rental deal they do. Once I get paid I'll be buying it for sure.

Dude, don't even go there. If he wants to then let him. He did'nt ask if he should pirate it.

EDIT: Deleted quote from post that was advocating piracy -zoo

I went to 7-eleven to get some cigarettes and to my surprise, they have fallout 3 at the front counter (a photocopy printout listed for 3 platforms). I almost got one but feel kinda weird buying a game from 7-eleven as if I was buying a porn magazine.
