When putting in my Q6600 processor, I was not very careful and got a decent amount of finger marks on my processor. How much should I expect this to actually affect my CPU temperature?

Always clean the CPU with rubbing alcohol first before putting on thermal paste. That said, I doubt a finger print would make a measurable effect on temperature.

maybe 1 or 2 c. no more. maybe nothing. its not a huge deal, but next time u have the hsf off for any reason use the isopropyl!

Yes finger prints pose a massive heating issue, so here is my recommendation.

Pull your HSF off and get down there and lick the processor a few times. You saliva contains digestive enzymes that we eat those finger prints away.

Ah good advice

Don't scare the noobs:p

While cleaning any fingerprints off the cpu heat spreader is a good thing, I would be surprised if having it FULL of fingerprints would actually make even a 1c difference once the thermal interface material is heated up and spread out.

Don't worry about it, it won't hurt anything. Having the thermal paste on there correctly is the biggest factor by far.

it wouldnt make any difference tempwise. Just the fact that the CPU wasnt clean would bother me.

thats strange.. didn't get any finger prints on mine... if cleaning doesn't work, just lap the cpu :D
adds a shine to the surface of your cpu :p
